Since 1886, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) has been a catalyst for creativity in the Twin Cities, the region, and the nation. A private, nationally accredited art and design college, MCAD focuses on nurturing tomorrow’s artists, designers, and critical thinkers. The college is home to nearly eight hundred students from twenty-nine states and thirteen countries.

Located in the heart of Minneapolis—a city home to world class art museums; a theater scene second only to New York; beautiful riverfronts and local lakes; and culturally rich neighborhoods with galleries, parks, and local events—the college shares its campus with one of the nation’s premiere comprehensive art museums, the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

The college boasts state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including Mac computer labs fully-equipped with the latest software, a light-filled painting studio along with individual painting studio spaces, animation studios, an on-campus printing bureau, gallery spaces, an extensive art supply store, a cafeteria and student center, and social green space.

Graduates have been recruited by Sony Pictures, Nickelodeon, Target Corp., Urban Outfitters, The Walt Disney Company, and many independent design firms, while others establish thriving freelance businesses as artists and designers.

THE EXPERIENCEThe Pre-College Summer Session (PCSS) is a three-week, highly structured, and challenging classroom and studio-based experience developed to guide serious art students in the process of maturing as artists and individuals.

Students spend full days under the guidance of professional instructors, immersed in both foundational and intensive major classes. Evenings and weekends provide a chance to build new friendships, explore Minneapolis on guided excursions, and spend dedicated time working in the studios and labs. Trained staff and professional faculty will be with them every step of the journey.

Top animators have a solid foundation in the fine arts alongside experience using both traditional and digital materials. Think: Pixar and video games.

MCAD is committed to cutting-edge technology, making it a hot space for 3D animation. It is also one of only a few schools that teach hand-drawn 2D techniques. Graduates have found positions with Nickelodeon, FOX, SyFy Channel, Pixel Farm, the Children’s Theatre Company, and more.

—PCSS Graduate

Comic art students learn the fundamental lessons of storytelling, character development, penciling, and inking to create short comic book stories and learn the production skills necessary to produce their own edition of comic books.

MCAD is one of the only colleges in the country to offer a comic art degree program. Graduates have taken positions at Marvel Comics, BOOM! Studio, Lucid Publishing, 2D Cloud Studio, and Periscope, and have developed thriving freelance work.

“It was a once in a lifetime experience that I will forever be grateful for. I learned more about myself as an artist and a

person than I could have ever imagined. And, those three weeks gave me the courage to pursue even my wildest of dreams.”

–PCSS Graduate

Painting students learn skills in perception, imagination, and conceptualization, as well as knowledge of color, form, and composition. Students work in a shared studio with still life setups, live models, self-portraits, and digital photographs to see how contrast, color, light, and shadow can illuminate the complexities of their subject matter. Please note: Professional nude models may be used in this program.

MCAD has a fine arts tradition that extends beyond a century, helping to develop artists who have established themselves as preeminent creatives and whose work can be found on Broadway, at Urban Outfitters, and locally at the Guthrie Theater and Walker Art Center. Work by MCAD painting alumni can be found in galleries and museum collections nationwide.

Note: Students in the painting major pay a $100 materials fee in addition to the tuition cost.

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION CLASSESThe portfolio is the single most important component of an art school application, and colleges across the nation are stepping up their requirements for admission. Most require several observational drawings, or drawings made from what the artist sees, rather than from imagination or a photograph.

This studio drawing class is designed to help motivated visual arts students develop exemplary observational draw-ings for their portfolios. Students will work with still life, landscape, interior, and figurative subject matter as they explore the fundamentals of a good drawing: composition, structure, value, line, and expression.

Studio instruction will be supplemented by art history discussions, visiting artist and MCAD Admissions staff presentations, and regular homework assignments. Portfolio Preparation courses are offered throughout the year.

STUDIO INTENSIVESPre-College Studio Intensives are weeklong classes for teens ages 15–18 on topics including drawing and painting, digital photography and filmmaking, and graphic design and illustration. Students who successfully complete a Pre-College Studio Intensive are awarded one MCAD credit. Summer 2017 dates will be announced in January. Students do not live on campus during the Pre-College Studio Intensives. Combine three weeklong intensives for three elective credits!
