The doses of all the formulae are propor-tioned for children who have reached the ageof two years, one teaspoonful (f’3j) being thedose of each preparation.
The following Table represents the dosesfor different ages, apportioned according tothis standard: —

In prescribing, the Physician will writethe number of the Prescription, its title, therecord number or name of thepa tient, and thedirections for using it, e.g. :

Date. Signature.Unless otherwise directed, the apothecary
will always dispense three fluidounces (fgiij)of the fluid preparations.
For convenience and certainty of measure-ment when the dose to be prescribed is lessthan one fluidrachm (say l'si or fgss), theapothecary will dilute aproportional quantity(say fgvj or fjjss) of the mixture with suffi-cient of some suitable menstruumto raise theamount to three fluidounces (fgiij), and thepatient will take of this one teaspoonful(fgj).

INFANT DIET.
Diet from Birth to Age of Six Months.(Five to six meals in 24 hours.)
Milk, Cream, Lime-water, Arrowroot Water.Take four tablespoonfuls of each, place in
bottle with a lump of sugar, warm the wholeby standing bottle in warm water.
Arrowroot Water is made by taking one anda half teaspoonfuls of arrowroot, rubbing itdown until smooth, with a tablespoonful ofcold water, and then adding one pint of boilingwater, stirring all the time.
Diet from Six to Twelve Months Old.(Five meals in the day.)
First Meal, 7 A. M.Mellin’s food, one tablespoonful, or Flour
Ball grated, one to two teaspoonfuls.Hot water, four tablespoonfuls.Warm milk, enough to make half a pint.Dissolve the Mellin’s food or rub down
the grated Flour Ball in the hot water bystirring, then add the milk, and mix tho-roughly.
Second Meal, 10.30 A. M. Third Meal, 2P. M.A breakfast cupful of milk with four

BARLEY WATER.To prepare barley water, put two good tea-
spoonfuls of washed pearl barley with a pintof cold water in a saucepan, and boil slowlydown to two-thirds. Strain.
BEEF-TEA.Take one pound of lean beef, and mince it.
Put it, with its juice, into an earthen vesselcontaining a pint of tepid water, and let thewhole stand for one hour; strain well, squeez-ing all the juice from the meat. Place on thelire, and slowly raise just to the boiling point,stirring it briskly all the time. Season withsalt and pepper to taste.

In administering this, always be careful tostir up the sediment.
FLOUR BALL.Take one pound of good flour—unbolted, if
possible—tie it up very tightly in a pudding-bag; put it in a pot of boiling water early inthe morning, and let it boil till bedtime, thentake it out and let it dry. In the morningpeel off from the surface, and throw away, thethin rind of dough, and with a grater, gratedown the hard dry mass into a powder. Touse this, take from one to two teaspoonfuls ofthe powder, rub it down till smooth with atablespoonful of cold milk, and add a tumbler-ful of hot milk, stirring it well all the time.
LIME-WATER.Take a piece of unslaked lime, as large as
a walnut, put it into two quarts of clear water,stir about thoroughly, allow to settle, and useonly from the top.
WINE WHEY.Boil a pint of fresh milk ; while boiling,
pour in a small tumblerful of sherry wine(eight tablespoonfuls), bring it to the boil asecond time, being careful not to stir it; assoon as it boils set it aside until the curdsettles, and pour off the clear whey.
