We will be focussing on sentence structures using fronted adverbials. Fronted Adverbials

Fronted Adverbials go at the start of a sentence. They give detail to

say where/when/how often/how/how much. ALWAYS separate the fronted adverbial with a comma.

Pick the fronted adverbial that makes sense in these sentences:

___________________________, I visit my grandparents. In a moment/Every week ___________________________, I couldn’t go on stage. Overwhelmed/Once in a blue moon ___________________________, my brother will go to secondary school. Clearly/Next year ___________________________, the bank robber crept in. Without a sound/Under the bed ___________________________, there was a strange metal man. Cautiously/In the distance Can you spot what sort of fronted adverbial they are? E.g. When/how

Choose a fronted adverbial that makes sense for the sentences below:

___________________________, I jumped for joy as I scored a goal. ___________________________, I get to have a sleepover with my friends. ___________________________, the scared child turned around. ___________________________, Billy ran into the room. ___________________________, the goldfish gobbled up his food.

Say the sentence, choose the fronted adverbial, check it makes sense.

Choose a fronted adverbial, say the sentence, check it makes sense.

These sentences don’t make sense! Pick fronted adverbials that make sense.

Once in a blue moon, I won the race! ______________________ Often, my best friend threw the basketball to me. ___________________ Twice a week, the door slammed shut. ____________________ Anxiously, there was a big bang! _______________________ Upstairs, the brave mouse spoke to the Gruffalo. ____________________ Look at the pictures and think of some sentences about them. Can you make your sentences more detailed using fronted adverbials?

Read the sentence, choose a fronted adverbial, say the sentence to check it makes sense. Get some paper and a pencil to jot them down.

Can you explain what a complex sentence is? What is a fronted adverbial?

What punctuation should you ALWAYS use after a fronted adverbial? Say an example.

Read the poem inspired by the book ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort:

VOCABULARY- Do you know all the words? Make a list of the words that you don’t know how to say or don’t know their meaning. How can you find out what they mean? Ask an older person to help you go online to find out, or use a dictionary.

Spellings Remember to visit Spelling Shed online for interactive games to practise spellings! These sounds are the same, but the spellings are different:

I used my father’s binoculars to peer at a magnificent deer. The proud deer eerily stared right back at me – or so it seemed. Was he really aware of me – a lone sightseer lying low in the grass? Led by the buck, the herd of deer veered away from where I quietly lay, extremely still. I thought how glad I was that I had volunteered to observe the deer in the place of my father today. As the herd drifted in the forest, the proud deer turned and seemed to stare at me one last time. Was he sneering at me do you think?

Spelling challenge: step 1- Decide on which ‘ear’ sound has been used in words and write them down. step 2- Read the section of text, try to be speedy when you come to a ‘ear’ word. Identify and learn to read any other words in the text that you do not know. step 3- Read the section of text again, at least 3 more times, use a stopwatch to see if you can read faster each time, you should become more fluent. Extension: How many different words can you think of that have the ‘ear’ sound? Write them down and check you have chosen the right spelling.

Handwriting It’s really important to keep up with handwriting practice, joining your letters neatly. Get some paper and pencil to write these words joined up. Write each word at least 10 times. balloon

Geography For this activity you will need an atlas or access to the internet to look at a map of U.K. cities and towns. Did you know that Romans invented towns in Great Britain? They were full of fine buildings and temples. The map shows the Roman names of towns. Can you use a map to find out what they are called now?

Design and Technology The Romans were the first in Britain to use coins to pay for things. Here are some examples:

Your challenge is to design and make your own Roman coins. Choose your own materials. Think about the colour and texture. Here are some ideas: Tin foil Paper Colouring crayons/felt tips Plasticine Cake Icing Biscuits Think about: How will get a circular shape? How will you get the writing and picture on the coin? Have you compared it to our coins today? We would love to see your coins when they are finished. Send us a photo, if you can, on our class e-mails!

Computing – Roman Invasion Game Can you create your own Roman invasion board game? You could draw this out on paper first then design it using PowerPoint or a word document or create an animation using Scratch https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor/?tutorial=getStarted Think about the following:

• The aim of the game • The instructions for the game • How many lives? • How a life is lost • How points are scored • How is the game won?

Global Day June 26th 2020 At Heathfield Primary and Nursery School we enjoy learning about the world we live in and learning from the different cultures of the world. This is something that we do all the time. However, Global day is an extra special time for us to celebrate and explore the art, history, geography, values and beliefs of people from different cultural backgrounds. Over the past few years we have also been learning about UNESCO.

UNESCO works all over the world to help protect special and important places, called World Heritage Sites. UNESCO World Heritage Sites might be a building, a river, part of the ocean, a forest, ruins of an ancient building or even a waterfall.

We would still like to celebrate Global Day this year and here are some of the things that we can all get involved with. First of all, choose a UNESCO World Heritage site that you would like to learn about. One is enough but you can do as many as you like. This website will help you. whc.unesco.org/en/list/

Make some bunting and decorate it using world flags. You could also learn some words in different languages and write them on the bunting.

Make a 3D model or create a piece of art about your UNESCO World Heritage site.

Create a fact file of your chosen UNESCO World Heritage site and include some facts about the country where your chosen site is located.

Make a travel guide.

Do some international cookery.

Finally, please take lots of pictures and share them using the school twitter account.

On Thursday 25th

June, we will be celebrating RSE day! RSE Day began in Nottingham in 2018 as a celebration of positive Relationships and Sex Education happening in the City. The day provides an opportunity for schools,

communities and families to explore and discuss healthy relationships, growing up, wellbeing, respect and resilience.

The theme for this year’s RSE day is ‘Books I Love about Love!’. It would be great if children from all year groups could share pictures of their day, including activities they have completed, or books they have shared.

ChalleNGe Nottingham are also commissioning artists to deliver virtual workshops throughout the day around relationship qualities: trust, respect, communication, cooperation and resilience. Information on how to access these will be posted on our Facebook page on RSE Day. More information and ideas for parents and carers to make the

most of RSE Day can be found here: https://www.sexeducationforum.org.uk/sites/default/files/field/attachment/ 10%20ideas%20foro%20RSE%20Day%202020%20-%20parents%20%26%20carers_0.pdf

To prepare for the new statutory changes from September 2020, we are in the process of updating our RSE policy;

information on how you can access this and provide feedback will be sent out shortly. Thank-you for your continued support, we hope you have a wonderful day celebrating RSE Day! Don’t forget to send some photos to your class

email address ☺
