George Orwell
George Orwell was born Eric
Arthur Blair. The son of a civil
servant, he was born in India in
1903.
George Orwell is most famous for
his books Animal Farm (published
in 1945) and 1984 (published in1949). He died in London, England
in January of 1950.

Purpose of writing the book
Through the Animal Farm, George Orwell want toshowed how the Russian rulers were selfish and cruel.
George Orwell once said, Animal Farm was the firstbook in which I tried, with full consciousness of what I
was doing, to fuse political purpose and artistic purposeinto one whole.
George Orwell was able to speak out against RussianCommunism, encourage the lower classes of people,and share some of his beliefs.
Orwell was a firm believer that communism could notwork and wrote animal farm to convince his readers ofthis fact.
He was a democratic socialist and has written theAnimalFarm to criticize the Stalin era.

SUMMARY
The story takes place on a farm somewhere inEngland. It is told by an all-knowing narrator in thirdperson. The action begins when the oldest pig on thefarm, Old Major, calls all the animals to a secret
meeting. He tells them of his dream of revolutionagainst the cruel Mr. Jones. His speech gives theanimals a new outlook on life. The pigs, beingconsidered the most intelligent, begin to instruct the
other animals. They work out the theory ofAnimalism, run Mr. Jones off the farm, and post sevencommandments above the door of the barn. Sobegins the story.

He is a young boar who becomes
one of the rebellions most valuable
leaders. He draws complicated
plans for the windmill.

uses his ability to manipulate
the animals.
