Purpose

Since Awards reflect the scope and quality of our Top Ladies and Top Teens programming, we have tried, wherever possible in these guidelines, to reinforce the current TLOD/TTA National Programs and Projects outlined in the TLOD National Program Resource Guide. Provide consistency and structure of the Awards program across all six geographical areas.

Present Awards that will be evaluated at the National Syn-Lod, as referenced in the TLOD Governance.

Review of Criteria, Guidelines and Eligibility for clarity.

How the Awards Committee prepare to receive your scrapbooks leading up to the day the Awards are presented.

Receive any additional guidance from National Awards Chair.

What You Need To Know

The National Awards will be evaluated for Syn-Lod 2013 under the direction of the National Awards Committee.

Chapter and Individual entries must have been judged as First Place Winners at the AREA level

The Teen entries are eligible for National competition for the Syn-Lod year ONLY.

The topics for the National Essay Contest and the National Speakers Tournament must be used by the teen who plan to enter the national competition.

The Chapter and Individual entries submitted for the Syn-Lod National Awards Program may carry a different name at the Area Level, however they must adhere to the National Awards Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria for eligibility at the National level.

The First Place Winners from the Area level must be reported on the Area Director’s Report and submitted by May 10th of the Syn-lod year.

NOTE: Any First Place ties at the Area Level must be broken at the Area Level to determine the single entry First Place Winner that advances to National.

Special Notes for Evaluation of Top Teens Entries

• Top Teen entries are eligible for National competition for the Syn-Lod year ONLY.

• If an Area’s First Place Winner of the TTA Speakers Tournament will not be able to attend Syn-lod, then the Area Director may approve alternate entry of the Second Place Winner or Third Place Winner, in this order, if either will be attending Syn-Lod. The information on the alternate entry for the Syn-Lod National Speakers Tournament must also be identified on the Area Director’s Report to be submitted by May 10th of the Syn-Lod year.

• In a non-Syn-Lod year, Area Conferences may still hold Essay Contests and Speakers Tournaments. Since these winners do not advance to Syn-Lod, topics may be selected from the National Essay and Speaker Tournament Topics or be determined by the Area Director or Area Awards Chair. (This is only during a NON- Syn-lod year ONLY.

• During a Syn-Lod Year, topics for the TTA Essay and for the TTA Speakers Tournament entries must have been selected from the “National Topics for TTA Essay & Speakers Tournament” for the Program Year 2011-2013 and must have been the winning Essay/Speech from the Area competition for 2012-2013.

• Must have been the First Place Winner from the Area Conference for 2012-2013

• Must contain materials for the Two-Year period of July 2011- June 2013 in (1) scrapbook.

• The winning scrapbook from the Area level may need to be revised to ensure that material included for entry to the National Awards Program is inclusive for the specified period between Syn-Lods.

• The TLOD Chapter Scrapbook must not be larger than 16 X 20 inches.

• The TLOD Chapter Scrapbook must not weigh more than 30 pounds.

• The TLOD Chapter Scrapbook cover must display the Chapter name and the Two-Year Program Period.

• Chapters chartered or reactivated in 2012 thru 2013 are not eligible for the Syn-Lod 2013 TLOD Chapter Program of Work Award.

The LaVerne Madlock Award – Top Lady of the Year Award

• The Top Lady of the Year Award must have been the First Place Winner from the Area Conferences.

• (2) entries may be submitted from the Area level. The First place winner from 2011-2012 and the first place winner from 2012-2013 are both eligible.

• Eligible entrants for Top Lady of the Year must have been a member for at least 5 years.

• Each Top Lady of the Year Scrapbook must cover the most recent 5-year period in one book.

• Each Top Lady of the Year Scrapbook must not be larger than 13 X 15 inches and must not weigh more than 10 pounds.

• Each Top Lady of the Year Scrapbook must include a letter of endorsement from the Chapter.

• The Scrapbook Cover must display the entrant’s name and the applicable Program Year.

• Refer to the National Awards Program Criteria and Eligibility Guidelines for allocation of number of points per area or section

• Must span the Two-Year Program Period of July 2011 – June 2013 in (1) portfolio

• Must contain publicly published newsprint and or magazine articles only that feature TLOD/TTA

• Publicly published newsprint must include newspaper, magazine or journal identification and date.

• Originals, copies of originals or online prints of the publicly published articles are acceptable.

• Only photos within the published article are acceptable.

• NO chapter-produced/computer-generated documents or solo photos are acceptable.

• The portfolio must not be larger than 16 X 20 inches and must not weigh more than 30 pounds.

• Chapter newsletters, programs and flyers are not considered for this Award.

• The portfolio must display the Area number and the Two-Year Program Period.

The winning Top Teen entries from the Area level that are submitted for the National Awards Program must meet the National Eligibility Guidelines to be accepted and should have used the same Evaluation Criteria as the National Awards Criteria.

First Place Winner from the Area Level for Program Year Two of the Two-Year Program Period is Eligible to compete.

Scrapbook material must cover the Program Year of Syn-Lod.

Scrapbook must not be larger than 16 X 20 inches.

Scrapbook must not weigh more than 30 pounds.

Scrapbook cover must display Chapter name and the applicable Program Year.

Scrapbook must contain a Table of Contents

All Pages within the Scrapbook must be numbered.

Scrapbook must be constructed in a fashion that allows pages to lay flat when turned and must be bound so there are no loose pages.

The National TTA Director’s Outstanding Top Teen of America Award – Top Teen Portfolio and Application Form

Application for the National TTA Director’s Outstanding Top Teen of America Award must be completed and obtain all signatures for entry.

Eligible entrant must be an active Top Teen for at least (2) years in a Chapter that is in good standing at the Area and National levels.

Must be First Place Winner from the Area level for Program Year Two of the Two-Year Program Period.

Portfolio must contain an Introduction Sheet which includes the entrant’s Name, Chapter, Area, City & State and an application form completed.

Portfolio material must document entrant’s involvement in TTA and community activities up to a four-year time period.

Portfolio must contain no more than 20 numbered pages size 8 ½ X11 must not be larger than 13 X 15 inches and must not weigh more than 10 pounds.

Portfolio Cover must display entrant’s name and the applicable Program Year.

Portfolio must contain a Table of Contents and all pages within the Portfolio must be numbered. All pages must lay flat when turned with no loose pages.

The Augusta Cash Latham TTA Essay Award – Teen Essay

• Top Teen entries are eligible for National competition for the Syn-Lod Year only.• Eligible entrant must be an active Top Teen for at least (1) year in a Chapter that is

in good standing at the Area and National levels.• First Place Winner from the Area level for Program Year Two (2012-2013) of the

Two-Year Program Period is eligible.• Topic must be selected from the “National Topics for TTA Essay & Speakers

Tournament” for the Program Year found on page 15 of the National Guidelines.• The Essay must be 600 to 1000 words on the selected topic.• Essay must be typewritten and on 8 ½ X 11 size paper.• Triple space between the title and the first line of text.• Essay must be double-spaced and use a five-space paragraph indentation.• There should be a one inch margin at the top and bottom of each page.• Provide a bibliography to document research sources.

The Ruth Payne Smith TTA Speakers Tournament Award – TEEN SPEECH

• Eligible entrant must be an active Top Teen for at least (1) year in a Chapter that is in good standing at the Area and National levels.

• First Place Winner from the Area level for Program Year Two of the Two-Year Period. If the First Place Winner is not able to attend Syn-Lod, the Area Director may authorize the Second or Third Place Winner to be an alternate nominee for the National Tournament.

• Upon arrival at the site of the competition, each speaker must sign in by providing his/her name, chapter and title of speech.

• Each speaker is required to bring two copies of his/her speech to Syn-Lod.• The manuscript must be titled with the entrant’s name, Chapter, Area, and

City/State.• SPEAKERS MUST DELIVER FROM MEMORY, the oration to a panel of judges.

SPEECHES MAY NOT BE READ.• Each Speaker will be allowed three (3) to (5) minutes. Longer or shorter speeches

will be penalized.• Speakers will be judged on the basis of content/composition and

presentation/delivery.

August 15, 2012 Area Awards Chair to send local chapter a sample request letter to solicit individuals to serve as judges.

August 21, 2012 Area Awards Chair mail out and or email Awards packet with all pertinent information to include dates for forms to be returned.

September 12, 2012 Local Chapter to provide contact names, addresses andphone numbers of individuals to serve as judges.

September 24, 2012 Secure recommendations for local judges.

September 27, 2012 Finalize judges schedules and related materials, ie. tallysheets, copies, measuring tape, etc. Compile intent

forms.

October 11, 2012 Finalize assignments for Awards Committee Members and contact members via letter and email with specifics.
