EQAO Award(OSSLT)South Carleton High School was one of 17 schools

from across the province awarded the prestigious Dr.

Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement

Award from the EQAO.

The award was being presented to schools that have

demonstrated growth in helping students with

Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) meet provincial

literacy standards. Support for exceptional learners

has resulted in four consecutive years of increased

success rates on the OSSLT at South Carleton. The

award emphasizes equity and inclusion and aligns

with the theme of the EQAO Forum, “Data, Equity and

a Culture of Hope.”

Supports for Students• In additional to daily access to three guidance

counsellors, special education teachers, and student success teachers, students have access to psychologists, social worker, child and youth worker, Rideauwood Counsellor, School Resource Officer, and many more professionals, as needed.

• Student run groups such as Link Crew and Sources of Strength provide peer to peer supports.

• A focus on health and wellbeing through courses, facilities, and programs (e.g. Breakfast Club)

Link Crew is a high school transition program that welcomes grade 9’s and makes them feel comfortable

throughout the first year of their high school experience

As positive role models, Link Leaders are motivators and leaders who guide the Grade 9’s to discover what it takes to be successful

during the transition to high school

Size, location, and facilities● Size of just over 1100 students is big enough

for support to all programs, small enough to know the students and their learning needs

● Most students get daily ride on a “Big Yellow Limo” - the safest way to travel to school!

● Advantage of older facility is size of learning spaces, in particular the specialty learning spaces such as shops, art, drama, foods, fitness facilities - spaces like these are not seen in newer schools and will never be built to this scale again

Tourism (HEAT)

• Focusing their studies on a specific career sector for the purpose of self exploration

D.E.L.F.• The D.E.L.F. is the Diplôme d’Études en Langue

Française

• Globally recognized program to assess French language

• Significant advantage for students looking for part-time, summer or permanent work that requires French Language proficiency

International Certificate Program

• The International Certificate Program (I.C.P.) creates more globally aware student citizens and links students with potential travel opportunities

• I.C.P. is another opportunity for students to demonstrate self-selected enrichment to post-secondary and employers

• Participants earn the certificate by: studying an international language; taking internationally-focused classes; understanding global issues; participating in an internationally focused project of their choice

Advanced Placement• Program offered in English,

Chemistry and French

• Students complete the exam in early May

• Students may earn a University credit or the opportunity to move onto a second year course

• 110 “Instructional Hours” in specific subject– Often divided into 75 minute periods

• Requires a final mark of 50% +

• Students usually take 4 credits at a time

12 ELECTIVE Credits• Elective credits allow students to build an

educational program that suits their individual interests and pathway

• It is important to note that courses such as senior science, math, social studies do count as electives - all the more reason why additional elective courses in OCDSB is such a big advantage over Catholic System

The Literacy Test• Administered the spring of the grade 10 year

• A test based on language and communication (reading and writing) expectations of curricula up to and including grade 9

• Accommodations may be provided for some students with unique learning needs

Community Involvement• A diploma requirement!

• Encourages civic responsibility, promotes community values and reinforces importance of volunteerism

• Complete 40 hours before graduation

• Parents and students will select courses in collaboration with intermediate teachers, guidance

counsellors and administrators

• Grade 8 students and their parents choose grade 9 courses on the basis of the student’s needs, interests, strengths, and past achievements
