I. HEBREWS 1:1-4

1 A. Paul 1 says here that the One true God 2 was of such a disposition thatHe desired to speak to us 3 in spite of the separation between us that wascaused by our sin.

1. He communications with us very gauged in that He speaks to us inmeasured statements. 4

2. We see this in that 5 His expressions are so varied. 6 a. There was in this a profound sense of consistency in that He spoke

by means of 7 those men who were patriarchs of faith in God and were committedto the Lord in very foundational ways. 8

b. He also spoke through those people who understood and accuratelycommunicated God’s reactions to a disobedient people claiming to be followersof His will and way. 9

2 B. We see all through this process God’s deep desire to communicate withus. Yet the most profound form of communications 10 came when all other formshad run 11 their 12 course. 13 It was at this time that He revealed Himself in theclearest and most declarative manner. For He spoke 14 to us 15 by means of theappearing and revelation 16 of His Son. 17

1 It is probable that Hebrews is Paul’s messages recorded by Apollos.2 The o Nominative noun qeo,j (masc sing), God; god; f goddess.3 Aorist active participle lalh, saj (nom masc sing), speak; proclaim; tell; converse; promise.4 Adverb pa,lai long ago; formerly.5 Copulative coordinating conjunction kai, and, also, but, even; that is, namely.6 Adverb polutro, pwj in many ways.7 Dative preposition evn in, on, at; near, by, before; among, within; by, with.8 The toi/j Dative noun patra, sin (masc pl), father (noted person); Father (of God); forefather.9 The toi/j Dative noun profh, taij (masc pl), prophet (seeing God’s will, inspired utterance).10 Genitive preposition evpi, on, upon; over; at; before; when, under, at the time of.11 Genitive adjective evsca, tou (neut sing), last, final; lowest, most insignificant.12 Demonstrative adjectival pronoun tou,twn (gen fem pl), this, this one; he, she, it.13 The tw/n Genitive noun hmerw/n (fem pl), day; time; legal day.14 Aorist active indicative evla, lhsen (3rd per sing), speak; proclaim; tell; address, converse; promise.15 Dative pronoun umi/n (2nd per pl), you.16 Dative preposition evn in, on, at; near, by, before; among, within; by, with.17 Dative noun uiw/| (masc sing), son; descendant; having a special relationship or likeness; disciple.

1. We know Jesus Christ to be God’s Son in that He possesses a likenessof God’s life and character. At the same time He is equal to God.

2. Therefore, because of the true stature of Jesus Christ, God Himself, 1 ina clear, and aggressive manner declared the truth about the Lord Jesus all throughHis earthly ministry. 2

3. The truth is that Jesus Christ is the revelation of God in human form. a. From one perspective He has all 3 the rights and privileges that

properly belong to God Himself. 4 b. It is not that Jesus Christ took to Himself such a stature in that the

stature was His all along. 1) For Jesus is the Christ, the very Son of God or Word of God

who 5 was an active and necessary component 6 in creation itself. 2) That is, 7 it was with the active participation of the Word or Son

of God that all of the contents of this 8 present age present life 9 were cause tocome into existence 10 in their original form. 11

3 C. All of this is based on the fact of who 12 Jesus Christ is 13 in regards toHis Divine nature.

1. A proper description of the Lord sees Him as bearing the verybrightness and radiance 14 of the glory and splendor, 15 of God.

1 Relative pronoun o[n (acc masc sing), who, which, what, that; he, she.2 Aorist active indicative e;qhken (3rd per sing), put, place, lay, set; lay down, give up; lay aside, store lip; make, appoint, destine; present, describe; lay aside, remove; serve.3 Genitive adjective pa,ntwn (masc pl), all; everyone, everything.4 Accusative noun klhrono, mon (masc sing), one receiving what God promised to his people; heir.5 Relative pronoun ou- (gen masc sing (no antecedent), who, which, what, that; he, she.6 Genitive preposition diV through, by means of, with; during, throughout; among.7 Adverb Kai, (normal use) and, also, but, even; that is, namely.8 Article - definite tou.j (acc masc pl), the; this, that; he, she, it.9 Accusative noun aivw/naj (masc pl), age; world order; eternity; Aeon (an evil force); present life.10 Aorist active indicative evpoi, hsen (3rd per sing), make, do, cause, effect, bring about, accomplish, perform, provide; create (of God); produce, yield, bear, put forth; give, prepare, keep, celebrate.11 It is important to note that God and Christ did not create sin which distorted everything.12 Relative pronoun o[j (nom masc sing), who, which, what, that; he, she.13 Present active participle w’n (nom masc sing), be, exist; take place; live; remain; come.14 Nominative noun avpau, gasma (neut sing), brightness, radiance.15 The th/j Genitive noun do,xhj (fem sing), glory, splendor; power, kingdom; praise, pride; honor;brightness, brilliance; revealed presence of God; heaven; glorious heavenly being.

2. This is to say that Jesus Christ, 1 as a person, 2 is the full expression orimage 3 of the essence 4 of God. 5

a. An example of this expression of Divinity is seen 6 in that withinHis nature is the power to carry, bear, guide, sustain or support 7 all of creation. 8

He does this by means of the supernatural power and strength 9 of His 10 word. 11 b. Another example of this expression of Divinity is seen in that within

His nature, life and character to be able in one effort 12 to cleanse 13 mankind ofsin. 14 And when this was accomplished, He took His seat 15 in the midst of 16

power and authority itself. 17 That is the One who is the Greatness and Majesty 18

in all of the 19 realms that are lifted up as the dwelling place of God. 20

4 D. As we consider the person of Jesus Christ we must understand who Heis within His life and character. We do not begin with His accomplishments. 1

1. As we identify the Lord we must limit our comparison to the angels ofGod to the fact they both He and the angels are messengers sent to mediate thepresence of God with us. 2 Yet this is where the parallel ends in that as we seewho the Lord is, we find that He is, in His life, character and stature, infinitely 3

superior 4 to any and all of the angels. 2. From the beginning it has been known that the nature and character of

Jesus Christ, that is, who He is as a person, 5 is established in fact 6 as being, notonly different, but comparatively, 7 superior, even far superior 8 to any and all 9 ofthe angels of God. 10

II. HEBREWS 1:5-14.

5 A. Jesus Christ is indeed the revelation of God in human form. He isdefinitely not an angel. 1

1. Angels 2 are created beings and there in not one of them 3 who has beendesignated by God, 4 at any time since the beginning of their creation, 5 to have astature on a par with that given to Jesus Christ. For concerning the person of JesusChrist, God the Father has declared in an active and aggressive manner, that He is6 far more than a messenger or assigned representative.

a. God has made it known that the Lord Jesus Christ 7 is in fact a Son. b. This is to say that Jesus Christ shares a special relationship with

God in that He has an inherent likeness to God 8 within His nature and character. 9 1) Jesus Christ shares this likeness with God the Father through the

intimacy of relationship between them. 2) God acknowledges this intimacy in the second part of verse 7 in

Psalm 2. 10 Here we see that it is God the Father 11 who made the decision in avery specific moment of time, 12 to allow the existence of Christ’s human nature13 to bear a distinct likeness of His own moral life and character. 14

1 Explanatory coordinating conjunction ga,r for, since, then; indeed, certainly.2 The tw/n Genitive noun avgge, lwn (masc pl), angel; messenger, one who is sent.3 Interrogative adjectival pronoun Ti,ni (dat masc sing), who? which? what? what sort of?4 Aorist active indicative ei=pen (3rd per sing), speak; call; assert; intend; think; order; answer/ask.5 Adverb pote,; once, formerly, at one time; ever, at any time; at last, after so long; when. Anenclitic particle is a word closely connected in pronunciation with the preceding word and nothaving an independent accent or phonological status.6 Present active indicative ei= (2nd per sing), be, exist; take place; live; located in; stay; come.7 Nominative pronoun su, (2nd per sing), you.8 Genitive pronoun mou (1st per sing), I, me.9 Nominative noun Uio,j (masc sing), son; descendant, offspring, heir; in the genitive it can meanone who shares a special relationship or a likeness to someone or something; disciple, follower.10 Psalm 2:7-9. I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, “Thou art My Son,Today I have begotten Thee. 8 Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Thine inheritance,And the [very] ends of the earth as Thy possession. 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron,Thou shalt shatter them like earthenware.”11 Nominative pronoun evgw, (1st per sing), I, me.12 Adverb sh,meron today.13 Accusative pronoun se, (2nd per sing), you.14 Perfect active indicative gege, nnhka, (1st per sing), be father of (conceive); bear, give birth to.

2. These same thoughts 1 are also reinforced 2 as we consider thestatements in 2nd Samuel 7:14. Here we see God the Father state in very assertiveterms that He 3 Himself is in fact 4 a Father 5 in regards to 6 the person of JesusChrist. 7 Specifically 8 this is to declare that Jesus Christ 9 will indeed be affirmed10 to be 11 a Son of God 12 from the perspective that there is within Him a moral orspiritual likeness that reflects the very likeness of God’s moral life and character. In this we see the uniqueness of the relationship between Jesus Christ and Godthe Father. 13

6 B. There is a contrast 14 to the statement that the Lord God makes aboutthe angels and those statement that He makes about His Son. 15 For there is adistinctive message that appears whenever 16 God the Father spoke in anticipationof the incarnation. 17

1. That is, He reveals His expectation as considers the completion of theplan of salvation as God the Son takes to Himself a human nature, 18 allowing

Him to live and function in 1 this present evil age. 2 That is, 3 the Lord God statesin very clear and active terms 4 a mandate for all 5 of the angels 6 of God. 7 Thatis, they must acknowledge who He is by worshiping 8 Him. 9

7 2. Let us look at this again. 10 a. For on the one hand 11 the Lord God says in very clear and distinct

terms 12 to 13 the angels 14 that the very nature of their creation 15 as angels 16 is tobe specifically, His 17 servants 18 in the realm of that which is spiritual. 19 And 20

they are to embrace His 21 will to the point that they consumed with obedience asa flame 22 is consumed in a fire. 23

8 b. On the other hand, 1 when He speaks of His 2 one and only Son, 3 inthe same clear and distinct manner He says that His identity is seen in the place ofHis abode.

1) That place is a throne from which He exercises dominion, rule, power, and sovereignty. 4 This is a place that expresses His 5 Divinity. 6

2) For His rule and authority will extended 7 from the Aeon 8 to theAeon. 9 And again, 10 as He rules, 11 the force 12 of His 13 decisions 14 isrighteousness itself. 15

9 3. This is affirmed in His connection with the righteousness of GodHimself.

a. For the person of Jesus Christ, in very clear and distinctmanifestations has an absolute respect for the righteousness of God 16 whichsurfaces in His affections for the life and character of God. 17

has no regard or respect 1 for the spirit of wickedness, lawlessness, and sin 2 thatpermeates the life and character of this present evil age.

c. We can see 3 in this 4 the reasoning that affirms the Divinity of theSon of God. 5

1) The fact is that God 6 Himself 7 has consecrated 8 Jesus Christ, 9

in a very active and aggressive manner, 10 recognizing Him 11 as being by naturesuperior 12 to all of the human race. 13 This God has done without reservation inthat it is something that He wanted to do. 14 10 2) We see again 15 the Divinity of the Son of God affirmed byrestating the content of verse 2. That is, the Christ 16 is in fact the Lord 17 in that 18

He has had a formative influence 19 in creation itself. As God the Son He isuncreated and existed before creation began. Before any living creature wasformed, He was there and in an active and dynamic manner, created the veryfoundations 20 of what we call the world, or planet earth. 21 And again, at the same

time, 1 the formative influence 2 of the presence of 3 Christ 4 is seen in 5 all thatexists above the surface of the earth. This includes the atmosphere and then oninto the firmament or starry heaven above. 6

11 3) We see the Divinity of the Son of God in His indestructiblenature. Unlike the creation we see all about us, He is eternal. All of the creation 7

is temporal in one form or another. That is, its present form, the created worldwill perish, or pass away. 8 That is to say, 9 everything that exists 10 can be likened11 to our clothing 12 in that it become old and with this aging, it becomes worn out.13 Unlike the creation, 14 the Son of God 15 is immutable, unalterable or to sayunchangeable. 16 12 d. All of this to say 17 that all of the creation is like unto 18 a cloak orcoat. 19 That is there is coming a time when the Son of God will roll up creation 20

III. HEBREWS 2:1-4.

1 A. There is a necessity that rises to the surface 1 in light of the pre-eminent authority of the person of Jesus Christ. 2 That necessity 3 is, in a farmore intensive manner that we have ever known before, 4 that we must pay closeattention to what the Lord Jesus Christ has said.

1. This is something that marks our 5 very identity as a person. 6 2. Specifically, those who come to know God through Jesus Christ, have

become the kind of people who give very careful attention to His every Word. 7 3. For in His Words, which must include all of the inspired New

Testament writings, we find the means and method of remaining in a closerelationship with God.

4. For it is our intense desire 8 not to make the mistake of treating theLord’s Word and wisdom in a casual manner. 9

1. This was the fundamental form by which revelation 1 was made 2 allthrough that period of time. 3

2. This being true, 4 we also know 5 that each and every 6 manifestationwas firm in that each was reliable and well-founded. For each was confirmed andverified by God.

3. The effectiveness of the Old Testament was due to this Divinelyordained process. 7

a. Specifically, the sin of mankind as we broke away from God’s will,8 and again 9 our disloyalty 10 to God was clearly identified moment by momentand that in such a way to put this spirit in its proper context. 11

b. That is, God’s judgement in issuing retribution and punishment 12

was perfectly just and deserving. 13 For in each case God’s decisions wereobjective and not arbitrary.

1. If so, we must understand that God, in and through the person of JesusChrist, has eliminated all possibility of confusion.

a. The truth is that Jesus Christ, the revelation of God in human form, perfected the notion 3 of deliverance from transgressions and rebellion to God’srule and authority. 4 If we turn away from this provision of God we do so clearlyseeing the nature of our decision and the actions created by that decision. 5

IV. HEBREWS 2:5-9

5 A. As we 1 consider and articulate 2 concerning 3 the passing away of thepresent evil age and the nature of the creation of the age to come, 4 that world5 is not 6 created by God for 7 the angels. 8 We do see in this present evil age thedominant influence of angels, specifically evil angels, who treat this world as if itwere their own. 9 Yet that world, the world of the age to come, will not be insubjection to angels of any stature. 10

6 B. There are those who believe that God, in creation, gave the angels ahigher status than mankind.

b. The question 3 here concerns 4 the nature of mankind 5 as Godcreated us. What we do know is that 6 God 7 has a very specific purpose 8 for us increation, in spite of those who resist this declaration. 9 The specificity is seen inthe vision and purpose that God has for His people. They are known individuallyas a son 10 of man, 11 a designation shared by our Lord Jesus Himself. For through12 Him 13 God has revealed His concern 14 for us. Certainly it is His desire toredeem a people out of the human race and therein realize the vision and purposethat God has for us in creating us. 7 c. In our initial creation, God made mankind 15 lower in stature 16

God has given them meaning in life and this cannot be sacrificed. c. From the beginning of his requests to God, Isaiah realizes that he

Isaiah has believed that God would grant hisrequest, even if the judgment of God had already commenced.

14 C. A major point here 1 is that 2 from the beginning of our creation, thehuman race 3 has been defined, 4 at least in part through our physicalexperience. We cannot deny the fact that we have blood 5 in our veins and 6 and aphysical body that contributes to the way in which we define life. 7

2) Rather, He destroyed the power of the evil one to have absolutecontrol over our life and character. 2 Through the atonement the Lord revealed tous 3 the possibility to have the freedom 4 we need to walk away from sin.

3) The significance of this is in the fact that all of mankind 5

realizes, with fearfulness, 6 that rightfully, 7 we face an eternal separation fromGod. 8 We have known this through 9 the whole 10 of our 11 lives. For the nature ofour life 12 reveals the fact that we are indeed, 13 enslaved 14 to a spirit of rebellion. 16 c. These observations help us to see the place that God has given to usin creation. 15 For 16 the Lord did not 17 offer such an intercession by assuming thenature 18 of the angels. 19 Rather, 20 this kind of intercession was given 21 to theposterity 22 of Abraham, 23 or to say, mankind.

a. And not only did it have to be the Lord who saves us, He also had tobecome 6 one of us. 7 For His identity with us was a key factor 8 if the mercy 9 ofGod was to be realized. It is to say that the compassion of God is not to becompared with pity.

b. Certainly we are immersed in the pain of the consequences of oursin. Yet such a situation cannot be resolve by pity. This resolution required thecompassion of God for us if we are to overcome our sin and rebellion to the Lord.
