ITHEMBA TRUSTThe iThemba Trust derives its name from the isiXhosa word meaning 'hope'. Preferred Safaris & Adventures share in the renewal of this hope by sponsoring a child's educa-tion at Plum Line School in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The educational sponsorship programme provides an opportunity to fund the education of underprivileged and previously disadvantaged children. More than simply receiving funding to facilitate their education, these children have in a sense been ‘adopted’ on an educational level by their respective sponsors, who have enjoyed a great sense of involvement in these children’s lives as they have tracked their progress and built relationships with them. www.ithemba4hope.org

UTHANDOPreferred Safaris & Adventure supports Uthando (meaning ‘love’) South Africa, a nonprofit organisation and Responsible Tourism initiative based in Cape Town. In turn, Uthando supports a broad range of community-based, sustainable and innovative social-development programmes. Funding and other forms of assistance come primarily through the tourism industry. In addition, Uthando offers unique and tailor-made daily scheduled tours and private

ELS FOR AUTISM GOLF CHALLENGEEvery once in a while a cause resonates so profoundly that one needs to take action. Preferred Safaris & Adventures are proud to be part of such a cause as a contributing sponsor to the Els For Autism Golf Challenge to help raise money for the Els for Autism Foundation. The Els for Autism Foundation was established in 2009 by Ernie and Liezl Els and has since embarked on a catalytic philanthropic project – The Els Centre of Excellence. The Foundation has launched a capital campaign to raise $30 million to finance the facility. It will focus on a global digital learning platform that will give children around the world access to best practices in education and therapy. It will also help connect the international autism community with best practices and the very latest information and research. This first of its kind Centre will also have an on-site education facility, medical and professional services, research and transition to adulthood initiatives.www.e4agolf.com

M ozambique, with its diverse history, is home to a fascinating blend of Arab traders, descendents of Portuguese

colonialists and various African groups including North African tribal peoples. Although there are as many as 17 ethnic languages spoken in this culturally rich destination, Portuguese is the official language of the country. Dip into the outstanding seafood on offer including the famous Mozambiquan prawns, they are usually served with peri-peri sauce and enjoyed with a local beer and are addictive!

Most of the country’s attractions are located

along the coastline or tucked away on islands such as those of the unique Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos. The snorkelling and diving experiences on offer in these unspoilt, beautiful waters with their extensive coral reefs are world-renowned. More than 1 200 species of fish have been identified in the coastal waters off of Mozambique. The subtropical to tropical climate of the country is caused by the warm Indian Ocean current flowing south from the Equator and the altitude of the Mozambiquan Plateau. The temperatures increase as you move further north up the coastline.

ZAMBIAthe spectacular falls, the might Zambezi & world-class national game parks

T he Zambezi River crashes 100m into a chasm stretching 1,7km in length to create one of the world’s most

spectacular waterfalls – Victoria Falls or as the locals call it, ‘the smoke that thunders’! A unique destination, Victoria Falls has been declared a World Heritage Site. Here, you can pass over the Falls in light aircraft, helicopters and parachutes, bungee-jump off the bridge or go whitewater rafting.

The wildlife of Zambia is a major drawcard to the country. If time is tight, spend an after-noon at the nearby Zambezi or Mosi-oa-Tunya

National Parks where you can experience some of the thrill of an African safari. Nearby is Botswana’s Chobe National Park offering a good mix of land- and water-based game-viewing.

Be a true explorer in the more remote parts of the country by visiting the Lower Zambezi and Kafue National Parks and the beautiful South Luangwa National Park. All of them are accessible by light aircraft and offer diverse landscapes from plains to wetlands that are sprinkled with lakes and islands.

T his magnificent country is home to the world’s largest inland river delta, the Okavango; the earth’s most

impressive saltpan, the Makgadikgadi and the largest continuous stretch of sand on the planet, the Kalahari Desert. With nearly a fifth of the country protected in National Parks, Botswana has made this substantial commitment to conservation its most important drawcard.

The Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve teem with wildlife. Camps situated within the floodplain concentrate on water-

based activities such as mokoro (canoe) expeditions, while camps in drier areas focus on game drives and bush walks.

Makgadikgadi is a vast wilderness of saltpans, where species such as the meerkat and brown hyena can be spotted. The diverse Chobe National Park is home to the greatest concentration of game in southern Africa as well as vast herds of elephant. Experience one of the world’s last remaining wilderness areas that is still in the same state as when the early explorers discovered it. Botswana is an extraordinary African safari destination.

N amibia is a country of contrasting landscapes from the oldest desert on earth, predator-rich game

reserves and rugged mountain ranges to modern cities and coastal resort towns. Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city and gateway to the region, has an international airport and a host of visitor-friendly facilities. Swakopmund, on the northwest coast, is a premier holiday destination and the ideal base from which to explore the Namib Desert. Sea kayaking, paragliding and sandboarding are all popular activities in this eclectic town.

No trip to southern Namibia is complete without visiting the awe-inspiring Fish River Canyon; the impressive quivertree forest; the majestic red dunes of Sossusvlei and the exquisite mountain ranges of the Richtersveld. In the north, Etosha National Park is not to be missed: it is home to hundreds of species including large elephant and lion populations that all gather around the vast saltpan, Etosha. The unforgiving Skeleton Coast, called the ‘coast of hell’ by Portuguese seafarers, never fails to impress with its dramatic vistas and haunting sites of shipwrecks.

T he East African countries of Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania offer an alluring combination of safari and beach

vacations. You will gain fascinating insights into the local history and culture from both.

Kenya is the birthplace of the safari vacation and highlight destinations include the Masai Mara, Tsavo, Amboseli and Lake Nakuru National Parks. A once-in-a-lifetime sight is the annual wildlife migration between Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara. This awesome spectacle only takes place when the rains fall so the dates can be unpredictable.

Many tented camps move around so as to catch the migration.

Rwanda, of course, is famous for its gorillas and the unique opportunity to go chimpanzee trekking.

Visitors are drawn to Tanzania with its Great Rift Valley, the vast volcanic bowl of the Ngorongoro Crater, snow-covered Mount Kilimanjaro, tree-climbing lions and the flamingos of Lake Manyara as well as the beach culture of Zanzibar with its beautiful coral reefs. Combine the experience of both worlds on a trip to this fascinating country.

High Atlas Mountains and semi-desert interior, has long been a destination of choice for film stars, romantics and adventurers.

I f you are looking to add depth and rich-ness to your African vacation experience then consider our conservation and

‘voluntourism’ packages. These enable you to not only enjoy an authentic African experience – the landscapes, wildlife, culture and people – but also to gain something extra from your luxury vacation.

It is said that to give is to receive and by choosing our select destinations and ‘voluntourism’ projects you will leave richer than when you arrived. There are many ways in which you can contribute to building the African continent and enrich lives and create hope, dreams and possibilities for present and future generations. Volunteer opportunities fall within two camps: social justice that primarily involves the upliftment of impover-ished communities by participating in social community projects and nature conservation.

If you are a nature lover our wildlife reserves, game parks and world heritage sites offer you the option to indulge in a luxurious travel experience at the same time as engaging

in a worthwhile pursuit. Wildlife sanctuaries such as these offer safe breeding grounds for endangered species and you can interact with and work alongside researchers and conservationists on these projects.

For those interested in marine conservation, get up close with South Africa’s shark populations, kayak across the calm waters of the Indian Ocean with hundreds of dolphins swimming alongside, interact with our resident African penguins in the Cape and glory in the sight of beautiful Southern right whales that breach the water’s surface only meters from the research boat you will be standing on.

Play a hands-on role in the long-term conservation of African wildlife, enjoy first-class wildlife viewing and the game reserve lifestyle when choosing to be part of a wildlife research team. By choosing to stay at one of the allied lodges and reserves you are making an invaluable contribution.

This can make all the difference to an orphaned child, an animal in need or a family without a roof over their heads. All of the projects that we have identified deliver tangible benefits to the community and give volunteers an incredible experience at the same time.

Taking a gap year? This is no longer an option restricted to students; Preferred Safaris & Adventures offers a number of unique conservation and community gap year projects

A frica is home to three vast deserts that encompass a diverse range of unique attractions certain to stir both your

senses and your soul. In Southern Africa the Kalahari Desert

covers much of Botswana and Namibia and its 900,000sq kms awaits your exploration. Get out into the pure air and pristine environment of the Kalahari on quad bike or 4x4 excursions for an extreme desert experience. Sleep out under the African stars to experience the full depth of the silence and sense of solitude that is on offer here.

Above the Kalahari is the notorious Namib Desert, home to what is claimed are the highest sand dunes in the world and edging onto a coastline that has earned its reputation of Skeleton Coast. Unusual creatures abound, the dunes shift shape as the wind blows through the desert and one of the most extraordinary sights is watching the sun go down and the

colours of the dunes reflect the shifting shades of colours. The flora of the region is diverse, hardy and yet beautiful despite the harsh surroundings it has had to learn to survive in.

Morocco is the doorway to the Sahara, the largest desert in the world that extends into Tunisia. As you look out onto the desert landscape, the cares and trappings of modern life drift away - fading into the soothing views of softly hued mountains and rolling dunes. Experience the wonder of the Sahara by a traditional camel ride or from the convenience of an all-terrain vehicle. As the sun begins to slip west, set up camp for an evening under the clearly seen stars.

All of them offer different experiences from the Star Dunes in the Namib, North Africa’s largest salt pan, Chott El Jerid and the fossil waterways of the Kalahari. The deserts of Africa are truly unusual and unique destina-tions that will leave a lasting impression.
