Evaluating Websites & Other Information Resources
The Art of Public Speaking by Stephen E. LucasAuthorship:
1. Who “wrote” the website?
2. What are his/her qualifications?
Consider education, career, etc.
3. Is he/she an expert on this topic?
4. Does the website mention an
author at all?
Sponsorship:
1. Who is supporting the website? What group made it
possible?
2. Does the sponsor create a bias? Can the
information be trusted?
3. Especially important if you cannot find the author’s
name
4. Look for an “About Us” link
5. How does the URL address end?

longer useful?

bottom of the page

more quickly, but it is not
necessarily current
PERSUASIVE SPEECH OR PERSUASIVE SPEECH OR ESSAYESSAY
• Persuasive research contains information to help people make a decision.
• Purpose is to persuade people to change in some way. – To change the way they think about
something– To change the way they do things– To do something that they do not do now
• Your speech will be successful if your audience is willing to make the change you suggested.
Choosing a TopicChoosing a Topic • Select something of interest to you.
• How long do you have to do this project? Plan time to modify topic and prepare speech.
• Be prepared to adapt your topic based on availability of information.
• Evaluate and refine the topic. Keep your audience in mind!
• Create a series of questions to answer
• Identify the main concepts or keywords (think of a series of synonyms to describe your topic).
Finding Background Finding Background InformationInformation
• Prepare a brief Overview/Outline—what
information is needed to support your
position?
– Determine significant dates, names, and places
– Define terminology specific to the topic
– Use General Reference Resources as good ways
to gather background information.
– Related subjects are for finding information on
your topic, especially if your topic is a narrow
one.
Assembling the Persuasive Assembling the Persuasive ArgumentArgument • Search for books in the library Catalog. Information
ranges from general background to very detailed and specific information.
• Search for articles using Research Databases. Articles are often more current than books, especially important for current issues.
• Find statistical sources of data to support your position. Statistics also make good visuals.
• Government Documents are also great sources for statistics. Find official governmental positions on issues as seen in reports, legislation, and law.
• Use biographical sources to find information on a person's life and ideas.
