y family and I recently returned from our annual
getaway to Hawaii, always a long-awaited and
much-anticipated journey. This year, the word
'Journey" took on a new meaning: we flew with
Cole, our lS-month-old son, a challenging age when it comes to air
travel. In an instant, flights went from being a peaceful experience
of magazine reading and quiet conternplation to a traveling circus.
These days, rather than magazines, an iPod, and a laptop, my
carry-on is filled with toys, snacks, and other various diversions
designed to occupy a toddler's fleeting interest.
Without question, I took travel for granted prior to the birth of
my son. Each trip, whether for business or pleasure, offered the
opportunity for personal growth, submersion into a new culture,
and limitless indulgence in the local cuisine, customs, and daily
life. Before, my husband and I enjoyed trips filled with meetings or
sightseeing followed by long, delicious dinners alone, or with friends
or colleagues, followed perhaps by a nightcap or two to wrap up the
day. Now, we have to consider Cole's needs, interests, and stamina
into our travel plans and daily activities. Ald on some days, and
unfortunately, on some flights, chaos rules.
Some things, however, remain the same. Before each trip,
I still spend hours online researching local haunts; I still
develop that giddiness just before boarding the plane; and I
still pack too many pairs of shoes. Now, my online research is
WELCOME
focused on seeking child-friendly attractions, and that old familiar
excitement grows because I know I will share new experiences
with my son. Opportunities for personal growth come from the joy
in watching his.
I suppose there is still no excuse for the extra shoes.
Whether you're booking a holiday for two or planning your
next family getaway, this issue of Preferred Lifestyles offers a
range of options for all. Life in the Fast Lane highlights the
fast-paced and glamorous world of Formula 1, with locations in
almost every major destination across the globe. Foodies will love
Farm to Fork, a feature on the sustainable food movement that
has transformed the way we think about what is on our plates.
And those interested in spending time in South America's most
diverse country will love Paradise Found, a guide to Brazil,
a spectacular destination filled with options for every category
of travel.
Whether your trip is peaceful and reflective or chaotic and full of
joyous discoveries, I hope you travel well.
