The two teams last met in the preseason in 2001 with Kansas City winning by a narrow 10-9 margin at Arrowhead (8/18/01). The last five preseason meetings between the clubs have been decided by five points or less, dating back to ’83. The Chiefs and Bears are both seeking to resume their winning traditions in 2008. Kansas City earned a playoff appearance in Herm Edwards’ debut campaign with the Chiefs in 2006, while Lovie Smith’s squad earned a berth in Super Bowl XLI following the 2006 campaign. A retooled Chiefs squad is seeking to rebound from last year’s 4-12 season, while the Bears are attempting to improve on last year’s 7-9 effort. A pair of former assistant coaches under Tony Dungy in Tampa Bay, both Edwards and Smith are building defenses in the images of Dungy’s vaunted Bucs squads. The defensive improvement continued for the Chiefs a year ago as Kansas City ranked in the NFL’s top five in nine different different defensive categories. The Chiefs led the league in third- down defense (31.3%) and forced a league-high 121 negative plays. KC also ranked second in the NFL in Red Zone defense (14.5 TD pct.). New Kansas City offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has a host of weapons at his disposal. Two-time Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson returns for the Chiefs after missing the final eight games of the 2007 campaign. Nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez needs just 179 yards to overtake TE Shannon Sharpe (10,060) for the most receiving yards by a tight end in NFL history. QB Brodie Croyle leads the Chiefs offense after starting six games a year ago. In Chicago, QBs Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton are battling to determine who is the Bears starter on Opening Day. Kansas City returns home to Arrowhead next week for its 2008 pre- season home debut vs. Arizona (8/16). The Bears travel to Seattle next week to face the Seahawks at Qwest Field (8/16). Although Chicago owns a 6-4 advantage in the regular season series against the Chiefs, Kansas City boasts a 6-2 edge in preseason action vs. the Bears. The Chiefs hold a slim 10-8 advantage in all contests played between the two clubs. Chicago won the last regular season meeting by a 20-10 count at Soldier Field (9/16/08). Kansas City’s last regular season victory against the Bears was a 31-3 decision at Arrowhead (12/28/03). 2007 Stats and NFL Rankings Total Offense ..................................... 276.8 (31) 293.3 (27) Rush Offense..................................... 78.0 (32) 83.1 (30) Pass Offense ..................................... 198.8 (20) 210.1 (15) Total Defense .................................... 319.4 (13) 354.7 (28) Rush Defense .................................... 130.6 (28) 122.9 (24) Pass Defense .................................... 188.9 (5) 231.8 (27) Turnover Ratio ................................... -11 (28t) -1 (17t) Points/Game ...................................... 14.1 (31) 20.9 (18) Opp. Points/Game ............................. 20.9 (14) 21.8 (16) ALL-TIME PRESEASON SERIES Date Result Location Stadium 8/23/67 W, 66-24 Kansas City Municipal 11/13/77 W, 24-10 South Bend, Ind. In 2007 Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt commissioned a patch that the Chiefs wore on their uniforms to honor his father’s memory. The

design of the patch is historically signficant. The patch prominently features the American Football League logo to serve as a reminder of Hunt’s formation of the AFL and the lasting impact the American Football League has made on the game of professional football. True to Hunt’s humble spirit, the letters “LH” are subtly displayed on the patch, symbolizing the fact that the

Chiefs Founder always put the best interests of the league ahead of his own. The patch is affixed on the left chest of both Kansas City’s home and away jerseys, meaning this piece of woven symbolism will always be over the heart of every Chiefs player. Beginning in 2008, the Lamar Hunt patch will be a permanant fixture on the Chiefs uniform.

Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas City history on January 9, 2006. The fi rst coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season, he helped the 2006 Chiefs become just the fi fth team since 2000 to overcome an 0-2 start and still make the postseason. Edwards guided the N.Y. Jets to three postseason berths during a fi ve-year stint (2001-

05) with that franchise. He originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs (’92-94). Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 27, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00. Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

Chiefs nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez ranks fi rst in NFL history among tight ends in receptions (820) and TD receptions (66). He ranks second in receiving yardage (9,882), trailing only Shannon Sharpe (10,060). Gonzalez’s 66 total TDs with the Chiefs trail only RB Priest Holmes (83) in KC annals. Gonzalez ranks second in franchise history with 9,896 combined net yards. In addition, no tight end in NFL history owns more consecutive 60-catch campaigns (nine) than Gonzalez. Gonzalez owns 23 career 100-yard receiving games, the most in Chiefs history. Those 23 100-yard games are second in NFL history among TEs, trail-ing only Kellen Winslow (24). Gonzalez extended his team-record streak of games with at least one reception to 115 contests with at least one catch in every game last season. Only Ozzie Newsome (150) has a longer streak by a TE in NFL history.

Kansas City’s defense kept the Chiefs in the game throughout the day by forcing three Chicago turnovers, but it wasn’t enough as the Chiefs dropped a 20-10 decision at Soldier Field. A special teams TD and a bit of trickery helped the Bears build a 17-7 halftime advantage as Chicago never looked back.

The Kansas City defense made its first statement on the Bears second offensive play of the game. Chicago QB Rex Grossman hit WR Bernard Berrian for an 18-yard gain, but Chiefs S Bernard Pollard forced a fumble and DT Alfonso Boone recovered it. However, Kansas City was unable to mount a drive when it took over at midfield.

Chicago put together the first scoring drive of the afternoon with 79-yard march that took over eight minutes. The balanced drive featured eight rushing plays and seven passing plays. The Bears used a bit of chicanery to score their first touchdown when Grossman hit tackle-eligible John St. Clair for a two-yard scoring pass and a 7-0 lead.

That lead quickly doubled as WR Devin Hester returned a Chiefs punt 73 yards for a touchdown minutes later. Chicago would tack on a 46-yard field goal to give the home squad a 17-0 edge with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter.

The Chiefs finally got on the board at the end of the first half when QB Damon Huard engineered the two-minute drill to perfection. After a 31-yard completion to TE Kris Wilson, Huard hit TE Tony Gonzalez for a 26-yard pickup. On the next play, Huard lofted a pass to the back corner of the end zone where rookie WR Dwayne Bowe hauled in the pass – which was actually intended for Gonzalez – for a 16-yard TD. Bowe’s first career score cut the Chicago lead to 17-7.

The Bears would turn another punt return into points in the third quarter when Hester’s 31-yard return set up a 38-yard field goal from K Robbie Gould.

The Kansas City defense forced its second turnover of the day when LB Napoleon Harris intercepted a Grossman pass. K Dave Rayner, who was signed during the week, was good on his first FG attempt for Kansas City. He split the uprights on a 45-yard field goal to cut Chicago’s lead to 20-10.

The Chiefs caught a bad break in the early going of the fourth quarter when a 35-yard Huard-to-Bowe flea flicker into the end zone was nullified by an illegal motion penalty. Instead of the seven points, Kansas City would get nothing as a subsequent 48-yard field goal try by Rayner was blocked four plays later.

LB Donnie Edwards would give Kansas City life as he intercepted a Grossman pass and returned it to the Chicago 18-yard line on the Bears next possession. The Chiefs, however, came up empty again as Huard’s fade pass for WR Samie Parker was intercepted by S Danieal Manning in the end zone.

Kansas City would get one final opportunity to put points on the board when QB Brodie Croyle relieved a wounded Huard. Croyle methodically marched the Chiefs to the Chicago 24-yard line, but RB Michael Bennett was stripped by CB Charles Tillman with 2:21 remaining and the Bears were able to run the clock out to preserve the 20-10 victory.
