Abri PataudThe archaeological site of the Abri
Pataud
is known
since the XIXe
century. First big excavation took place in the 1950’s and was conducted by H.L.
Movius. The site was leaved out at the end of the Movius’s
work and some rescue excavations had
been performed in the last 1980’s..
Since 2005, new excavation program is implemented under the direction of
Roland Nespoulet
and Laurent Chiotti
in order to re‐examine the humans remains of the Final Gravettian
period in the site
and Movius’s
collection
-
Abri PataudThe site of The Abri
Pataud
is really important because:
Sequence de ref All the level from the Aurignacian
to the Solutrean
are represented, 14 archaeological levels.
Some rock art and sculpture have been found. Human remains associated with beads have been discovered in Final Gravettian
layer 2. The
excavation is justified with this association .
The museum has been inaugurated in 1990, and is
located in the decorated part of the rock sheltered. All the
artifacts presented in the museum come from the
excavation of the site of Pataud.
-
Musée National de préhistoireCreated and officially open in 1923, the museum had been placed under the responsibility of Denis Peyrony in 1929. Nowadays, Jean-Jacques Cleyet-Merle is the curator since 1988.
After the evocation of the earliest hominids, the stratigraphic stair brings us to the collections and showcase.
-
Musée National de préhistoireThe scenography developed on the first floor is the methodological and the chronological framework. Then on the second floor, visitors can follow their ancestors’ way from the collect of raw material to the inmost depths of painted caves.
All the artifacts presented come from the regional excavations, and cover all the period between the Mousterian to the Upper Palaeolithic. With an opening to the beginning of the Neolithic.

This case study of a Pleistocene site in Roma deals with the constrains of the installation of a museum in a urban area. It was also showed the future perspectives
towards community integration and new didactic technologies (didactic movie and Pleistostation
videogame). At the same time was also demonstrated the value that
new technologies, such as thematic movies and a didactic videogame could have as a prominent tool that allows a better understanding of prehistory.

some
data
about
the
controversial
issue
of
the
“out
of
Africa”,
focusing
on
who?
When?
And
why?
this
event
happened. The
conference
is
focus
on
the
importance
of
Georgian sites, specifically the case of Dmanisi.
Georgia has
a
great
potential
to
be
the
key
way
of
humans
out
of
Africa
as
well
as
the
human
evolution.
One
of
the
main
discovery
recorded
in
this
country
is
the
Blumenbach
skull,
this
has
become
the
prototype
of
the
Caucasian
race.
The
reason
for
it
is
that
during
the
XVII‐XIX
centuries
Johann
Friedrich
Blumenbach
said
that
this
skeleton
was
the
prototype
of
“white
race”
thus
from
there
forward
this
was
considered the Caucasian race for all the occidental humans.
It also an important point of the speech the called “Golden fleece story”
linked with the history of
the
discover
of
Dmanisi
which
has
made
that
Georgia
has
a
great
importance
in
the
scientific
world.
In
1991 a robust and archaic mandible was found but is is
very difficult to build a theory just from a mandible.
After that the scientists found the skull of a teenager which has been very helpful in order to study the age
of
fossils
thus
this
is
a
very
informative
fossil.
According
to
this
data
there
is
a
great
morphological
variability
among
the
fossils
found
in
Dmanisi
but
we
have
to
take
into
account
what
kind
of
differences
are we talking about and what is the meaning of this.
Moreover
attending
to
the
topic
of
the
IP
congress
the
managers
of
the
site
developed
and
advertisement program which includes visitors watching archaeologist while they are working and as well
as a children amusement and educating program called “Sesame street”.

ATAPUERCA & ORCE: HERITAGE TO BE PRESERVED

Robert Sala
In Spain there are two of the main sites in Europe for the world
archaeological
heritage: Atapuerca
(Burgos) and Orce
(Granada). In The site of Atapuerca
we can find
the first records of nutritional cannibalism in Gran Dolina
as well as a perfect
preservation of the main group of Homo heildebergensis
in Sima
de los Huesos
where
the archaeologist also found one single biface
“Excalibur”. These fact allow to the
scholars to talk about the first manifestations of symbolic behavior. The specific case of Orce
in the Guadix‐Baza
basin give us a clear
representation of the palaeoenvironmental
data thanks to a high amount of
faunistical
remains found in the site. Moreover it has been registered one of the first
evidences of human presence 1.3 Ma ago. This data it has been establish from lithic
artifacts which belong to an industry mode 1 without retouch. These sites give us the
possibility of reconstruct the picture of our ancestors and their behavior thus that is
the reason why we should preserve them.

Marta Arzarello
This conference it,s
been presented by Arzarello, M. and it is focused on the Italian site
Pirro
Nord ( Apicena, Foggia). The main problematic is the localization of the site which is
in a quarry currently worked by the local population. Thus this work reports a lot of
founds to the village. It is necessary to be very fast in the workshop thus this implies an exhaustive
documentation of the archaeological records as well as the GIS even if it is a secondary
aim. The faunistical
record in Pirro
Nord is from the Villafranquian
period and it has great
similarities with Venta
Micena
(Orce, Spain). The site has been dated around 1.5‐1.7 Ma.
The palaeomagnetism
is more difficult to precise due to the features of the site and the
archaeologist did not find any pollen record. The exploitation of the local raw materials is opportunistic and
there is preference for the
unipolar
centripetal debitage
of the cores (short size). The reduction sequences are small
for the production of triangular flakes in general. The conservation and diffusion have been based on the relationships with the local
population. During the excavation the archaeologists expose some
conferences into the
village and as well a musealization
project. The web site has two main parts clearly
differentiated: one scientific part and another focus on the diffusion.

on
the

and
the
formation
of
scholars

The author makes and introduction to the museum depicting the natural
surroundings and its historical heritage as well as its touristic potential.
The purpose of the museum is to show the importance of
prehistory and try to get the valorization of this period in comparison
with the others. One more purpose is to bring light up the surrounding
environment. The permanent exposition was opened in 2009 and it shows
Homo neanderthalensis
as well as Homo sapiens within its habitats. The
museum takes in account a central room dedicated to the feminist
with
representations of Venus
and some artifacts with phallic shape.
Moreover this shows a sounds room where some flutes notes are played
and one more room with masks. The museum pretend to focus on promotion like oriented to normal

Atapuerca
its been considered as well as an archaeological site a center
for the knowledge and the promotion. Since 2006 the number of visits
was increasing and the most striking thing is that those visits are mainly
cultural tourism but not experts in the matter. The secret of the success
of Atapuerca
is to combine the archaeological tourism with the cultural
tourism together with the tourism in Burgos city. It has also been built an
archaeological park where there is no one site but the students can do
some experimentation in archeology as well as some other archaeological
activities. In the other hand there is a problem with the financial
supporting for which reason this center is closed to the public, this would
be an interpretation center and is localized in Ibeas

A decorative cave is a complex object and can be considered as a monument. From this point of view it must be protected by law as an historical monument.
A decorative cave is-an element of the natural landscapes-an archaeological site-a monumentLascaux cave is one of an important decorated cave in Europe that
attract attention of scientists as well as people who are interested in art and caves.
The cave was discovered in 1940 in September 12 by four teenagers and authenticated the excavation by Henri Breui during the same year.
The main approach to save and protect this kind of caves is to limit public visit that can be a source of damage and should be protected as fragile object of our heritage considering all important characteristics of cave inner and external environment.

AND TAUTAVEL
Anne‐Marie Moigne
The Caune de l’Aragó is well-stratified with clear division of levels. The archaeological record has been accumulated by anthropic and fluvial agents. The faunal remains show evidence of human activity. Raw materials are procured within the vicinity of 40km from the site. The record made it possible to identify the entire technological evolution of the lithic industry.
The Museum of Tautavel serves as the center for the conservation and dissemination of the site, as well as the interpretation center. Both are fundamental for the preservation of this complex, in addition to serving scholarly activities.

SYMBOLIC BEHAVIOUR AND PREHISTORIC ART
Denis Vialou
This lecture is about art expression and its symbolic interpretation through the human history. This symbolism is found over the world with different artistic manifestations: faunal representations, human figures, the importance of sexuality and signs.
After the talk, there was a debate whether it is correct to look for a symbolic interpretation for the prehistoric art when we are so far away from their thoughts. But, although we can’t understand the meaning of these expressions, all of them have a symbolic sense.

Researchers used experimental archaeology to identify errors made when learning how to flint‐knap.
When applied to the archaeological record, researchers discovered that modern and ancient knapping errors are basically the same. Researchers discovered that the same
types of errors appear everywhere, but also that skill is more important than raw material when knapping correctly.

Objects such as pigment, a device used to prepare pigment, lithics, a lamp, antler, and bones used to paint the rock were found.

roles played by individuals in a community, as well as questions
of people, the psyche, and the relationship between people and their objects.
Mr. Mohen

In his presentation, Mr. Widianto
described the UNESCO site of Sangiran

period from 1.5 mya
BP to 50 ka BP. He also described how this site is subject to special conservation problems because the site is extremely large and has a local population that lives within it. To deal with these special problems, researchers
involve the local people by rewarding them for fossil discoveries, educating them on the importance of the site, and enlisting them to help conserve it.

HUMAN EVOLUTION SITES IN SouthEast
ASIA BEHAVIOUR, ORIGINS & DEVELOPMENT.

Mr. Dizon
summarized the current archaeological work being done in the Phillipines, which is a newer region of research and can potentially answer many questions
concerning mainly migration patterns into the islands and the general prehistory of the island. The earliest evidence of prehistory is a metatarsal of Homo (its
exact species is still unsure) at Callao Cave, dating to 66.7ka BP. Other sites span much of prehistory, including 47‐20ka BP human remains at Tabon
Cave, as well
as a typical Neolithic site at Torongan
Cave, all the way up through the metal age.

he Mousterian industry was named after the discovery of this site, which dates mostly from its ccupation by Neanderthal man. Two burials sites were discovered
here. The Paleolithic site was
resented by a guide, compounds the history of investigations and explained the description of e stratigraphic
sequence.
Was developed a discussion about some topics (datations, materials, conservation and reservation, and possible future works on the site); being a little long and with too much
formation repeated. The host at the site is not pleasant and it is difficult for large groups the erception of the site.

Dordogne, France
Lascaux II is a cast of the original cave this one is not the only one but
the first that was made. This cast has all the paintings that the original one has
and it has been made in a real cave in order to reproduce the environment of
the original Lascaux with this aim the cave was modeled as similar as possible
to the original. The reason of the creation of this cast is the deterioration of the
paintings of Lascaux that currently is a huge problem to its conservation and
the scientists are hard working on it. The main reason for its deterioration was
the opening of the cave to the general public what caused the change of the
natural conditions inside the cave giving place to the increasing of the
carbonate dioxide which is very dangerous for the rock art.
Lascaux II was open in 1983, the entrance is a small museum with
some
of the more striking paintings which work as an introduction to the next room
which is the proper cave. It has all the paintings and engraved from the real
Lascaux but the structure can differ from the original due to the use of a real
cave as support.

LE REGOURDOU
Regourdou is a site discovered on March 1954 by the owner of the place, Roger Constant. It is a private site where they found a Neanderthal burial related with bear remains. The skeleton was found without the skull. The archaeologists who found it think that it could be a new type of funerary ritual made by Neanderthals 80.000 years ago.
Because of its chronology and its remains, it is a site in discussion and there were no publications about the burial. There is no stratigraphy preserved. This type of ritual is not typical at a very early age, and there are so many things in debate. There are also some bears that the owner bought to show visitors.

-
In the north of Perigord
we have almost nine sites where was discovered portable art objects and examples of rock art.
One of them is the Rochereil
Cave, probably the most representative. Here was founded lithic
instruments, animal bones and a lot of decorated objects (255).
The
decoration recurs above all over bones and between them there are a lot of geometric representations but also animals, few schematic women figures, probably
some kind of plants and fantastic images. Another ones is the Teyjat
cave where some artistic draws, made over stalagmites
supports, were discovered at the entrance. The cave is open for the public and here, even if there are some problem of conservation, it’s possible to see some examples of rock art.
One of the best methods to document engraves and pictures it seems to be the photogrammetry's
ones.

materials that come from
the most important sites in the Perigord

by Peyrony. The conditions of temperature and humidity in the two rooms that we’ve seen, are strictly controlled in order to preserve
all materials, expecially
bones. There is free access for all the researchers who need to see the collections for comparison or study

One of the problems of the National Museum of Prehistory at Les Eyzies
it was to made an inventory of all the collections (about 6 millions objects). The first system founded for this task, elaborated in 2007, unfortunately had some problems: after
almost two years only the
5,5% of the work was finished. It was in 2010 that a new processes, accepted by Ministry of Culture, was created. With this
new ones is not counted every object, but only the containers are checked (excepted for objects in displays). In this way there is an advantage in efficiency (x 10) even if not all the
material is looked.

-
Collections are useful for many reasons: for the research, for public exhibitions and as a support for teaching and
expertise, and it’s for this reason that the Natural History Museum of Paris has a long and active tradition of
exchanges, loans, and scientific visits for comparative purposes.
Of course there are rules for research loans to use collections without problems of conservations or more
“ethic”
problems. The MNHN is also involved in “Synthesis”: a web project
created on line to share informations
about collections from several European museums.

“

was
that
we

• It was founded and excaved in 1863 by E. Lartet;• Dating with thermoluminiscence yielding the date about 24.000‐15.000 ya for
the solutrean and magdalenian levels;• In 1865 there is the first pubblication about the upper part, the solutrean
levels and the magdalenian level;• Last excavation was in 1995 and since it is open to public and researchers. • The rock shelter included in the world heritage list because it
is one of the
most important site that have the most complete stratigpahy to understand the evolution of upper Palaeolithic (Perigordien to Magdalenian).
• The site is well known for its tools that is not only efficient
but also have the aesthetical value.
• Solutrian layer comprises of lithic industry with pressure technique and bone industry; Magdalenian layer contained blades armature, preparation of bone tools, bone harpoons, rock arts.

• Activity of research and diffusion in the museum. Museum is acquisition and collection, talks more about today and the valorization
of the museum.• Collection could give lots of information and discoveries. Example is
the most complete baby Neanderthal from the Mousterian that is discovered after it being collected in the museum. Student found
complete engraving of horse on bones came out from museum collection.
• New technology: better analysis methods applied in old collections such as lithics
or fauna able to yield more new information and
discoveries and often change the course on how we view on a theory. • Classical type of valorization is researchers publication but very limited
impact on general public. Museums necessary to give information to all type of public, better way is temporary exhibition.
• Permanent exhibition also good tool for diffusion of our knowledge.• Necessary that the researchers implicate in the teaching. Important
museum have good relation with university because could give good subjects to students and allow for further valorization.

Paillet; E. Man-Estier; E. Robert In the north of Perigord we have almost nine sites where was discovered portable art objects and examples of rock art. One of them is the Rochereil Cave, probably the most representative. Here was founded lithic instruments, animal bones and a lot of decorated objects (255). The decoration recurs above all over bones and between them there are a lot of geometric representations but also animals, few schematic women figures, probably some kind of plants and fantastic images. Another ones is the Teyjat cave where some artistic draws, made over stalagmites supports, were discovered at the entrance. The cave is open for the public and here, even if there are some problem of conservation, it’s possible to see some examples of rock art. One of the best methods to document engraves and pictures it seems to be the photogrammetry's ones.Diapositive numéro 86Pratical activity at Abrì PataudDiapositive numéro 88Diapositive numéro 89Diapositive numéro 90“Inventory 6 millions objects before June 2014 a problem”A.
