TEACHERDEVOTIONALRead:Luke1:26-36GodwantedMarytoknowhisplanandherpartinit.ButwhenGabrielproclaimedtheamazingnewstothishumble,young,teenager,shewasconfused.Gabrielsaidshewasfavoredandblessed—andshehadnoideawhathewastalkingabout.ThismaybethekindofattitudethatJesuswastalkingaboutinMatthew5,whenhesaid,“Blessedarethepoorinspirit.”Marywaspoorinspirit.Thiskindofpovertycanbeeconomic—whichMarysurelyhad.Itcanalsobeasortofhumility—thinkingofothersmorethanyouthinkaboutyourself.Butprimarilythispovertyisspiritual—anattitudeofbrokennessbeforeGod,fullydependentonhismercyandgrace.ThisspiritualpovertymaybewhyMaryfeltconfusedaboutwhyshewasspecial.Sheknewshewasn’t.ButshealsoknewthatGodwasextraordinary.So,sheaskedacouplemoreclarifyingquestions,andthen,withnoideahowGod’splanwouldunfold,shetotallysurrenderedtoit.ShefixedhereyesonGod—poorinspiritanddependingonagraciousFather.SheevenwentasfarassayingshewastheLord’s“slave.”Inourculture,wecanhavemorespiritualwealththanpoverty.Wehaveatendencytofixoureyesonourselves.Weusuallythinkthatwehavewhatittakestoworkonourproblems,tosortoutourrelationships,eventoworkonoursalvation.WefitGodintoourlivesandplanswherewecan.Butwecertainlydon’taskhimregularlywhatwecandoforhim—howwecanservehim,andifwecanbehisslave.ButGodhassomethingsomuchbiggerandbetterinmindforus.Hewantstoblessuswithhisamazinglove.Hewantstogiveushiskingdom.Butwecan’treceiveallthatifwethinkwealreadyhaveeverythingweneed.That’swhywehavetoadjustourattitude.Wehavetobehumble,likeMary,butmorethanthat,humble,likeJesus.Philippians2:5-8tellsus,“MakeyourownattitudethatofChristJesus,who,…emptiedhimselfbyassumingtheformofaslave,takingonthelikenessofmen.”Godcametous.Itwastheultimateexampleofhumility,andlove.Allwehavetodoisacceptit;bytotallysurrenderingtoit.WhatplansdoyouneedtosurrendertoGod?WhatwoulditlooklikeforyoutobeGod’sslave?
