Purpose

Describe ebook read aloud as a reading experience for young children in the Head Start setting.

Research Questions

• What are the design features of the ebook read aloud settings?

• What are characteristics of the read aloud activity using ebooks?

• What are teachers’ impressions of the ebook read aloud experience and the ebook stories?

• What are patterns/features of children’s interactions with ebooks at the touch screen and with the iPod Touch.

• What is the influence of e-book read aloud experiences on children’s word learning?

8-week cycleMarch 1-April 30/May 7

• Select 3 children who score between 85-115 on the PPVT-IV.• Read the designated ebook each week on 2 different days for about

10-15 minutes each in the ebook-nook – Sessions will be videotaped with a web cam and a FLIP.

• Teach 5 words in each session, using Say It, Tell It, Do It strategy– with exception of session 1.

• After each session, ask a series of questions about the experience,• After week 4 encourage children to explore the ebook on their own

using the iPod Touch tool. Show children how to use the iPod Touch during play time.

• Debrief with PD team at the end of weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 on Adobe Connect – Sessions will be audio-taped.

Week 1- Days 1 & 2

Week One (March 1) – audio only; no iPod Touches

Day 1: *Teacher introduces children to the ebook nookWe will listen to stories together in the ebook nook. Sometimes we will stop and talkabout what is in the story. Sometimes we will talk about new words we are learning.In our ebooks we use our pointer finger to gently touch *** here***. Watch I amgoing to gently touch with my pointer finger and our story will start. Let’s listen. [PlayBugs! Bugs! Bugs! All the way through.]

*Teacher/coach conducts CBDM on word sample with individual children. Day 2: *Teacher shares Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! with pre-selected stops to teach 5

words. Stop 1: title page; title, author, illustratorStops 2-6: teach new words: Say It; Tell It; Do ItStop 6: After reading review the words & ask if enjoyed the story Turn on web cam; coach uses FLIP. Repeat for each session.

• Read the designated ebook 2x each week• Teach the vocabulary, using Say It, Tell It, Do It.
