Just as the visible tip of an iceberg hides a far greater

mass of ice underneath the ocean surface, so doesHemingways dialogue belie the unstated tension

between his characters.

Jig, is symbolic because jig is another word for a

whiskey measurer, which is a tool. It's symbolic becausethe American male thinks of her as more of a tool than a

person with feelings and values.
