Myths of organ donation
• My family will be charged if I donate my organs. • Famous people move to the front of the line
when they need a donor organ. • I want my loved one to have an open-casket
funeral. That can't happen if his or her organs or tissues have been donated.
• Organ donation is against my religion. • If I am a donor, my doctor or the emergency
room staff won't work as hard to save my life

Who receives the Organs? The United Network for Organ Sharing maintains a
waiting list for vital organs that will determine who will receive a transplant.
Criteria:• age • medical urgency • the distance between the donor and the recipient • the size of the donor organ in relation to the size
of the recipient• the type of organ needed

When does donation occur?
•ONLY after every measure has been taken to save a patient’s life.
•After death has been legally and medically declared
•After a person has passed away, the hospital notifies an organ recovery center.
