¡DUC IN ALTUM!

(John Paul II, Novo Millennio Ineunte, n. 58 y 59)

“Let us go forward in hope! A new millennium is opening before the Church like a vast ocean upon which we shall venture, relying on the help of Christ. The Son of God, who became incarnate two thousand years ago out of love for humanity, is at work even today: we need discerning eyes to see this and, above all, a generous heart to become the instruments of his work.

Christ bids us to set out once more on our journey: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations". The missionary mandate accompanies us into the Third Millennium and urges us to share the enthusiasm of the very first Christians: we can count on the power of the same Spirit.

At the beginning of this new century, our steps must quicken as we travel the highways of the world. Many are the paths on which each one of us and each of our Churches must travel, but there is no distance between those who are united in the same communion. if ours has been a genuine pilgrimage, it will have as it were stretched our legs for the journey still ahead. We need to imitate the zeal of the Apostle Paul: "Straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal..”. and at the same time, we must all imitate the contemplation of Mary, who in her home of Nazareth, treasured in her heart the mystery of her Son. (cf. Lk 2:51)

On this journey we are accompanied by the Blessed Virgin Mary to whom I entrusted the Third Millennium. During this year I have often invoked her as the "Star of the New Evangelization". Now I point to Mary once again as the radiant dawn and sure guide for our steps”.

“Go out into the deep… At your command, I will lower the nets”.

(Luke 5: 4-6)

Go out into the deep!

Ardent Witnesses of the New Evangelization!

THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH TODAY IN AMERICA: THE NEW EVANGELIZATION

Ecclesia in America

10:00 pm First Hour of Eucharistic Adoration

Dedicated to the Holy Father and all Bishops, those who take the bark out into the deep

Scripture Passage: Lk 5:4-6 “Go out into the deep”

Intention: *For the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, and for all of the bishops of the world, that they may be ardent witnesses of the Gospel and wise and courageous Teachers of the Magisterium of the Church. Under the mandate of Christ may they cast nets without fear and be disposed to go out into the deep for a miraculous catch. In a special way, we pray for Archbishop Thomas Wenski and our auxiliary bishops, and all of the bishops of the dioceses where we serve and where we have come from.

John Paul II, Apostolic Exhortation, Ecclesia in America “The commemoration of the five hundred years of evangelization will achieve its full meaning if it becomes a commitment by you the Bishops, together with your priests and people, a commitment not to a re-evangelization but to a new evangelization — new in ardor, methods and expression.” [Ecclesia in America, 6; citing the speech to the Council of Latin American Bishops in Port-au-Prince (March 9, 1983)]

We thank you, Lord Jesus, because the Gospel of the Father's love, with which you came to save the world, has been proclaimed far and wide in America as a gift of the Holy Spirit that fills us with gladness. We thank you for the gift of your Life, which you have given us by loving us to the end: your Life makes us children of God, brothers and sisters to each other. Increase, O Lord, our faith and our love for you, present in all the tabernacles of the continent. Grant us to be faithful witnesses to your Resurrection for the younger generation of Americans, so that, in knowing you, they may follow you and find in you their peace and joy. Only then will they know that they are brothers and sisters of all God's children scattered ùthroughout the world. You who, in becoming man, chose to belong to a human family, teach families the virtues which filled with light the family home of Nazareth. May families always be united, as you and the Father are one, and may they be living witnesses to love, justice and solidarity; make them schools of respect, forgiveness and mutual help, so that the world may believe; help them to be the source of vocations to the priesthood and the consecrated life, and all the other forms of firm Christian commitment. Protect your Church and the Successor of Peter, to whom you, Good Shepherd, have entrusted the task of feeding your flock. Grant that the Church in America may flourish and grow richer in the fruits of holiness. Teach us to love your Mother, Mary, as you loved her. Give us strength to proclaim

your word with courage in the work of the new evangelization, so that the world may know new hope. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of America, pray for us!

Representatives from all vocations will pray this Holy Rosary for the bishops.

11:00 pm Second Hour of Eucharistic Adoration Dedicated to Priests and Deacons, so that they may preach in time and out of

time the Gospel Scripture Passage: (Jn 20, 21)

“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” Intention: *For all Priests, so that inflamed with the love for Christ and humanity, they may have a truly missionary heart to navigate through the ocean of humanity and preach the Gospel with joy. For all deacons, may their mission of being carriers of the Word and serving those in most need, be a visible sign of the love of Christ for the human person.

John Paul II, Encyclical Redemptoris Missio, 67 “As co-workers of the bishops, priests are called by virtue of the sacrament of Orders to share in concern for the Church's mission: “The spiritual gift that priests have received in ordination prepares them, not for any narrow and limited mission, but for the most universal and all embracing mission of salvation 'to the end of the earth.' For every priestly ministry shares in the universal scope of the mission that Christ entrusted to his apostles.” (Presbyterorum Ordinis, 10; Ad Gentes, 39) For this reason, the formation of candidates to the priesthood must aim at giving them "the true Catholic spirit whereby they will learn to transcend the bounds of their own diocese, country or rite, and come to the aid of the whole Church, in readiness to preach the Gospel anywhere.” (Optatam Totius, 20) All priests must have the mind and the heart of missionaries - open to the needs of the Church and the world, with concern for those farthest away, and especially for the non-Christian groups in their own area. They should have at heart, in their prayers and particularly at the Eucharistic Sacrifice, the concern of the whole Church for all of humanity.”

Conclude with the prayer of Consecration of Priests to the Immaculate Heart by H.H. Benedict XVI

ACT OF ENTRUSTMENT AND CONSECRATION OF PRIESTS TO THE

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY PRAYER OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI

Immaculate Mother, in this place of grace, called together by the love of your Son Jesus the Eternal High Priest, we, sons in the Son and his priests, consecrate ourselves to your maternal Heart, in order to carry out faithfully the Father’s Will. We are mindful that, without Jesus, we can do nothing good (cf. Jn 15:5) and that only through him, with him and in him, will we be instruments of salvation for the world. Bride of the Holy Spirit, obtain for us the inestimable gift of transformation in Christ. Through the same power of the Spirit that overshadowed you, making you the Mother of the Saviour, help us to bring Christ your Son to birth in ourselves too. May the Church be thus renewed by priests who are holy, priests transfigured by the grace of him who makes all things new. Mother of Mercy, it was your Son Jesus who called us to become like him: light of the world and salt of the earth (cf. Mt 5:13-14). Help us, through your powerful intercession, never to fall short of this sublime vocation, nor to give way to our selfishness, to the allurements of the world and to the wiles of the Evil One. Preserve us with your purity, guard us with your humility

Page 7: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

and enfold us with your maternal love that is reflected in so many souls consecrated to you, who have become for us true spiritual mothers. Mother of the Church, we priests want to be pastors who do not feed themselves but rather give themselves to God for their brethren, finding their happiness in this. Not only with words, but with our lives, we want to repeat humbly, day after day, Our “here I am”. Guided by you, we want to be Apostles of Divine Mercy, glad to celebrate every day the Holy Sacrifice of the Altar and to offer to those who request it the sacrament of Reconciliation. Advocate and Mediatrix of grace, you who are fully immersed in the one universal mediation of Christ, invoke upon us, from God, a heart completely renewed that loves God with all its strength and serves mankind as you did. Repeat to the Lord your efficacious word: “They have no wine” (Jn 2:3), so that the Father and the Son will send upon us a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Full of wonder and gratitude at your continuing presence in our midst, in the name of all priests I too want to cry out: “Why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Lk 1:43). Our Mother for all time, do not tire of “visiting us”, consoling us, sustaining us. Come to our aid

Page 8: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

and deliver us from every danger that threatens us. With this act of entrustment and consecration, we wish to welcome you more deeply, more radically, for ever and totally into our human and priestly lives. Let your presence cause new blooms to burst forth in the desert of our loneliness, let it cause the sun to shine on our darkness, let it restore calm after the tempest, so that all mankind shall see the salvation of the Lord, who has the name and the face of Jesus, who is reflected in our hearts, for ever united to yours! Amen! Priests and deacons will pray this Holy Rosary.

FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE HEART 12:00 am Third Hour of Eucharistic Adoration

Dedicated to Religous Life, with marian prontitude, we may go through the mountains of humanity

Scripture Passage: (Lc 1: 39-40) “During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a

town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.”

Intention: *For all religious sisters, so that with the powerful language of a life transfigured in the image and presence of the Virgin Mary, we may be disposed, as She, to go with promptitude through the mountains and oceans of the heart of the Church and the world, to bring the joy of the life of Jesus who abides in our hearts. With a Marian spirit, may we be disposed to be ardent witnesses of the New Evangelization to build a civilization of love and life. John Paul II, Encyclical Redemptoris Missio, 69 and Apostolic Letter to the Religious of Latin America, 31

The Church needs to make known the great gospel values of which she is the bearer. No one witnesses more effectively to these values than those who

Page 9: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

profess the consecrated life in chastity, poverty and obedience, in a total gift of self to God and in complete readiness to serve humanity and society after the example of Christ. [It is the] religious sisters in whom virginity for the sake of the kingdom is transformed into a motherhood in the spirit that is rich and fruitful.

The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, is mother in a very particular way of each one of you. Know how to invoke her as the star of your path. Religious life is nothing other than translating to one’s existence the life of Mary. She herself is the first Evangelizer, and Queen of the Apostles, who gives impulse to the apostolate and mission, who will also orient the impulse of religious in the new evangelization, “I entrust to Our Lady of Guadalupe, “the first evangelizer of America,” the yearnings and hopes I entrust to you. She truly is the “Star of the evangelization,” the evangelizer of our people. Her maternal closeness gave a decisive impulse to the preaching of the message of Christ on these lands. May She continue to guide your steps and make fruitful your evangelization tasks. May the Virgin of the magnificat, in whose canticle resounds her fidelity to God and her solidarity with the hopes of the people, you may remain faithful to your consecration and be generous cooperators of Christ and your Church in the new evangelization.” (Apostolic Letter to the Religious of Latin America, June 29, 1990, no.31)

Mary, image of the Church, the Bride without spot or wrinkle, which by imitating you "preserves with virginal purity an integral faith, a firm hope and a sincere charity", sustain consecrated persons on their journey towards the sole and eternal Blessedness. To you, Virgin of the Visitation, do we entrust them, that they may go forth to meet human needs, to bring help, but above all to bring Jesus. Teach them to proclaim the mighty things which the Lord accomplishes in the world, that all peoples may extol the greatness of his name. Support them in their work for the poor, the hungry, those without hope, the little ones and all who seek your Son with a sincere heart. To you, our Mother, who desire the spiritual and apostolic

renewal of your sons and daughters in a response of love and complete dedication to Christ, we address our confident prayer. You who did the will of the Father, ever ready in obedience, courageous in poverty and receptive in fruitful virginity, obtain from your divine Son that all who have received the gift of following him in the consecrated life may be enabled to bear witness to that gift by their transfigured lives, as they joyfully make their way with all their brothers and sisters towards our heavenly homeland and the light which will never grow dim. We ask you this, that in everyone and in everything glory, adoration and love may be given to the Most High Lord of all things, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

SCTJM will pray this Holy Rosary. 1:00 am Fourth Hour of Eucharistic Adoration Dedicated to the Lay Faithful in their evangelization mission within the world

Scripture Passage: (Mt 20: 1-2) “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage,

he sent them into his vineyard.” Intention: *For all the lay faithful, so that by living their faith with authenticity and assuming with joy and responsibility their mission to edify the world from within, they may be covered by the power of the Holy Spirit to go out into the deep of the secular structures and build, with the holiness of their lives and their testimony of word and deed, a civilization based on the values of the Gospel. John Paul II, Apostolic Exhortation, Ecclesia in America, 66 The Risen Christ, before his Ascension into heaven, sent the Apostles to preach the Gospel to the whole world (cf. Mk 16:15) and conferred on them the powers needed to carry out this mission....In effect, Christ passed on to the Apostles the mission which he had received from the Father (cf. Jn 20:21), and in this way gave them a share in his powers. Yet “the lay faithful too, precisely as members of the Church, have the vocation and mission of proclaiming the Gospel: they are prepared for this work by the sacraments of Christian initiation and by the gifts of the Holy Spirit.” They have been “in their own way made sharers in the priestly, prophetic and kingly functions of Christ”. Consequently, “the lay faithful, in virtue of their participation in the prophetic mission of Christ, are fully part of this work of the Church” (241) and so should feel called and encouraged to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom. Jesus'

Page 11: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

words: “You too, go into the vineyard” (Mt 20:4), (242) must be seen as addressed not only to the Apostles but to all who desire to be authentic disciples of the Lord. Consequently, “to evangelize is the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her most profound identity”. As the Church's Supreme Pastor, I urgently desire to encourage all the members of God's People, particularly those living in America — where I first appealed for a commitment “new in its ardor, methods and expression” — to take up this project and to cooperate in carrying it out. In accepting this mission, everyone should keep in mind that the vital core of the new evangelization must be a clear and unequivocal proclamation of the person of Jesus Christ, that is, the preaching of his name, his teaching, his life, his promises and the Kingdom which he has gained for us by his Paschal Mystery.

FINAL PRAYER FROM THE APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION CHRISTIFIDELES LAICI

O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church, With joy and wonder we seek to make our own your Magnificat, joining you in your hymn of thankfulness and love. With you we give thanks to God, "whose mercy is from generation to generation", for the exalted vocation and the many forms of mission entrusted to the lay faithful. God has called each of them by name to live his own communion of love and holiness and to be one in the great family of God's children. He has sent them forth to shine with the light of Christ and to communicate the fire of the Spirit in every part of society

Page 12: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

through their life inspired by the gospel. O Virgin of the Magnificat, fill their hearts with a gratitude and enthusiasm for this vocation and mission. With humility and magnanimity you were the "handmaid of the Lord"; give us your unreserved willingness for service to God and the salvation of the world. Open our hearts to the great anticipation of the Kingdom of God and of the proclamation of the Gospel to the whole of creation. Your mother's heart is ever mindful of the many dangers and evils which threaten to overpower men and women in our time. At the same time your heart also takes notice of the many initiatives undertaken for good, the great yearning for values, and the progress achieved in bringing forth the abundant fruits of salvation. O Virgin full of courage, may your spiritual strength and trust in God inspire us, so that we might know how to overcome all the obstacles that we encounter in accomplishing our mission. Teach us to treat the affairs of the world with a real sense of Christian responsibility and a joyful hope of the coming of God's Kingdom, and

Page 13: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

of a "new heaven and a new earth". You who were gathered in prayer with the Apostles in the Cenacle, awaiting the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost, implore his renewed outpouring on all the faithful, men and women alike, so that they might more fully respond to their vocation and mission, as branches engrafted to the true vine, called to bear much fruit for the life of the world. O Virgin Mother, guide and sustain us so that we might always live as true sons and daughters of the Church of your Son. Enable us to do our part in helping to establish on earth the civilization of truth and love, as God wills it, for his glory. Amen Apostles of the Two Hearts will pray this Holy Rosary. 2:00 am Fifth Hour of Eucharistic Adoration

Dedicated to Families, a fertile soil of the New Evangelization Scripture Passage: (Lk 2: 51-52)

“He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them....And Jesus advanced (in) wisdom and age and favor before

God and man.”

Intention: *For all families, the domestic churches: may they be the first place where the Gospel is preached and lived. May families be schools of prayer and of formation in the maturity of the Christian life, that in their wombs the faith may be coherently lived. In the simplicity and efficacy of the love expressed daily through responsibility, may men and women be formed who will

Page 14: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

witness the truth of the Gospel in the entire world. May families be the most fertile soil of the New Evangelization where the seed is planted, grows, and matures in all the hearts, and the civilization of love is built. John Paul II, Letter to Families The gospel of love is the inexhaustible source of all that nourishes the human family as a "communion of persons". In love the whole educational process finds its support and definitive meaning as the mature fruit of the parents' mutual gift. Through the efforts, sufferings and disappointments which are part of every person's education, love is constantly being put to the test. To pass the test, a source of spiritual strength is necessary. This is only found in the One who "loved to the end" (Jn 13:1). Thus education is fully a part of the "civilization of love". It depends on the civilization of love and, in great measure, contributes to its up building. The Church's constant and trusting prayer during the Year of the Family is for the education of man, so that families will persevere in their task of education with courage, trust and hope, in spite of difficulties occasionally so serious as to appear insuperable. The Church prays that the forces of the "civilization of love", which have their source in the love of God, will be triumphant. These are forces which the Church ceaselessly expends for the good of the whole human family (no.16).

The family in fact depends for several reasons on the civilization of love, and finds therein the reasons for its existence as family. And at the same time the family is the centre and the heart of the civilization of love (no. 13).

PRAYER OF JPII FOR THE FAMILY, 1984

Oh God, from whom proceeds all paternity in heaven and earth; Father, you who are Love and Life, bring about the conversion of every human family on earth through your Son Jesus Christ, “born from a woman,” and by means of the Holy Spirit, fountain of divine charity, true shrine of life and love for all generations which are always renewed. Let your grace guide the thoughts and works of spouses towards the good of their families and all the families in the world.

Page 15: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

Let the young generations find in the family a strong support for their humanity and their growth in truth and in love. Let love, corroborated by the grace of the sacrament of matrimony, be shown more strongly than whatever weakness and whatever crisis our families may sometimes experience. We pray through the intercession of the Holy Family, that the Church in all the nations of the earth could fulfill, bearing much fruit, her mission in the family and through the family. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is the way, the truth, and the life forever and ever. Amen. Two Families will pray this Holy Rosary. 3:00 am Sixth Hour of Eucharistic Adoration Dedicated to Missionaries, who like luminous lighthouses they may illuminate

hearts with the light of the Love of God. Scripture Passage: (Jn 12: 21) “We would like to see Jesus.”

Intention: *For all missionaries, men and women, who impelled by the love of Christ, they may go out into the deep of the ocean of the world, amongst great waves and difficulties, to proclaim the Gospel with words and works, to be living channels of the Love of God. Protected under the maternal mantle of the Virgin Mary, they may reach many hearts and take them to the light and the love of Christ so they find in their lives the face of He who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

John Paul II, Encyclical Redemptoris Missio, 31, 34

The Lord Jesus sent his apostles to every person, people and place on earth. In the apostles, the Church received a universal mission-one which knows no boundaries-which involves the communication of salvation in its integrity according to that fullness of life which Christ came to bring (cf. Jn 10:10). The Church was "sent by Christ to reveal and communicate the love of God to all people and nations."

Page 16: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

This mission is one and undivided, having one origin and one final purpose; but within it, there are different tasks and kinds of activity. First, there is the missionary activity which we call mission ad gentes, in reference to the opening words of the Council's decree on this subject. This is one of the Church's fundamental activities: it is essential and never-ending. The Church, in fact, "cannot withdraw from her permanent mission of bringing the Gospel to the multitudes the millions and millions of men and women-who as yet do not know Christ the Redeemer of humanity. In a specific way this is the missionary work which Jesus entrusted and still entrusts each day to his Church." It can thus be characterized as the work of proclaiming Christ and his Gospel, building up the local Church and promoting the values of the kingdom.

Intention:

Page 17: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

*For all Christian young people and children, who clothed with the power of the Spirit and with the courage of love, they are disposed to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, of their families, their schools and their friends and that they may testify with the ardor of their youth, that Christ is the hope and the friend who never disappoints, the only one who satisfies the most authentic desires and concerns of the heart of a young person. Message of the Holy Father Benedict XVI to the young people of the world on the occasion of the XXII World Youth Day 2008, no.7

My dear young friends, as my venerable predecessors Paul VI and John Paul II said on several occasions, to proclaim the Gospel and bear witness to the faith is more necessary than ever today (cf. Redemptoris Missio, 1). There are those who think that to present the precious treasure of faith to people who do not share it means being intolerant towards them, but this is not the case, because to present Christ is not to impose Him (cf. Evangelii Nuntiandi, 80). Moreover, two thousand years ago twelve Apostles gave their lives to make Christ known and loved. Throughout the centuries since then, the Gospel has continued to spread by means of men and women inspired by that same missionary fervor. Today too there is a need for disciples of Christ who give unstintingly of their time and energy to serve the Gospel. There is a need for young people who will allow God’s love to burn within them and who will respond generously to his urgent call, just as many young blesseds and saints did in the past and also in more recent times. In particular, I assure you that the Spirit of Jesus today is inviting you young people to be bearers of the good news of Jesus to your contemporaries. The difficulty that adults undoubtedly find in approaching the sphere of youth in a comprehensible and convincing way could be a sign with which the Spirit is urging you young people to take this task upon yourselves. You know the ideals, the language, and also the wounds, the expectations, and at the same time the desire for goodness felt by your contemporaries. This opens up the vast world of young people’s emotions, work, education, expectations, and suffering ... Each one of you must have the courage to promise the Holy Spirit that you will bring one young person to Jesus Christ in the way you consider best, knowing how to “give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but [to] do it with gentleness and reverence” (cf. 1 Pet 3:15).

In order to achieve this goal, my dear friends, you must be holy and you must be missionaries since we can never separate holiness from mission (cf. Redemptoris Missio, 90). Do not be afraid to become holy missionaries like Saint Francis Xavier who travelled through the Far East proclaiming the Good News until every ounce of his strength was used up, or like Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus who was a missionary even though she never left the Carmelite

Page 18: Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great ... · Prayers, Scripture readings and reflections for the Great Vigil on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and on the Feast

convent. Both of these are “Patrons of the Missions”. Be prepared to put your life on the line in order to enlighten the world with the truth of Christ; to respond with love to hatred and disregard for life; to proclaim the hope of the risen Christ in every corner of the earth.

Intention: *For the entire Church of the Americas, for all of the sons and daughters of the Church of this American Continent, for the entire Family of the Pierced Hearts, so that we may be disposed with generosity, ardor, and joy to go out into the deep through the mountains and oceans of humanity and in this way fulfill the immense mission of being ardent witnesses of the New Evangelization to build a new civilization of love and life. May this mission always be directed by the Maternal Heart of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Luminous Star which guides the bark through the sure and certain paths of the fecundity in the mission of evangelization.

John Paul II, Apostolic Exhortation, Ecclesia in America, 11 Mary is the sure path to our meeting with Christ. Devotion to the Mother of the Lord, when it is genuine, is always an impetus to a life guided by the spirit and values of the Gospel. How can we fail to emphasize the role which belongs to the Virgin Mary in relation to the pilgrim Church in America journeying towards its encounter with the Lord? Indeed, the Most Blessed Virgin “is linked in a special way to the birth of the Church in the history ... of the peoples of America; through Mary they came to encounter the Lord.” Throughout the continent, from the time of the first evangelization, the presence of the Mother of God has been strongly felt, thanks to the efforts of the missionaries. In their preaching, “the Gospel was proclaimed by presenting the Virgin Mary as its highest realization. From the beginning — invoked as Our Lady of Guadalupe — Mary, by her motherly and merciful figure, was a great sign of the closeness of the Father and of Jesus Christ, with whom she invites us to enter into communion.” The appearance of Mary to the native Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac in 1531 had a decisive effect on evangelization. Its influence greatly overflows the boundaries of Mexico, spreading to the whole Continent. America, which historically has been, and still is, a melting-pot of peoples, has recognized in the mestiza face of the Virgin of Tepeyac, “in Blessed Mary of Guadalupe, an impressive example of a perfectly inculturated evangelization”. Consequently, not only in Central and South America, but in North America as well, the Virgin of Guadalupe is venerated as Queen of all America. With the passage of time, pastors and faithful alike have grown increasingly conscious of the role of the Virgin Mary in the evangelization of America. In the prayer composed for the Special Assembly for America of the Synod of Bishops, Holy Mary of Guadalupe is invoked as “Patroness of all America and Star of the first and new evangelization”. In the Basilica of Higuey, 1992 Today as yesterday, Mary must also be the Star of this new evangelization to which the universal Church, and especially the Church in Latin America, feels called in celebration of her 500 years of Christian faith. In fact, the proclamation of the Gospel in the New World was accomplished "by presenting the Virgin Mary as its loftiest fulfillment" (Puebla, n. 282). Throughout these five centuries, Marian devotion has been a fundamental factor of evangelization because Mary is the Gospel transformed into life. She is the highest and most perfect fulfillment of the Christian message, the model that all

must follow. As the Latin American Bishops gathered in Puebla de los Angeles stated, "without Mary, the Gospel is stripped of flesh and blood and is distorted into an ideology, into a spiritualistic rationalism" (Puebla, n. 301).

I hold in my heart the firm hope that she, to whom the strengthening of the faith of the first disciples is owed (cf. Jn 2: 11), will guide with her maternal intercession the Church in this Continent, acquiring for it an effusion of the Holy Spirit as occurred in the birth of the Church (cf. Acts 1: 14), so that the new evangelization may produce a splendid flourishing of Christian life.

I wish to entrust and offer the future of the continent to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ and of the Church. For this reason, I have the joy now of announcing that I have declared that on December 12, in America, the Virgin Mary be celebrated with the liturgical rank of Feast. Oh Mother! You know the paths that the first evangelizers of the New World followed, from the island of Guanahani and Espanola even to the jungles of the Amazon and peaks of the Andes, even reaching the land of Fire down South and the great lakes and mountains of the North. Accompany the Church that labors in american nations, so that it may always be an evangelizer and renew its missionary spirit. Encourage all who dedicate their lives to the cause of Jesus and the extension of His Kingdom. Oh sweet Lady of the Tepeyac, Mother of Guadalupe! We present to you the countless multitudes of faithful who pray to God in America. You, who have entered within its heart, visit and comfort the homes, the parishes, and the dioceses of the entire Continent. Make Christian families educate, in an exemplary manner, their children in the faith of the Church and in the love of the Gospel so that they may be the source of apostolic vocations. Turn your gaze today upon young people and encourage them to walk with Christ. Oh Lady and Mother of America! Confirm the faith of our lay brothers and sisters, so that in all areas of social, professional, cultural and political life they may act in accord with the truth and the new law which Jesus brought to

humanity. Look with mercy on the distress of those suffering from hunger, loneliness, rejection or ignorance. Make us recognize them as your favorite children and give us the fervent charity to help them in their needs.

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of Peace! Save the nations and peoples of this continent. Teach everyone, political leaders and citizens, to live in true freedom and to act according to the requirements of justice and respect for human rights, so that peace may thus be established once and for all. To you, O Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of Jesus and our Mother, belong all the love, honor, glory and endless praise of your American sons and daughters!
