What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Page 2: Presentation12

The production company is responsible for the fundraising of the film. It handles the budget, marketing, organization of staff and the product itself. Here are some examples:

Mainstream production company: (example) Lucas Films

Independent production company: (example)Lions gate

As our film was a low budget one, it will be suitable for us to pick an independent production company that will help support our making.

A mainstream production company usually supports films that have a high budget, in this case, our film will not be distributed by mainstream.

The production company that we chose is: February Films, due to the fact that they are a smaller independent company which supports films with low budgets. If we were supported by a big production company, then the director would have years of film making experience and we are students therefore it is best suited that we are supported by an unknown production company.

There are three types of film industries, these are:

• Hollywood• British• Local The type of film industry that we have used is Local. This is because we are a low budget company, distributed by a low budget distributor/production company.

We are distributed by: Jaman The distribution company is responsible for the marketing side of the production, including advertising and setting release dates in cinemas. We chose Jaman Distribution because they will be able to offer a local cinematic release, a 250 DVD release and an online release on VIMEO. This will be an incredible achievement for us as our goal is to reach our local audience with our product.

A much bigger distribution (E.g. Sony, Disney and Paramount) will promise a big budget which includes big stars and global releases. We are a low budget side so we cannot be distributed by Hollywood/British industries. Many high budget films have original storylines, in which our film does not fill in this category as we used a lot of intertextuality in our making. As a result, we cannot promise that we will create massive profits due to this, therefore a big distribution company would likely not be interested.

Conglomerate?

• Our film will not be accessed to press and publicity networks because we are not owned by a conglomerate. A conglomerate are well known company and is one of the big six production companies which include Disney, Universal, Fox searchlight , Paramount, Sony and TimeWarner. We are not owned by a conglomerate due to our low budget making and non-mainstream product.

How will our product be distributed?

• Since our product is a low budget, we have to rely on the internet to fulfil our audience potential. One is YouTube, in which allows members to upload videos so everyone can access it worldwide. During the course of 3 weeks after our product was uploaded on YouTube, it gained 327 views in which is successful in my eyes. My expectation was to get 100 views and this is beyond that.

Reasons for choosing YouTube• The reason why choosing YouTube is a good idea is because during my

research on student thriller openings, I have found out that some have been successful in achieving wider audience by distributing their making on YouTube. They have achieved over 2000 views and was distributed independently, Here is an example:

Social networking sites

Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr will help our product in distributing and collecting our target audience.

Facebook has over one billion users per month in which is suitable for the advertisement and distribution of our product. Twitter and Tumblr also has similar statistics.
