What is prayer?

Prayer is the opening of the mind and heart to God. (Thomas Keating)

The desire to pray is itself a clear sign of the Lord’s presence.

Ninety-five percent of the work is His.

How Prayer “Happens”

The Lord makes the first move:

He knocks.

If we open to Him, He invites Himself “under our roof.”

...but he never breaks the door down.

For those who are sincerely seeking to serve and love God.


Spiritual Director

Real growth in knowledge of God and sensitivity to his will normally requires a good spiritual director.

Essentials & Components


LISTENING

• A good pray-er is above all, a good listener.

• Hearing or listening is a good metaphor for prayer.


QUIET and SOLITUDE

• “God speaks in silences• Only those who are quiet of heart can hear what He says.”


KNOWING ONESELF:

We cannot love what we do not know. (p.93)

With a deep knowledge of God come profound realization of who we really are.

Painful !

Facing honestly who and what we really are (An obvious results of sin in our lives)


PURIFICATION

Disposes ourselves to encounter God

Includes penance & examination of conscience.
