Sunday entries (left-hand page) highlight certain aspects of church life or a national or global campaign. These are followed by daily prayers from all over the diocese.

You’ll notice some days have a name next to

them. These are the names of people down the centuries who

are champions of the faith and who we

remember on these days. If you have some extra time, why not do some research into who they are and what they did?

The Anglican Communion encompasses a rich array of countries (165!) and cultures.

This Anglican Diary enables us to feel connected in prayer to Archbishops, Bishops (indicated by ‘+’) and our fellow Christians all over the globe.

Praying Together is a booklet to be used daily. Do continue to feed back to the team who produce it how you want it to look and what you want it to contain. Specific prayer suggestions can be submitted by following this link:www.cofe.io/PT

Reconciliation“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation”2 Corinthians 5:18

Reconciliation springs from God’s desire to be in eternal relationship with his creation, including the human race (John 3:16) St Paul reminds us that this is a “free gift” (Romans 6:23 and 5:8).

Christians who pray respond joyfully at three basic levels.

Personally, in the sacrament of reconciliation(‘confession’) and in some traditions simply “confessing your sins to one another that you may be healed” (James 5:18).

Pastorally in making peace where there is dispute, following the steps taught by Jesus (Matthew 18:15-17), starting one to one, “when the two of you are alone”.

Publicly at policy level where political power is exercised remembering that “the whole creation has been groaning in travail” (Romans 8:22).

Let us be those who reflect on these Scriptures, pray and live in the forgiveness of Jesus who “proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near” (Ephesians 2:17).

David Urquhart, Bishop of Birmingham.May 2015

Mrs Jill MacDonald, St James, Rounds Green writes that their Place of Welcome has been running for a year now but so far very few members of the community have taken up the invitation to come in for free refreshments and chat. We pray that this trend will change and more people will respond positively to the offered hospitality.

We pray for the General Election being held in our country today. We pray for all the candidates, for the parties they represent and for stability in government. We hold before God the new parliament to be elected today, that it may gain the support and trust of the electorate and that wisdom and justice may result from parliamentary debates.

We give thanks to God for churchwardens as key local church leaders, and for those this month being admitted by the archdeacons as churchwardens for the first time. We pray for their partnership with the parish clergy and for their own strength and well-being as they attend to their tasks and responsibilities.

The Revd Sue Chandler and The Revd Dr David Cheetham ask for your prayers for St Margaret, Olton during the interregnum. Please pray for all who will assume leadership roles during this time, particularly their two churchwardens Natalie and Jonathan. And give thanks for the generosity of both visiting clergy and readers who have so kindly offered assistance.

Week 2 Easter 6

On Wednesday 20 May there will be a conference to publicise the findings from the Birmingham Conversations. This has been an interfaith discussion group headed up by Bishop David and Dr Andrew Smith. They have met over the past six months to consider ‘What does Lived Faith Look Like in a 21st Century City’. They have discussed a variety of, often contentious, issues. Not necessarily seeking consensus but a way to air different views that communities can live well together.

Heavenly Father,We thank you for the rich variety of cultures and people we have in Birmingham, and for those willing to give time and commitment to seek the common good. We ask that the findings from the Birmingham Conversations will inspire us all to seek reconciliation with our neighbours and to seek to live well together with those who are different to ourselves. Amen.

MON 11

We pray for the Churches and Industry Group Birmingham and Solihull (CIGB) with their Annual General Meeting and lecture this evening. We pray for all who are engaged in the world of economics and employment and for our network of workplace chaplains who embody the outreach of the church and the presence of Christ for many people in their work contexts.

The Salter Street and Shirley Team Parish are looking forward to the visit of Bishop David for their Confirmation today. Week 4 Pentecost Whitsunday

A DVD called ‘Matilda’s Malawi’ has been produced to showcase the Malawi Partnership as it approaches its 50th anniversary and to give a voice to Malawian Christians. It recounts a day in the life of a 15-year-old schoolgirl, the needs of Malawians, the pressures of poverty and the hopes and opportunities for a better life. Along the way it shows how Birmingham has contributed to meeting those needs by resourcing and helping the Malawian Church to function more effectively.

The DVD runs for 25 minutes and copies are being sent to all parishes. It is being launched in six venues across the diocese during May, often in the context of a Sunday evening service. Further details can be found atwww.cofebirmingham.com/malawi

Pray that the DVD may be effective in rekindling our love and support for the Church in Malawi.

Churches and Industry Group Birmingham and Solihull has more voluntary chaplains. Rotimi Benjamin and Pat Saunders are supporting Jericho Foundation’s staff who help excluded young people into sustainable employment with catering, construction and retailing skills. It is exciting that Workplace Chaplaincy is becoming more ecumenical and attracting volunteers from Pentecostal churches as well as the more traditional churches. They are also learning about the barriers facing young people trying to get into paid work. Other new chaplains include Shirley Witney and Jean Murray (St Alphege, Solihull) with Solihull Town Centre Chaplaincy.

Bartholomew the Apostle

TUE 25

The Revd Dr Richard Sudworth, Christ Church, Sparkbrook writes: Today we start the Summer Holiday Kids’ Club in the church. Last year was our first event and it was a great success in establishing confidence in the church running a holiday club for largely Muslim children around Bible themes. Pray for peace, safety and the deepening of relationships between the wider families and all those associated with Christ Church.

Mothers’ Union have appointed a Community Development Coordinator, Sandra Golding, to help support and encourage projects led by members to work in partnership with clergy and community groups. Please pray for the success of this initiative:

Empowering God, who came to earth and lived among us, so that by your presence and teaching, we could see the power we have to change the world, thank you for empowering Mothers’ Union to set up and run the projects already in place to further the aim of Christian Care for families and pray that Sandra will be able to use her expertise and experience to build on the success, giving enhanced inspiration and confidence in your purpose for us.

Enable us all, God of wisdom to seek to build relationships, to learn from each other, to support and value each other, to grow in Christ and keep forward looking in your service.

The Revd Rebecca Clarke, Immanuel, Highters Heath writes: Once a month a team of volunteers open the church for those in the parish who have been bereaved. It offers an opportunity for people to come into church and light a candle in memory of their loved ones and to just ‘be’ for a while. Gracious God enfold the bereaved in your love, Amen.

The Revd Louise Shaw, St Paul, Dosthill writes: We are hugely thankful to God for the people who come into the life of the church often due to baptisms, weddings, funerals and the local primary school. Please pray for us as we try and make the most of our opportunities and resources, particularly in our discipleship of children and young people.

Today we thank God for all the young people and children who are intentionally living out their faith in their lives at school. We pray for the Christian union, lunch and after school clubs that seek to draw people together and reach out to their friends. We ask that God would encourage them in their faith journeys and friendships in the new school year.

The Revd Gary Birchall, St Michael, Boldmere writes: We pray that St Michael’s will be a Christian community in which people find friendship, welcome, belonging and support and encounter the living God through creative, contemporary, traditional worship. We pray for our developing work with children and families and our financial response to a Stewardship program.
