The Beginning

June2011

The Movimento pela Água (Movement for Water) appeared in June 2011 arousing from a group of nonconformist citizens with the already existing concession of Water management to private companies in several counties around Portugal, but above all with the possibility of Water privatization becomes a national wide forthcoming reality.

The Context

Facing the economic conjuncture we´re in, Water privatization presents under a false excuse, the solution of selling to privates a humanity good, a right of us all and fundamental to the

survival of every living creatures:

€€€ the Water If the Water sector is unsustainable from the

economic point of view, why would private companies be interested in it?

Private entities management of this good aims nothing but the corporative logic – profit and gains.

Water effectively is the deal of the century, an oligopoly giving millions to privates, and so, with its access

certainly becoming conditioned and more expensive to millions of Portuguese

The Aim

We defend that Water, a god essential to life, cannot ever be privatized.

It must be held public and ensured by the State.

In case Government insists on the privatization of the Water, ignoring all the

ongoing campaigns against such measure, we defend as last resort a national referendum, in order to give Portuguese citizens the possibility of deciding about the future of Water in our

country and the management of a resource essential to life itself.

We also defend the inconstituacionality of the concession contracts of the present private management of this good, demanding it´s dismissing without any counterpart or compensation.

The “Movimento Pela Água” intends to be a movement of all citizens who says NO TO WATER PRIVATIZATION.

It´s a totally nonpartisan, secular Movement, independent of any agency, organization, association or organization.

The Referendum

In order to become possible to propose the question of NOT PRIVATIZING WATER to referendum we must collect 75.000 signatures on the Internet.

We are a movement similar to the Italian Movement for Water,

which in a completely independent way, without any state or corporate support, managed to move a country

and, in June 2011, 96% of Italians who voted opposed the

privatization of water.
