What is a Phase-Change Material (PCM)?

9

COMMON EXAMPLES:

Any substance that stores or releases a lot of heat as it changes phase.

Hand warmer:Warms hands (releases heat) as saturated sodium acetate solution crystallizes to a solid

Bucket of ice:Cools drinks (absorbs heat) as ice changes to water

The Market for PCMs

10

Expected to increase from US$563 million in 2014 to $1.5 billion in 2020.

The largest industries driving this growth include:

Largest markets:

Europe North America Asia-Pacific

▪Construction▪HVAC

▪Textiles▪Electronics

▪Logistics

Microencapsulated PCMs

11

Tiny particles or droplets of PCMs, each enclosed in a “shell” made of polymers or inorganic materials. The shells remain solid when the PCMs change phase.

Example 1. A schematic (adapted from Zhang et al., 2009) demonstrating the in situ polymerization of MicroPCM, with n-octadecane as the core PCM and melamine-formaldehyde as the co-polymer shell.

Example 2: Drywall with enhanced insulating properties using BASF’s Micronal® MicroPCM. The MicroPCMs are embedded in a gypsum core and marketed as ThermalCORETM panels by National Gypsum.

Macroencapsulated PCMs

12

Macroencapsulation (>1mm diameter) with temperature-resistant shells. Store up to 500°C of heat.

One technique to macroencapsulate PCM

Textile Industry Applications

13

Improves the heat management (comfort) of clothing and bedding – keeping out high heat and cold.

Current research challenges:

Origins: NASA research in the 1980s–protecting astronauts from extreme temperature fluctuations in space.

▪Weight of added PCMs▪ Flammability vs. cost of PCMs (low-cost

PCMs are often made of paraffin)

Body Temperature Control

14

The Embrace infant warmer has already cared for over 200,000 infants and costs $25, <1% of a standard incubator price.

Cooling vests like this model from Glacier Tek are lined with PCMs and work at over 40°C for several hours, recharge in as little as minutes, weigh only 3-5 pounds, and cost $100-$200.

Safe core body temperature is about 36.1 to 37.2℃

Thermal Battery Management

15

Battery overheating can cause reduced power output and even fires. Hybrid and electric vehicles are increasing the need for better thermal management.

Solution: Surround batteries with PCMs

to absorb excess heat.

Miniature “Barcoding”

16

Labels in drug powders or capsulesLabeled inks for counterfeit detection

HOW IT WORKS:Add a homogenous mixture of PCMs with different melting points into the tracked material. To read the identifier, heat a sample of the PCMs to different temperatures and observe the melting peaks present at each temperature as the materials melt. Each combination of peaks is a unique number.

Serial numbers on bulletsExplosive-proof identifiers embedded in bomb powder

Just 50 substances provide enough unique numbers for most applications.

PCMs as Biomarkers

17

How Does it work?

Nanoparticle PCMs are attached to ligands that bind proteins, DNA, etc. that indicate specific diseasesLigand-PCM incubated in a body fluid to be testedSolid substrate that can bind the ligand-PCM is added to the fluid, capturing the PCMs. Substrate withdrawn from fluid.PCMs are “washed” from the substrate and read using techniques similar to the barcoding approach
