YOU SUCK!!!A Vampire’s Tale of Conformity

The school year in small town Moose Falls has just begun when some unusual new students arrive–political refugees from a small country in Eastern Europe. They are greeted with suspicion, which only increases as strange, inexplicable things begin to occur, with hilarious results.

Who are these pale, black-clad strangers who seem to have supernatural powers? Some students welcome them, while others remain hostile, as a crisis is about to happen, which tests the powers of everyone.

Take a light-hearted look at the troubles of a teen-age vampire and his supernatural side-kicks as they confront the scariest of all creations–the North American teenager.

* Marissa Staddon Memorial Scholarship FundMarissa Staddon Memorial Scholarship Fund, through the Calgary Arts Summer School Associa-tion (CASSA), will award a $100 scholarship to the most outstanding Piano Camp student each year.

** Irina Ginzburg Memorial FundIrina Ginzburg was an enthusiastic supporter of CASSA’s summer programs. She was first a volunteer at Piano Camp, then joined the teaching staff and became an active member of the CASSA Board of Directors. In her honour, a scholarship will be awarded to the most improved Piano Camp student(s) each year.

*** Eileen Craig ScholarshipsTwo scholarships ($50 each) are awarded to Piano Camp participants who are in school grades seven to ten. Recipients should display a caring attitude towards fellow students and faculty, and hard work must be demonstrated before and during the camp.

DARREN DYCK, Director, has been teaching with the Calgary Board of Education for 20 years and is a principal at Belfast School. His academic background includes a B. Ed. (Drama Major) and a M. Arts in Drama Education. He has been involved in drama and theatre for the past 25 years and believes that students’ growth and development is achieved best when children are actively engaged in drama experiences. His credits as a director of theatre for young people include over 30 different shows and most recently include Yearbook Reflections, West Side Story, and Secret of the Forest.

JACLYN LUFF, Choreographer, is a well-rounded dancer who has completed a degree in B. Kin. and B. Ed. at the University of Calgary. She is a teacher with the Calgary Board of Education and a dance teacher at James Fowler High School. Ms. Luff has extensive experience working with children of all ages through a variety of camps. Her work as a passionate and talented dance teacher has kept her busy for over 10 years. She specializes in Latin dancing and also enjoys teaching a variety of styles including Jazz, Modern, Creative Movement, Contemporary, Hip Hop and West African. Ms. Luff is eager to share her gifts with the students at CASSA.

TREVOR WATERS, Musical Director, was a music teacher with the Calgary Board of Education for over 30 years. He taught in several schools throughout the city, and recently retired from the William Aberhart High School, where he directed concert choir, jazz band and vocal jazz, and was also the Curriculum Leader for Fine Arts. He has a B. Ed. (Secondary Music), a Diploma of Fine Arts (Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble Conducting) and a second Diploma of Fine Arts (Kodaly Music Education), all from the University of Calgary. Mr. Waters is also a collaborative pianist with Calgary Choral, and works as a clinician with both bands and choirs. He recognizes the importance of excellence in performing, but believes it is equally as important to foster enjoyment and love for music that will last a lifetime.

LILY CHOW, Set & Custome Designer, has taught for the Calgary Board of Education for the last thirteen years. She is currently the Fine Arts Learning Leader at Tom Baines Junior High and an International Baccalaureate Examiner. Her teaching experience includes teaching fine art to both junior and senior high students. Lily’s academic background includes a Bachelor’s of Education and a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts (majoring in Visual Arts) from the University of Calgary, and a Master’s of Arts in Leadership and Administration from Gonzaga University.

TANYA WAN LIM, Pianist & Vocal Coach. It was during her bachelor studies at the University of Alberta that Tanya Wan Lim first started working seriously with singers. Her previous experience accompanying high school musicals and city choirs soon evolved into collaborations with accomplished singers and professional choirs. These experiences led her to the role of choral director at the Montessori School of Music in Rome, while she earned her artist’s diploma in Piano Performance. After receiving her masters degree at the University of British Columbia, she spent time studying in Europe, achieving an artist’s diploma in Cologne, Germany. After a 10-year hiatus from Alberta, Tanya moved to Calgary in 2007. Tanya currently works as a performer, composer, teacher and accompanist.

NADINE CIRANKEWITCH, Assistant Director & Stage Manager, is a former student of CASSA Musical Theatre Showtime and has always had a passion for theatre. She has completed an Acting Diploma at Mount Royal College and appeared in various plays such as West Side Story, Blood Relations and Jennie’s Story. She also has a passion for stage combat and had the opportunity to work with Cirque Du Soleil. She is currently working on her Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Dramatic Arts and a Bachelor of Education at the University of Lethbridge. Nadine enjoys travelling and has been as far as New Zealand and India. Future plans involve teaching and bringing the joy of theatre to children in third world countries who do not have a program such as CASSA.

CANDACE COLLIN, Assistant Teacher, currently teaches with the Calgary Board of Education as the band and choral director at James Fowler High School. Prior to her teaching career, she completed her education (B. Mus., University of Calgary and B. Ed., University of Victoria) along with a Drama minor, making her well suited to direct a musical theatre course to debut at James Fowler this upcoming year. Candace’s past experience includes music direction and original composition for theatre: Lionel: The Miracle Man and Street of Crocodiles (Phoenix Theatre, UVIC); and Grimm Tales (ITSAZOO Productions, BC). She has also been the Assistant Director/Stage Manager for Bye Bye Birdie (Lester B. Pearson High School) and Pompadours and Poodle Skirts (CASSA), as well as performing as a CASSA alumni.
