School Magazine

BriefFor my preliminary task I had to create a

front cover and a contents page for a school magazine. The front cover is a long shot of a student and the contents page was mid shot. Making the school magazine was practice for my music magazine, by making this magazine I was able to know what works well and what doesn’t on a magazine. I now have a clearer understanding of what I need to include in my music magazine in order to target my audience better.

We have our central image of a school girl dress in uniform. She makes direct eye contact which tells me she is not shy.

We have puffs around the image to tell us what is in the magazine. The magazine talks about how there GCSE results are the best.

I would suggest the target audience is teenagers and parents. The language code is very formalThe headline ‘new to school’ gives teenagers and parents guidance on how to cope at being in a new school.

The magazine also offers guidance about ‘teenage stress’ which a lot of teenagers could maybe relate to and learn from.

The red stands out because it a dark colour on a bright magazine

We have puffs on one side of the image to tell us what is in the magazine.Head boy is in capital letters which could infer that this magazine is about the head boy and the image on the right is the head boy.

Long shirt with a tie signifies that this boy is a student and supports the idea of a school magazine

The background has a glass block which looks professional and a working environment

There is a image of teacher and this is supported by the heading ‘ teacher wins a car’

I would say the target audience is teenagers as it is not well presented to be a magazine for parents to read

Magazine name is called ‘welcome’ The colour used is only black which suggest that whoever made the magazine did not put much effort into making the title eye catching for the reader. The

background is a brick which tells me that the girl could be in the playground

The use of the colour purple gives the magazine that cutting edge. The use of purple would appeal to girls than boys.

The target audience is teenagers because the language code is informal for parents to read.

There are puffs around the image to tell us what is in the magazine.

One heading says ‘ big breast gets you far’ this is shocking and therefore will catch the readers attention.

AS Media Studies Preliminary Task – School Magazine Front Page Proposal Form

Target audience: (age range, interests)Although it is a school newsletter you still have to think about your audience and how to appeal to them.

The audience will range from 11-18 years old, being the students of the school as well as potential students. However, the magazine would also be suitable for the parents to read in order for them to have more information about the school and what’s going on at the school. However, the students of the school are a priority. In order to appeal to this range of audience, the magazine should include colourful images and not be mainly text based as it can easily becoming boring to the eye and thus my target audience wouldn’t be interested in reading the magazine.

Possible title ideas: (masthead / title block)What is your magazine going to be called?

Straight outta BD

Main image:What will be the focal point of your front page, remember, your work “must include a photograph of a student in a medium close-up”

Main cover line:What will be the main story?

Previous exam results, GCSE and A 'Level

Additional key images:What other images will be on your front cover?Remember, it is a school magazine.

None

Additional cover lines:Other features, stories or selling points which will be inside the magazine, these need to be audience appropriate.

Debate mate and work experience

Typography: (style, size, colour of copy)Think about the writing and the style of the writing on your front page.

size 12 for general text40 for mastheadSize 16 for main stories and secondary stories

Background colour/image:What will be in the background, remember you don’t want to take the focus away from the main image.

Background will be white or the background of a classroom that the student is working in to show the school environment

Technical considerations:(equipment, setting, props, costume, lighting)Be realistic and creative, think about what you have access to and how you could use it.

Props I may include are a text book, table, pen and an exercise book for the main cover, to show that the student is working, and pieces of paper for the photo of students with their results.Lighting will be natural, people included will be in sixth form attire. The setting will vary from being in a classroom to being outside to show a variety of the school.

What have I learnt? After making my school ,magazine I learnt

how to use pic monkey in order to give affect my image, I also learnt how to develop my skill in Microsoft word for my contents page. The key thing I learnt was what works well on a magazine and what doesn’t, e.g. choosing whether to use a medium shot for my front cover or a long shot and how different shots have different effects on your target audience.
