Day by Day Itinerary

Sunday, October 19 – CHICAGO / EN ROUTE (I)

We depart Chicago’s O’Hare International airport as we begin the overnight transatlantic journey to Lyon, France.

Monday, October 20 – LYON (I,D)

As the sun begins to rise on the French countryside we arrive in Europe and continue by connecting flight to Lyon, France. On arrival, we’ll meet our cruise repre-sentative for the transfer to Riviera River Cruises MS Wil-liam Shakespeare. It’s now time to sit back and relax with a refreshing drink, and enjoy fine dining in the ship’s su-perb restaurant. What better way is there to discover the awe-inspiring landscapes as we cruise through the south of France and take in the beautiful Provençal scenery.

Tuesday, October 21 – LYON / CRUISING (B,L,D)

We’ll enjoy a leisurely start to our day with a guided tour of Lyon, one of France’s most fascinating cities. The Rhône Valley had been the route of choice for marauding armies and peaceful traders for centuries, and Lyon’s cur-rent site, at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, cried out to be fortified. There are many Roman remains to see, but it was the production of silk that brought Lyon to prominence during the Middle Ages, and throughout the city you can see signs of the wealth that poured in – Re-naissance buildings, imposing churches and Europe’s larg-est pedestrian square, Place Bellecour, with a statue of Louis XIV as its focus. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is crammed with antique shops and intri-guing traboules – narrow covered passageways enabling silk merchants to transport their wares to the river without getting wet – that today are a joy to amble through.

Cruising upstream, we’ll catch the first glimpses of the vine-clad slopes of the hazy green Beaujolais hills as we approach one of the world’s most revered red-wine-producing regions. As the afternoon drifts into evening, we’ll cruise past the town that gives them their name, the white wines of Mâcon.

Wednesday, October 22 – CRUISING

(Beaune & Burgundy) (B,L,D)

Rising this morning we’re berthed in Chalon, gateway to Burgundy and home of Nicéphore Niépce, the inventor of photography. On this morning’s tour we’ll see some of the pretty, yet surprisingly small villages that produce some of the world’s most sublime wines – Meursault, Volnay, Pommard, Gevrey-Chambertin and many more. Nearby is medieval Beaune, Burgundy’s wine capital, which is wonderful to wander around. At its center is the Hospices de Beaune, also known as the Hôtel-Dieu. Origi-nally built in the 15th century as a hospital for the disad-vantaged, it’s a jewel of High Gothic architecture, instant-ly recognizable for its colorful glazed roof tiles arranged in dazzling geometric patterns. Of course, you can’t visit Burgundy without sampling its amazing wines, so we’ll visit the cellars of a leading traditional winemaker for a tour and tasting before returning to the ship for lunch.

Thursday, October 23 – CRUISING

(Vienne & Tournon) (B,L,D)

Overnight the ship has cruised almost imperceptibly downstream. Enjoy breakfast in Vienne, first a Celtic set-tlement, then a Roman stronghold under Julius Caesar. Strikingly located in a narrow section of the Rhône where the river meanders dramatically around a steep bluff, Vienne is a treasure trove of historic remains, including the stunning Roman Temple of Augustus and Livia. To walk around its streets really brings its heritage to life.

This afternoon we enter perhaps the most picturesque sec-tion of the Rhône as the river squeezes and twists past Condrieu, Saint-Rambert-d’Albon and Saint-Vallier, with wooded cliffs rising high on both sides. Later we moor in the pretty provincial town of Tournon, with its imposing castle and tree-lined avenues on one side of the river, while on the other are the steep vine-covered hillsides of Hermitage, where another of the world’s most revered wines is produced.

Friday, October 24 – CRUISING

(Ardeche Gorges) (B,L,D)

This morning we cruise effortlessly downstream. In the distance you’ll catch glimpses of the Alps and, as we ap-proach Valence, the landscape gradually becomes less green with more ochres and magentas, the houses have sloping terracotta roofs typical of the Mediterranean and the air carries heady aromas of pine and cypress. You can only be in the Midi or – as we call it – the south of France.

After lunch we’ll explore one of France’s most outstand-ing landscapes – the Ardèche Gorges, whose scale is a fit-ting reminder of Mother Nature’s awesome power. Sheer limestone cliffs plunge almost 1,000 feet to the river’s blue waters, which elegantly snake their way through stupen-dous rock formations, culminating in a huge natural arch, the Pont d’Arc. Caves, grottoes and natural sculptures create marvelous views at every turn before we return to the gentler slopes of the Rhône Valley, where our ship is moored in charming Viviers, a medieval town clustered around its 12th-century cathedral.

Saturday, October 25 – CRUISING

(Arles & Pont du Gard) (B,L,D)

We awake under the azure skies of Provence amid the warm stone colors of Arles, many of whose historic monu-ments are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Although small in size, it was the key stronghold on the Roman road to Spain, one of the empire’s richest possessions. A guid-ed tour will help us appreciate the finer points of Arles’s magnificent Roman remains, including the splendid am-phitheater, one of the best preserved in the world, and the ancient necropolis with its extraordinary atmosphere. The disturbed but great genius of an artist Van Gogh lived in Arles for just over a year, from February 1888. It was his most prolific period and, inspired by Arles and the light and beauty of the Provençal countryside, he produced around 300 works, including The Night Café, The Sower and, of course, Sunflowers.

After lunch we’ll visit the amazing Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct, one of the wonders of the ancient world. No amount of fame can diminish the first sight of this 2,000-year-old structure, which was the highest bridge built in the Empire – the Romans themselves considered it the most important testimony to their greatness. Its statistics are staggering: over 900 feet long and almost 160 feet high, with its stones each weighing up to six tons.

Sunday, October 26 – CRUISING (Avignon) (B,L,D)

This morning we awake in the medieval city of Avignon where massive ramparts enclose one of the most fascinat-ing towns in Southern France. After breakfast we’ll em-bark on a guided tour of one of the most extraordinary and intriguing cities in France. Avignon’s destiny changed during the 14th century, when the Pope’s court moved here to avoid strife in Rome. Igniting a century of prosperity, the Pontiff commissioned a host of ambitious building projects, and today the city is immaculately pre-served, nestling behind its almost-intact 14th-century walls and boasting more remarkable monuments, superb-ly decorated buildings, churches, chapels and convents than you can possibly count. Most important is the stun-ning Popes’ Palace, made up of two buildings that togeth-er form the largest Gothic palace in the world. With tur-rets, towers, parapets and other fortifications, its exterior resembles a mighty fortress, while the interior is a tour de force of medieval architecture and ornamentation, adorned with priceless frescoes, Gobelin tapestries and graceful sculptures.

Monday, October 27 – CRUISING / NICE

(Aix-En-Provence) (B,D)

This morning we disembark from Riviera River Cruises MS William Shakespeare and board our motor coach as we travel to beautiful, fountain-filled Aix-en-Provence, the beloved city of the great artist Paul Cezanne. An in-troduction to Aix will take us along the Cours Mirabeau, the wide avenue which has become the center of the town’s activity. On the north side of the Cours Mirabeau we’ll find shops, patisseries and cafes, while the south is home to stately houses built by wealthy families during the 17th and 18th centuries. Along the route, we’ll also see the cast-iron Fontaine de la Rotonde, the Fountain of the Nine Canons, and the Fountain of King Rene, under whose rule Aix flourished during the 1400s. Then we’ll visit the Cathedral of Saint Sauveur, home to the triptych of The Burning Bush showing Moses receiving the word of God from an angel.

Then we travel north to the capital of Côte d’ Azur – the French Riviera - Nice. Skirting the pebbly shores of the Baie des Anges, Nice has an ideal location on the Medi-terranean Sea and boasts a mild climate, bright sun, di-verse landscapes, and of course beautiful beaches with blue azure waters. Its history and monuments, numerous museums, baroque heritage, and Old Town with colorful markets offer something for everybody.

Tuesday, October 28 – NICE (Monte Carlo) (B,D)

Today we travel north along the spectacular coastline of Côte d’ Azur to the independent Principality of Monaco, the home of millionaires, opulent villas, flower-covered terraces and pleasure yachts anchored in the sparkling bay. Monte Carlo’s main sights are clustered around the pedestrian Place du Casino Square where we’ll see both the stunning Opera House and Casino. Next, we’ll take in a spectacular view of the luxury yachts anchored in the sparkling bay as we make our way to Monaco-Ville locat-ed on the promontory known as the Rock. From here we’ll begin a walking tour of the Old Town and view the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Built with the stark white stones from La Turbie in 1875, this Roman-Byzantine-style building is where Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace Kelly married. Then we’re headed to Pal-ace Square, dominated by the magnificent residence of Prince Albert II, to witness the traditional Changing of the Guard. Following our tour, free time will be set aside to explore the twisting lanes and vaulted passageways that make up Monaco-Ville which dates back to the 14th century.

Wednesday, October 29 – NICE / CHICAGO (B,I)

This morning we travel to Nice International Airport in preparation for the return journey home. No better time to reflect on memories of our The Rhone River Cruise, Pro-vence & Monte Carlo to last a lifetime and new friend-ships made along the way!
