Pregnancy And Common Cold
“When pregnant, the effects of a common cold or flu can be more severe and also last much longer. If not treated on time, it can lead to other health problems for the mother and child.” - Dr. Poornima Ramakrishna, MBBS, MS (Mumbai)
When winter strikes, even normal healthy people tend to fall victim to the common cold. It is the most
common ailment that affects us all and dealing with it can be quite cumbersome. When pregnant, the
effects of a common cold or flu can be more severe and also last much longer. When a woman gets
pregnant, her immune system changes completely and this makes her an easy target to a cold or a
cough which can leave her fatigued.
A cold or flu does not really have any effect on the baby but it is important to take measures to avoid
getting a cold or to treat it when you are pregnant as it can also lead to pneumonia as well. Some of the
best ways to avoid getting a cold are:
Maintain a healthy lifestyle
Get enough sleep
Eat nutritious food
Exercise regularly
Take prenatal vitamins
Wash hands regularly
If you already contracted a cold, treat it by:
Drinking plenty of fluids.
Get enough rest by taking naps when necessary.
Eat small meals if you are not able to consume large meals.
Avoid any form of medication unless prescribed by a doctor. Opt for natural remedies like salt in
warm water and hot tea.
Turn on the heat.
Don’t come in contact with others infected with flu.
Take vitamin C in some form.
When the cold or cough continues even after taking all the necessary remedies, it is time to visit your
doctor, especially if it is preventing you from eating or sleeping. Talk to our team of experts at Apollo
Cradle, to know about the best ways to recover from a cold when pregnant.
