Organiza(on
• End on (me • Right amount of material • Have a (me budget for each slide • Work towards a take-‐home message • UncluAered slides that enhance your words • Rehearse your talk at least 3 /mes • Did I men(on ending on (me?

Content
• Work towards a take-‐home message • Focus on results, with short mo(va(on • Make it clear and simple • Lots of graphical informa(on, clearly presented • Keep text short, and don’t read from your slide • No long-‐winded introduc(ons – short (<1min) outline
• Punchy summary

During the talk
• Face the audience, not the slides • Your slides should support you, not dominate you • Describe your slides; it takes (me for the audience to process graphical informa(on and understand its significance
• Don’t read text – audience can read much more quickly than you can
• Make eye contact; have good body language • Watch where you stand

Bits and pieces
• Title slide: your name & affilia(on your advisor’s name & affilia(on any funding informa(on the date!
• Acknowledgements to colleagues come at the end and need not be read out.
• Summary slide can be led up at the end for people to read if (me runs out.

Good habits
• UncluAered slides • Clear message • Use a long pointer or a laser pointer • Listen carefully to ques(ons • Be able to nego(ate to a given slide in ONE keystroke (number your slides)
• Wear nice clothes – shows respect for your audience
6
![Page 7: Presentaons* - Oregon State Universitysites.science.oregonstate.edu/~tatej/COURSES/ph403/... · presentations_JT.pptx Author: Janet Tate Created Date: 3/30/2015 6:51:41 PM ...](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071409/61023e6021e366098a6a0f06/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Bad habits
• Holding on to a coffee cup all the way through your talk
• Using your hand to point something out on a slide • Geing in the way of the image -‐ shoulders par(cularly are a problem here!
• Finishing peoples’ ques(ons for them. • Flipping back through slides, desperately searching for one that you could equally well refer to with a well chosen phrase
7
![Page 8: Presentaons* - Oregon State Universitysites.science.oregonstate.edu/~tatej/COURSES/ph403/... · presentations_JT.pptx Author: Janet Tate Created Date: 3/30/2015 6:51:41 PM ...](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071409/61023e6021e366098a6a0f06/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
What not to say
• I'll come back to this if I have (me. (You won't.)
• I won't show you this slide. • You can't really see it from this slide, but ........

![Page 9: Presentaons* - Oregon State Universitysites.science.oregonstate.edu/~tatej/COURSES/ph403/... · presentations_JT.pptx Author: Janet Tate Created Date: 3/30/2015 6:51:41 PM ...](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022071409/61023e6021e366098a6a0f06/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
What to do • Prac(ce your talk beforehand; at least 3 (mes. (It always takes twice as long in the shower, because you go back and correct yourself).
• Look at your slides beforehand from the back of the room.
• Stand well away from the overhead projector when you talk, and face the audience, not the screen. Make eye contact with many people.
• Know your audience. • Relax, smile, you're doing fine!
