D.T2.2.1 Value chain generating
algorithm - Methodology
VCG Methodology

VCG Methodology
3
Step 1 – Cluster Mapping [Done]
4
Mapped Actors
Describe cluster activity in form of NACE codes mapped to pre-
defined value chains.
Step 2 – Actor Listing [In Progress]
5
Select a relevant number of actors and describe them in more detail,
including address, website, and NACE codes.
Known Actors
Step 2 – Actor Listing [In Progress]
6
Select multiple NACE codes to describe different activities.
Step 3 – Actor Description [In Progress]
7
Select a few important actors and describe their activities in more
detail using descriptors (input, process, output).
Existing VCs
Step 3 – Actor Description [In Progress]
8
It is recommended to mention NACE codes if possible.
Step 4 – Idea Description [In Progress]
9
For the selected actors, think about potential new value chains and
formulate them by means of descriptors (input, process, output).
New VCs
Step 5 – Match Making [New]
10
For a potential new value chain, select two actors who may
implement it and use the VCG to find more potential links.
Links
Step 5 – Match Making [New]
11
Exponential Growth
12
Even if only a few viable alternatives per actor can be identified by the
VCG in the knowledge base, an exponential number of potential new
value chains are generated.
This is a good reason to continuously grow our knowledge base,
adding similar actors on purpose.
Tasks for Project Partners
13
Next Steps
14
By [insert-reasonable-deadline-here], the project partners are
asked to grow the knowledge base as follows.
200 Known Actors with NACE codes
15
50 Existing VCs
16
20 New VCs

5 Links

Future Development
19
Planned Improvements
20
Until the end of December 2019, we aim to:
Fix bugs when alerted by email
Implement improvements based on your suggestions (e.g. sort
function for name, category, and region).
Introduce auto completion for the «Actor value chains», which
should help to standardize the text used for inputs, processes,
and outputs.
Update the «Search similar actors» functionality to new versions.
The next one can be expected in about two weeks.
Search Similar Actors – Version 2
21
better overview of links
include subcategories
select precision of NACE codes
better overview and handling of good/bad alternatives
prioritize actors with descriptors
Planned New Interface
22
By the end of January 2020, we aim to introduce a new interface,
which allows to explore actor connections via inputs and outputs,
following suggestions from BIOPRO.
Within the VCG methodology, it serves to find ideas (Step 4 – Idea
description) and to create links (Step 5 – Match making).
Long-Term Goals
23
Two promising lines of investigation for the future:
Automatic augmentation and update of the knowledge base by
means of external databases or web crawling.
Machine learning applied to an augmented knowledge base, in
order to improve the link suggestions of the VCG.
Exit Strategy
24
Value Generation
25
The collaborative platform allows to transfer ideas across clusters.
This is an incentive to join and contribute to the platform.
