Background (1)• Mission Idea Contest was launched in 2010 to encourage

innovative exploitation of micro/nano-satellites to provide useful capabilities, services.

• It provides aerospace engineers, college students, consultants, and anybody interested in space with opportunities to present their creative ideas and gain international attention.

MIC2 final presentation, Oct. 10, 2012, Nagoya, Japan

Background(2): Lessons learntTwo MICs were successfully organized in Japan in 2011 & 2012. • Results

– Potential utilizations of micro/nano-satellites were provided in the large number of submitted proposals ( regarding the resolution of local and global problems.

• MIC1: 62 applications from 24 countries • MIC2:72 applications from 31 countries

• Difficulties – To realize the mission ideas due to a lack of resources and

capabilities– To formulate ideas for people with little or no background in

space engineering, but with good knowledge of other fields

• New approach => Pre-MIC3 workshop– Match making between Users and Satellite developers

Pre-MIC3 Workshop Overview• Match-making event for potential satellite users

who are looking for solutions and satellite developers who can engineer the user’s idea.– Target satellite(s): weighing less than 50 kg

• The formed team (user + developer) will be encouraged to apply for MIC3

• Date: during the 1st UNISEC Global Meeting scheduled in Nov 23-24, 2013

• Venue: University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan• Organizer: University Space Engineering Consortium

(UNISEC)

• Sponsor: Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Mitsubishi UFJ Foundation, UNOOSA-BSTI

Objectives

• To assist potential applicants in improving the quality of their mission ideas, which are expected to be submitted to MIC3.– the Pre-MIC3 workshop will provide an opportunity for

selected users, who do not yet have space engineering background, to present their ideas. The satellite developers or engineers will aid them in translating these ideas into engineered satellite missions.

• To increase the probability of realization of the mission by facilitating international collaborations between users and engineers.

Pre-MIC3 workshop will provide an opportunity for international experts and potential applicants to exchange opinions and advice to facilitate the match-making process.

Seeking Regional Coordinators forPre-MIC3 and MIC3

– Possible advice to satellite users and developers in your region and beyond

– Coordinating functions between the above two within your capacity

– Possible approach to policy makers and business people in your region for the realization of satellite mission ideas with an implication of contributing to a better future of your society or country

– Consultation with MIC Office about the most effective ways of applying for the pre-MIC3, and for the MIC3 to be held in 2014 (e.g. organizing a regional seminar, using a space event in your region or disseminating information through existing network)

– Facilitating applications for the pre-MIC3 as satellite users or satellite developers in your region.
