TThe Fall in Florida always brings new excitement and new challenges for the Great 28. We are excited about the successes we have had the first half of the year in outstanding membership growth, unprecedented advocacy and presence, and timely leadership and professional development events. To keep the momentum going,

we are planning for an outstanding 69th Annual Conference. While successes are always great to celebrate, this year, they are extra special in that our colleges and many of our members have overcome great budgetary, professional and economic challenges. Safety and Security reemerged to the forefront of our minds in Spring with the tragedy of Stoneman Douglas, political uncertainty eclipsed our thoughts in the Summer, and recently, the devastation of Hurricane Michael has threatened our members and the students we represent. AFC, many of our colleagues, students and colleges have been impacted by this devastating hurricane. Despite these challenges, I am reminded of our recurring conversations at conference last year in which we said “We Are Stronger Together!” We have weathered political storms and economic storms; therefore, I am encouraged that if we continue to band together, we will overcome this storm too. I am reminded of many of the students that we serve on a daily basis. The beauty of “The Great 28” is that we are open access and provide a pathway of opportunity for all students. Sometimes our students come to us with previous academic challenges and current economic disparities. Our response as educators is “We are here to serve you and ensure your success one class at a time.” We also often have students who are returning and need academic recovery. Our response as educators is “We are here to help you rebuild, restore, and make what may seem impossible possible so that you can succeed beyond your wildest dreams.” Friends, I say to you “AFC is here to help you rebuild, restore and recover one day at a time so that you can be renewed stronger and better than ever before!” We are an association that is strong and resilient because of our members and leaders. Although the hurricane’s devastation may look impossible to overcome for many of our members today, through unity, positive encouragement, all hands on deck and togetherness, recovery stronger and better is MISSION POSSIBLE. It is my hope that in November we can all make it to conference to celebrate life together. My prayers are with you and your loved ones. Your AFC President, colleague and friend,

Just a little over a year ago, Hurricane Irma rolled up the Keys, the west coast and through central Florida, wreaking havoc on as many as half of our colleges. The leadership and staffs of these colleges, many weakened by personal loss, pulled up their boot straps and went to work. Within a few weeks, almost every college was back in operation. Amazing people do amazing things.

Last week, Tallahassee, Gulf Coast State, and Chipola experienced the onslaught of Hurricane Michael, the third worst storm to hit the continental US. We know the latter two got hit very hard, and Tallahassee sustained some damage as well. We are still getting info on the extent of damage to those campuses and will continue to share that via our Facebook and other social media outlets. Kudos to Chancellor Madeline Pumariega and her team for keeping us informed. The devastation in some locales is beyond belief. Numerous communities, along the Panhandle coast and

inland past the Florida border into Alabama and Georgia, sustained major damage and are now barely recognizable. Almost a half a million homes and businesses lost power impacting 1.4 million people. Almost 200,000 of those homes are in the Tallahassee area. More importantly though is the impact to AFC members. We are hearing anecdotal stories and have confirmed some harrowing tales of loss. Members in Panama City have lost their homes. There is severe damage to member homes in Marianna. AFC comrades have lost vehicles, roofs, clothes, food and then some. And as we did last year, we are hoping all AFC members will pitch in and help. Here’s what we plan to do, and how you can help.

need.

At the AFC, we like to think we do a lot for our members with regard to leadership, professional development and advocacy. But, that all pales in the face of camaraderie and goodwill among members. If we all do just a little, it will add up to quite a lot.

AFC Family Hurricane Michael Relief Fund The Association of Florida Colleges Foundation, Inc. and the Association of Florida Colleges have combined resources up to $10,000 to provide financial support up to $500 to AFC members who experienced extensive loss to personal property and possessions during Hurricane Michael.

Funds may be used for any tangible need such as temporary housing, transportation, clothing, food, child care, medical, and repairs. Funds will be provided directly to the eligible applicant. However, more funds are needed.

TO APPLY FOR RELIEF ASSISTANCE, GO HERE AND CLICK ON THE "APPLY NOW" BUTTON TO REVIEW THE CRITERIA AND SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION. Applications will be accepted until all funds are disbursed.

LUCAS DANIEL BOYCEAuthor, Professional Speaker Lucas Boyce is a published author and professional speaker. Among some of the clients he has provided services for include Think Tanks, political and policy organizations, communications, faith-based, education, foster care and adoption. Clients Lucas has provided services to include think tanks and organizations involved in policy, communications, faith, education, foster care and adoption. He served as Director of business development, community relations, multicultural insights, cause marketing, and government affairs. Prior to the Magic, Boyce served at the White House in the Office of Political Affairs. Boyce also spearheaded proactive communication, public relations and education outreach among diverse communities, constituencies and issues on behalf of the President. During his tenure at the White House, Boyce also served in the Office of Public Liaison. In this role, he served as the President’s principal liaison to the African American community in addition to leading outreach to the professional sports industry and collegiate sports. His work also provided an opportunity to work in the fields of healthcare and economic policy. Prior to this, Boyce worked for Direct Impact, a public affairs firm in Alexandria, Virginia. Lucas is the author of Living Proof: From Foster Care to the White House and the NBA, published in January 2011. With over twenty years of professional speaking experience he travels across the country giving speeches focused on leadership, team work, overcoming obstacles, and making a positive impact on the lives of others. Lucas has served on a number of non-profit boards at the national, state and local level. He currently serves on the advisory board of the National Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI). Lucas was honored by the University of Central Missouri Alumni Association with their 2012 Outstanding Recent Alumnus award. In 2011, the Orlando Business Journal recognized Lucas as the 40 Under 40 Man of the Year. Boyce received his bachelor’s degree in political science and speech communication from the University of Central Missouri and graduated with his Executive MBA from Rollins College in May 2013.

What’s So Special About the CCP Program?What is the CCP? The Certified College Professional (CCP) Program provides AFC members with the opportunity to earn a certificate related to their work as a college professional, and exposes them to content and experience they may not be able to obtain elsewhere. The CCP program provides significant value-added benefits for membership in the AFC and enhances the AFC’s role as the primary professional development provider for the Florida College System.The first of the AFC’s three certificate offerings of the CCP is the Florida College Professional Certificate (FCPC). The other two certificates currently under development are the Florida College Leader Certificate (FCLC) and the Florida College Executive Certificate (FCEC).

College Colors DayOn August 31st, 2018 the Chipola AFC Chapter gathered together to celebrate College Colors Day. There were five College teams represented including Mississippi State, University of Alabama, Auburn University, University of Florida, and Florida State University. What better way to kick off the football season than a little football rivalry!

Golden GalaEverything was turning up gold at Chipola’s back-to-school luncheon on Aug. 13 hosted by the Chipola AFC Chapter. Chipola officials were celebrating earning a Gold ranking for the second straight year in the state’s Performance Funding Model program. Gold tablecloths and centerpieces adorned the Cultural Center. Employees were treated to a lunch of gold-colored food and participated in a gold trivia game. Chipola was one of only five colleges to earn Gold among the 28 colleges in the Florida College System. The Florida Board of Education announced the annual performance rankings of Gold, Silver and Bronze in July. The five Gold colleges are: Chipola College, Santa Fe, Seminole State, South Florida State and Valencia. All five colleges also received a Gold ranking in 2017. Chipola earned the Gold ranking for performance in four areas: student retention, graduation rate, job placement, and entry level wages after graduation. Chipola President Dr. Sarah Clemmons said, “We are so proud to earn Gold in back-to-back years. This affirms the excellent work of our students and employees.”

College of Central Florida employees donate school supplies to business partner, College Park Elementary School.

CCF/AFC Chapter Donates School Supplies to College Park Elementary

The College of Central Florida’s Association of Florida Colleges chapter donated

more than 700 school supply items to College Park Elementary School, estimated to

be valued between $1,500 and $2,000. Employees collected the items throughout

the month of August in preparation for the new school year.

“College Park Elementary has a student population with approximately 80

percent of families living in poverty. As a partner, we have a unique opportunity

to serve these children and provide school supplies so that they are prepared for

class, said Kelly Besser, AFC member and business partner liaison. “AFC holds an

important role in organizing the supply drive; one of the values of AFC is service and

we’re pleased to include this in our service opportunities.”

The CF chapter has 282 members and has been hosting the school supply drive

annually as part of the partnership it has with College Park Elementary School.

PENSACOLA STATE COLLEGEThe Pensacola State College AFC Chapter kicked off the academic year by

sponsoring breakfast during our new employee orientation. This event welcomed

new faculty and staff to the College and encouraged our new team members to get

involved with AFC locally. Obi Kalu, Membership Vice President, spoke with faculty

and staff about the benefits of joining the AFC and the opportunities to connect

with colleagues throughout the state at conferences and other events hosted

throughout the year. The Executive Board of the chapter is working on planning

several networking events for our members and are currently collecting items

for Give Kids the World Village as part of the AFC Annual Conference community

service project.

ST. JOHNS RIVER STATE COLLEGESJR State celebrates 60th Anniversary with Diamond Jubilee Gala

St. Johns River State College held a Diamond Jubilee Gala in

commemoration of its 60th Anniversary, at the Thrasher-Horne

Center in Orange Park. President Joe Pickens, J.D., welcomed

approximately 220 community members, alumni, retirees and

employees.

The Gala included dinner, a VIP Cocktail Reception and

“Bubbles and Bling,” a drawing in which Wendell Davis, vice

chairman for the SJR State Board of Trustees, won a pair of

Forevermark 1.5 ct. diamond earrings valued at over $8,000,

courtesy of Underwood Jewelers.

Twelve distinguished alumni were recognized for

exemplifying extraordinary citizenship through volunteerism,

mentorship, philanthropy and advocacy. Special recognition was

also given to the College’s former president of 36 years, Dr. Robert

L. McLendon, Jr. C. L. Overturf, Jr., dean of students and debate

team coach during the 1960s and 1970s, gave the invocation.

Also contributing reflections on 60 years of service to the

community were District Board of Trustee Chairman Samuel

Garrison and Evelyn Hewett, 89, a member of the 1960 class of 22

students to first graduate from St. Johns River State College.

In 1958, SJR State began serving Northeast Florida with an

inaugural class of 191 students in Palatka. During the last six

decades, the College has expanded to include campuses in Clay

and St. Johns counties and serves approximately 11,000 students.

CommissionsFACULTY COMMISSIONFaculty Commission 2018 Spring Conference: Professor of the Year Teaching DemonstrationsThis year, the Faculty Commission joined the Region V Spring Conference at Indian River State College (IRSC) in May to host the Professor of the Year Teaching Demonstrations. We were joined by seven excellent semi-finalists! Their 15 minute teaching demonstrations ranged in topics from understanding waves and music and how that related to yellow submarines, to population models using calculus and how that relates to lions in Africa, to how our chromosomes make us who we are, to a caution not to fall prey to “fake news”, to the history of American Sign Language . . .and more! If you missed it, please join us for the teaching demonstrations of our three finalists at the AFC’s Annual Conference in November. The 2018 Professor of the Year will be determined by a panel of judges and announced that evening at the AFC Gala. It’s a great opportunity to learn best practices from the FL Great 28’s outstanding faculty members. Thank you to our semifinalists and judges for their time and participation, and to our wonderful hosts at IRSC. We had a wonderful session!

HCC AFC Chapter President Dana Livesay’s painting, Vision of Italy, was accepted to the HCC Gallery showing celebrating the college’s 50th anniversary. It is one of 20 employee submissions selected by jury to be displayed with the permanent collection for two months. HCC will host an artist’s reception October 18th at the Ybor Campus.

Indian River State College recognizes Port St. Lucie resident and AFC member Lila White as the September 2018 Staff Employee of the Month. Lila joined the IRSC family in June of 2005 working as a Counselor for the Women’s Development Center. Additionally during this time, she served as an adjunct instructor. Today, Lila works as a Program Specialist II in the Business Technology Division led by Dr. Prashanth Pilly. In her role as Program Specialist, Lila is known as an individual who consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty to serve both faculty and students. Lila is a thorough and meticulous planner, and can be found working behind the scenes planning and preparing for many programs and activities occurring within the Business Technology Division. Lila has also become an integral part of the accounting department, assisting both faculty and students. Lila successfully runs the Summer Programs Expanding Horizons in Okeechobee and the QUEST in Fort Pierce. In whatever role she serves, Lila steps in wherever necessary to help move the entire division forward. In addition to her regular duties Lila works closely with the Sigma Beta Delta (SBD) Honors Society and assists in planning the annual Money Show University trip organized by the Investment Club. She also serves as a member of the Planning and Assessment Workgroup. Those who work with Lila know best how she contributes to the success of Business Technology Division IRSC. One co-worker states, “Lila is the hardworking heart and soul of our division and always willing to lend a hand and help our students.” They continue sharing, “She is an optimistic professional who always has the interest of the college and division first.” Another shares, “She was instrumental in increasing the accounting department partnerships with the professional accounting community in our community.” Finally, one employee states, “Lila is the true definition of a Team Player and always leaves

Seminole State College of Florida has received the 2018 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. This is the fifth consecutive year the College has been named as a HEED Award recipient.
