Transcript of Preparation for the Coming SLOs
Preparation for the Coming SLOsDr. John R. Schmidt
Disclaimer and Explanation
In the actual presentation, I made the point that what we were about to experience was only one person’s point of view – mine. My purpose was to make everybody in the room think about the pending shift to Outcomes-Based Accreditation and how we might affect that change.
Consider attending future conferences in which the Guidance Committee will undoubtedly include workshops on specific topics to help us make this transition.
My thanks to all who attended this presentation.
- Dr. John R. Schmidt, Ferris State University
ACCE Mid-Year Meeting, Tampa, 21 February 2014
Outcomes-Based Accreditation
PROVE IT !
What? !
Of course I can
estimate work!
But I really
know this stuff . . .
My alarm clock broke.
Final ? !
Why do I
have to take the final ? !
Outcomes-Based Accreditation

Capstone Experience and Signature Courses
Some form of a Culminating Experience
• Typically, a “project management” course.
• Team exercises, running through a project.
• Internships (akin to student teaching for educators).
• Co-Ops.
• A unique course in your program.
• Service Learning Project.
• Others.
IntroduceReinforce Master
• Reading plans
• Using Scales
• Understanding how to use a computer
• Simple QTOs
• Using Timberline or other specific SW
• Calculating simple crew productivity
• Apply all previously learned concepts to a project estimate

Course Learning Outcomes CLO
One program’sexample of CONM 211: Construction Quantity Estimating.
Upon completion the student will be able to:1. Search the bid documents for general cost items.2. Perform quantity takeoff for the excavation, concrete, structural steel
and carpentry.3. Calculate productivity rate, total number of work hours, total days and
the labor and equipment unit costs for numerous activities.4. Compile an entire bid proposal including pricing, subcontractor quote
and overhead for a project, and unbalance the bid.5. Complete the Bid forms correctly according to the Instructions to
Bidders and submit at a simulated public bid opening.6. Develop estimating spreadsheets for a computerized quantity takeoff
and pricing and summarizing the estimated costs..

AssessWhat to Assess? SLOs . . . PLOs (if different & mapped) . . . ?
But NOT CLOs !
How to Assess? Tests Questions ; Case Studies ; Lab Reports ; Homework Problems ; Peer Assessments ; Team Evaluations ; Practicums ; Other Reports
Define Success. e.g., 75% of students will earn at least 85% on this assessment.
Schedule Assessment. When & how often? End of course? End of "signature" or "capstone" experience?

Results
Track & record the results of these assessments.
For example:
Review of 35 capstone projects revealed 95% were able to satisfactorily complete all except the estimating activity. Only 65% of the students successfully completed that portion.

For example:
Program faculty will discuss the students' estimating weaknesses at the August retreat, with changes incorporated in the following semester.
