Clark County Seeks Public Comment on Updated Solid Waste Management Plan

A public comment period began on Nov. 7 and ends Monday, Dec. 8. The draft updated solid waste man-agement plan update sets five-year goals for Clark County, including increasing the county’s recycling rate to 55 percent from 53.9 percent and keeping 70 percent of the county’s waste stream out of landfills, up from 66.2 percent. For more information and links to the updated plan visit http://www.clark.wa.gov/envi-ronment/news-release.asp?pkNewsSeq=3052

Vancouver Police Department Holiday Safety

The Vancouver Police Department wishes you a safe and happy holiday season. Here are some helpful crime prevention tips to consider: Never leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle, better yet never leave valuables in your vehicle at

all! If you must store valuables in a vehicle place them in the trunk or hidden storage area prior to arriving at your destination. Thieves often watch drivers in parking lots to see where they store a val-uable, wait for the vehicle to be unattended and break the window and steal the valuables. “Hiding” items under the seat does not work, it’s the first place a thief will look.

When shopping, don’t get overloaded with too many packages. Keep at least one hand free so you can easily keep track of how many packages you may have and so that you can easily access your car keys to enter your vehicle without delay.

Stay alert in public spaces. Know where your purse, packages, wallet, cell phone and other valuables are at all times and never leave valuables unattended. Take note of anyone that may be following you and don’t hesitate to contact a store employee or security personnel if someone is acting suspicious.

Check mail daily and make sure all packages left at the doorstep are retrieved immediately, or arrange to pick up packages if possible if you will be gone during times when they are likely to be delivered. Work with your neighbors to keep an eye out for suspicious vehicles or people who may be in the area to steal mail or packages. Report all suspicious activity and get license numbers and descriptions of individuals.

Since the holidays fall during the winter please do not leave your vehicle unattended while warming it up. Thieves look for exhaust in the cold morning air and take the opportunity that presents itself.

Compost is rich in nutrients that help plants to grow, acts to retain soil moisture and can help suppress plant disease. Using compost is good for your soil and can reduce the need to irrigate your garden or use toxic herbicides or pesticides. It’s easy to turn your yard debris and kitchen scraps into compost. Just as in nature, leaves and plant debris feed and enrich the soil, you can recycle the food scraps from your kitchen and yard debris back into your soil.

Learn how by attending a Free Backyard Composting Workshop, or Wormshop ($35 materials fee). The Master Composter/Recycler Program is a volunteer-based community program whose mission is to educate the community about recycling and help keep recyclable materials out of the waste-stream.

Compost bins are for sale at Columbia Springs; the FreeGarden brand compost bin is $55 and the Seattle Composter is $65.
