Jesus Tells of a Samaritan’s Kindness

Luke 10:25-37

He did not stop to help him. He walked right past and went on his way. That man was not kind. A man from Samaria rode down the road on his donkey. (Move figure 1-4 along road to figure 1-1. Substitute figure 1-5 for figure 1-1.) He saw the hurt man. He wanted to help him. He stopped the donkey. He went to the hurt man. He saw all the hurt places. He doctored them. Then, he put bandages on them so that they would heal. He picked up the hurt man and put him on the donkey. (Substitute figure 1-6 for figures 1-5 and 1-4.) The kind Samaritan man took the hurt man to an inn. An inn was a house where travelers could stay. The kind man took care of the hurt man that night. Before he left the next morning, the good Samaritan paid the innkeeper some money. “Take care of him,” the kind man said. “Whatever it costs more than this, I will pay it when I come again.” Which of the three men was a good neighbor to the man attacked by robbers? The first man passed by without stopping. Was he a good neighbor? No. The second man walked past him without stopping. Was he a good neighbor? No. The Samaritan man stopped to help the hurt man. Was he a good neighbor? Yes. That is what Jesus wants us to do. A neighbor is another person who needs our help. Jesus wants us to be kind to everyone.

Visuals: Flash card scenes 2-1 through 2-4

Resource: Item 3

Item 3—“Be Ye Kind” Photo Poster. This teaching aid will emphasize Unit 1 theme of showing kindness. Display it at children’s eye level so that they can see it easily and learn that kindness applies to real life. Laminate or cover with clear Con-Tact adhesive to make the poster more durable for little ones to touch. File it after finishing this unit to have for future lessons about kindness.

Prepare the visuals: Trim away borders and cut apart visual scenes 2-1 through 2-4. Attach each to a piece of construction paper to make a mat for them which enhances their appearance. Stack them in the order of use. Move the front picture to the back to reveal the next scene as you tell the story details.

Bible Story Joshua was ready to lead the people of Israel into their new country. The people already living there were

God’s enemies. They did not love God. They worshiped idol gods. God wanted His people to have the land. “Go see what Jericho is like,” Joshua said to two of his men. “Then, we will know how to attack.” The men went to Jericho. (Show flash card 2-1.) They knocked on Rahab’s door. She wanted to help God’s people. She quickly took them up to the flat rooftop of her house to hide them from the king’s officers. (Move flash card 2-1 to the back to show flash card 2-2.) Rahab had flax stalks drying on her roof. She covered the men with them so that no one could find them. Knock, knock! Soon the king’s officers came looking for the spies from Israel. Rahab sent the king’s men away. She protected the men from Israel. She went back to the roof to talk with them. (Change to flash card 2-3). “I know God is with you,” she said to them. “My people are all afraid because we know God will give you our land. We have heard how God has helped you. He will keep on being with you.” The men from Israel were glad to hear that. They would tell Joshua when they went back to report to him. “Since I have been kind to hide you from the king’s men, please show kindness to my family,” Rahab said. “Protect us and let us live when you come to take Jericho.” “Yes,” the men said. “We will protect you and everyone who is in your house.” Then, Rahab helped the men escape from Jericho. (Change to flash card 2-4.) Her house was a part of the city wall. They went through a window in the back of her house to get outside the city. Rahab had a strong red cord that she let them climb down to get to the ground. “Tie this red cord in your window so that we will know where you are. Bring all your family into the house with you. We will save your life because you have been kind to us.” That is just what they did. When the men of Israel came to de stroy Jericho, they went to the house with the red cord hanging from the window. There was Rahab and all her family. The men brought her and her family to safety outside the city. Then, they destroyed Jericho as God told them to do.
