Nadya Nitiswari (2008) analyzed the code switching occurrences in the editorial of Gogirl magazine.

Girlfriend magazine has segmented reader with ages ranging from 16 to 23 years old. The rubric published in this magazine are on the cover, up the front, every month, features, fashion and beauty, guru ,boyfriend and front row

The Basic Principles of Perception

Slameto (1995) explains five basic principles of perception:(a)relative, not absolute(b) Selective(c) has rules(d) affected by the expectation and readiness of the stimulant receiver(e) different from one person or group to another

The Factors Influencing Perception

 Sobur (2003, cited in Haryanti, 2007: 15) mentions there are two factors influencing perception, namely internal and external factors

:

The internal factors are as follows: -phsycologycal needs, -personal backgroud, -experience, -personality, - atittude and general belief, -self-acceptance

the external factors influencing perception are as follows: -intesity, -size, -contrast, -movement, -repitition, -intimacy, -novelty

Reasons of Code Switching

According to Holmes (2001), there are three reasons why bilingual people code switch their languages, namely topic, effective, and metaphorical reasons.

Crystal (1987) also adds the reasons of code switching: -a person may not able to express himself in one language, -switching is coomanly occurs when someone want to express solidariry with a particular group.

The advantages: that code switching takes part as a bridge from known (native language) to unknown (foreign language) where the code switchers automatically can learn the new words in the foreign language. (by sert 2005)

The disadvantages: handling a multilingual classrooms which do not share the same native language may cause problems as some students will be neglected. (by cook 2002)

Data source of this study were taken from the articles of Guru rubric in Girlfriend magazine from the editions of June-October 2010.

Analyzing

In analyzing the data, from open-ended questionnaire and the interview, Researcher used coding procedure. he put straight lines under the statements that conveyed readers’ perception of code switching issue, and also utterances that stated about functions, advantages, and disadvantages of code switching. He also wrote codes near the lines such as P for positive, N for negative, F for function A for Advantages, and D for disadvantages.

The data from close-ended questionnaire analyze by following steps:a) Discovering the percentage of each response per itemsb) Calculating the frequency (fo) of the respondents who answer an item

of each questionc) Calculating the percentage of each total frequency of respondents’

4.2 Discussions

Female readers’ perception of code switching Close-Ended Questionnaires

From the analysis results, it was found that the best part of all respondents perceived positively in responding to the code switching occurrences in the magazine. The data obtained from the close-ended questionnaires show 75% respondents agreed with the code switching on the Guru rubric in Girlfriend magazine and 70% respondents disagreed if the Guru rubric only uses one language.

when all respondents were asked about their opinion of the English used on Guru rubric, nearly all of the respondents responded positively.

based on the interview results, when the 10 respondents were asked about their opinion of the code switching in the magazine, all of them (100%) responded positively .

Female readers’ perception about the function of code switching

Data collected from the close-ended questionnaires , open-ended questionnaires, and interview show 55% of 20 respondents agreed that the function is for giving terms that can not be found in Indonesian, 80% or 16 respondents had the same opinion that the function is for elaborating a particular point. Meanwhile, 70% of all 20 respondents also had the same agreement that the function is for giving more information on a particular issue, and 75% or 15 respondents agreed that the function is for placing emphasis on a particular point.

From the data which were gathered through close-ended questionnaires, open-ended questionnaires, and interviews, it can be interpreted that the respondents had gained some advantages and disadvantages out of code switching occurrences on Guru rubric. Fifty five percent of 20 (twenty) respondents agreed that the code switching on the Guru rubric made the articles more communicative. Ninety percent of all respondents also answered that the code switching in the rubric influenced their language proficiency.

Conclusion

The fives functions namely parenthesis, emphasis, quotation, reiteration and untranslatability

Advantages namely to gain the students interest, to avoid boredom reading article, to introduce the students to common utterances in english, to show the main points of article

Disadvantages are about confusion due to different gramatical pettern between English and indonesia, as for readers who did not understand English, it lesson their reading enjoyment.

Sugestion

Further research are suggested to analyze internal or external factors influencing someone’s or a group’s perception, for example observing factors influencing female perception of sexist language. Another suggestion for further research is analyzing functions of code switching mentioned by respondents and the reasons why they mention them
