Definitions• Traditional definition:

a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.

• My understanding:Genre is another name for category. It seperates similar content from other content. Makes it easy for content search and also bring uniformity in it.

Rocka form of popular music which evolved from rock and roll and pop music during the mid and late 1960s. Harsher and often self-consciously more serious than its predecessors, it was initially characterized by musical experimentation and drug-related or anti-establishment.• Examples include popular songs such as, Smells Like teen spirit and Bohemian Rapsody

Pop• is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in

the Western world during the 1950s and 1960s as a softer alternative to rock and roll. The terms "popular music" and "pop music" are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular (and can include any style).• Examples include: We dont talk anymore; Love yourself and

Blank Space.

Folk music• Folk music includes both traditional music and the genre that

evolved from it during the 20th century folk revival. The term originated in the 19th century but is often applied to music that is older than that. Some types of folk musicare also called world music.• Popular artists include Abida Parveen and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Hip Hop Music• also called rap music, is a music genre formed in the USA in the

1970s that consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements:MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling and beatboxing.• Famous artists include Drake, Eminem, Usher, Tupac, 50 cent.

Electronic Music• This is by far the latest genre of music. It has gained popularity just recently.

There are usually no vocals involved except for beat boxing. Rest of the the sounds are sampled on the system with dedicated softwares. The music is merely computer generated. It is the the most popular form of music right after Hip hop.
