Maths Lesson

Exploring right angles

1. Mark in the internal angles of these two-dimensional shapes. The first one has

been done for you.

Did you notice the internal angles in the square are different to the internal angles of the

other two shapes? The internal angles of the square are right angles. Let’s learn more

about right angles.

2. Stand with both your arm held together above your head. Turn one arm clockwise

for a quarter turn. The position of your arms should look like this:

Page 9: Prefixes ‘un’, ‘re’, ‘dis’ and ‘mis’

You have just formed a right angle with your arms. A quarter turn with one of your arms

forms a right angle. A quarter turn is also known as a right angle.

3. List three examples of right angles you can see in your home.

Construct and label right angles

4. Make a right-angle tester or finder by folding a piece of paper in half and then half

again.

5. Check that the three angles you found in your home from exercise 3 are right

angles by using the right-angle tester or finder. Place the corner of the tester near

or over the corner of the object.

6. Explain how you know the angles you found were right angles.

7. Angles can be less than a right angle, equal to a right angle or greater than a

right angle. Use your right-angle tester to describe each angle highlighted on the

following images.

Put your right-angle tester in a safe place, as you will need it for tomorrow’s

lesson.

Art: Patterns and symbols in desert peoples’ painting

Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples use symbols in some artworks to represent

people, places and activities. By learning the meaning of some symbols, we can understand the

stories the artworks tell.

These symbols are used by some artists to represent the tracks of animals.

What is similar and different about the tracks of the emu and the tracks of the kangaroo?

Both symbols use the footprint of each animal to represent them. They have different-shaped feet

so the symbols are different shapes. The kangaroo track includes a line to show the mark made by its

tail dragging along the ground.

Look at the following Artworks and answer the questions.

The bush melon is a sweet fruit which grows on a small bush found in Minnie Pwerle’s Country,

Atnwengerrp. The women collect the fruit in summer and eat the small black seeds as they harvest

the fruit. The melon is broken up and dried to eat later.

This painting is called Bush Melon Seeds.

1. Describe the shapes and colours in the pattern.

2. How does the pattern represent the seeds of the bush melon?

This painting by Nancy Ross Nungurrayi is like a map, representing the artist’s Country from above.

1. How many different patterns can you see in this painting? Use this key to identify what the

patterns might represent.

2. What symbols could you create to represent your school?

3. Create some symbols of your own to represent some important places in your local

environment.
