How to advocate?…the use of a declaration…

Floor LieshoutDirector| YOURS – Youth for Road Safety

2

“Advocacy means actively supporting something or someone (an idea, action, or person) and attempting to persuade others of the importance of that cause. Advocacy is often a group effort focused on changing particular public policies”

3

• For example you advocate for…Better legislation on drink-drivingLower speed limits around schoolsMore youth involvementetc.

• A declaration is a tool, never a goal on itself

4

• A declaration is helpful to align a group and to focus on three or four shared points

• A declaration can give you a great entry at all levels

• A declaration is as good as the implementation of it:o Many resolutions and declarations are written and barely used again after adoption

1. It is clear, to the point and advocates for 3 or 4 key points;

2. The distribution is well thought of;3. It is translated in as many languages as

possible when it is an international doc;4. There is a follow-up to check if people did

what they said they would do…

15

1. Use the media (friendly journalist?);2. Meet with Politicians;3. Write letters to key-stakeholders;4. Talk with your friends-peers and urge them

to endorse and help;5. Talk with other NGOs to help spread the

word.
