PREFACE TO REV I SED HYM NAL .
I N presenting this Revised H ymnal the committee do not c laim that it isstrictly scie ntific, as they were ob l iged to select very large l y from hymns composed by those who were unacqu ainted w ith the teachings of Chr istian Science .Wh i le not entirely composed of hymns written exact ly in accordance w ith th edoctrines of Christian Science, it presents the acme of re l igious and poetic thoughtcontained in the best hymns of the day, as wel l as in th e best compos itions thusfar contributed by Christian Scientists .
M uch labor has been bestowed upon th is comp i lation by the Committee , andin the mus ical department of this work great cred it is due M r . Lyman Brackettof Boston , M ass , for un tiringeffort to present the most usefu l and varied col leet ion of tunes ever issued in one hymnal , the purpose being to appeal to everylover of chu rch mus ic, of whatever taste or abi l ity . Sp e cia l attention has been
given to the wedd ingof words and mus ic, not on ly as to character of compos ition ,but in respect to proper accentuation
,etc ., wherever it has been found poss ib le .
Th e Rev is ion of the Christian Science Hymna l has been made w ith a View toe l iminate the difficu ltie s wh ich many users of th e book have found in connectingthe proper words or sy l lab les of hymns W ith their corresponding notes in eitherof the three tunes as u sed in the former arrangement . To accomp l ish th is purpose it was decided to pub l ish a H ymna l
,in wh ich the words and the syllab les
sha l l appear beneath the notes to wh ich they are to be sung.
I n revis ingthe hymnal it was found impracticab le to use a l l the mus ic in theold Hymnal , as the new book wou ld comprise nearly 700 pages and th e costwou l d be large ly increased. I t has therefore been the aim of th e Committee toselect for th is H ymnal the mus ic that is th e best known and the most used .
I n every case the fir st hymn has been set to the fir st tune w ith the exceptionof No. 4 7. Th e second h ymn s have been se t either to th e secon d or the th ird

tunes to wh ich they have been former l y sungw ith the exceptions of hymns 12,16, 18, 34, 38, 48, 52 , 54, 58, 64 , 76, 82 , 90 , 106, 114, 118, wh ich have been set toother second or third tunes , for the reason that some of
“the second tunes old
German and Engl ish chora ls seem to find but l itt le favor w ith the general mod
ern taste, and some of the th ird tunes written for solos are not well adapted for
congregational s inging.
Th e tunes from 1 to 179 have been se lected especia l ly w ith a view to theiradaptabi l ity for congregational s inging. Some of the best known and favoritehymn s
,
“Abide w ith m e ,” “Onward , Christian So l d iers ,” Sti ll, sti l l w ith Thee,”
“Lead , k indly Light,” Shepherd , show m e how to go,” “O’

and are p laced in the latter part of the book . I n add ition to these hymns twoothers
, I need Thee every hour and I’m a p i lgrim and I

” have
been added at th e suggestion of the Re v. M ary Baker Eddy . There w i ll befound
