As International Prayer Coordinator for the Church of God, each year, Doug Small hosts a national gathering of state prayer leaders and others in

Cleveland, TN in conjunction with Agree, a convocation coordinated by the International Offices. This training introduces attendees to new resources. New prayer information is shared and reports are given on new and upcoming programs. Participants joined with the Executive Committee and other guests in a unique virtual prayer meeting conducted each evening. Last year, this event engaged almost a half-a-million people. See page 9 for more details.

In 2020, tentatively, we are praying about a ‘global gathering of prayer leaders.’ This would bring together 20-25 regional, multi-national prayer leader-mobilizers. The goal: a prayer trainer-mobilizer for every nation and a prayer trainer-mobilizer for every congregation around the world. Pray about this meeting. Would your congregation sponsor one of the multi-national leaders and adopt that region to assist with prayer mobilization aimed at the harvest? Watch for more information.

Other Conferences and Meetings in 2018It was Doug’s privilege to speak at a number of Church

of God state prayer meetings including: West Virginia with Bishop Dan Hampton; Western North Carolina with Bishop Ken Bell; and Ohio with form Administrative Bishop Les Higgins. Later in the year, he spoke at the Western North Carolina Campmeeting. In addition, it was a joy for Doug to share at the Church of God Southeastern Regional Black Ministries conference – a seven state gathering. Thanks to outgoing leader Andre Hester.

Doug was a part of a number of other significant conferences. One of which was the 47th Annual CMI Global Convention in Fort Wayne, IN. The was a kingdom collaboration – forming authentic apostolic relationships in the church. Doug teamed with the legendary Dutch Sheets, who is an internationally recognized author, gifted teacher, and conference speaker. His international bestseller, Intercessory Prayer, has sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

Another significant conference, the Upper Room Global Outpouring Conference in Griffin, GA with Andre van Zyl, was out of this world. Dr. Tim Hill, General Overseer of the Church of God, shared along with Rick DuBose, General Treasurer of the Assemblies of God. It was Doug’s privilege to speak twice, once on what he has called the coming Apostolic Epoch (watch for the book in March). This was a great conference and a powerful time with Lord.

In addition to these conferences, Doug served the Billy Graham Evangelistic Associate by speaking at their annual Military Chaplain Retreat at The Cove in Asheville, NC. Thanks to their leader, Jack Munday, for that open door.

PROJECT PRAY also led a number of Schools of Prayer with the following pastors: Steve Adams in Laurinburg, NC; Mitchel Bias, Del Barton, WV; Lance Bacon, Hampton, VA; John Butler; and a collage of other churches in Bremen, GA.

Thank you to Steve Sells of Operation Transformation for inviting Doug to speak at the Revitalize 2018 conference hosted at Crosspointe Baptist Church in Concord, NC. This two-day training and equipping conference for pastors and church leaders was led by nationally recognized church revitalizers. The conference included three sessions, six keynote speakers and numerous relevant breakouts with a time for dialogue with the speakers.

Become an active PROJECT PRAY partner. Your support is the means by which we continue ministry. We depend on you. There are no little donors – every

gift counts. Especially, the gift of prayer.

PLATINUM - These partners provide major dollars for the ministry – we could not exist without them. They give annual gifts of $5,000 or more; or regular gifts of $500 or more monthly. They fund international efforts, new books, teaching and training initiatives that need missionary funds.

UNDERWRITER - These major donors keep us on the field, underwriting support for Doug and Barbara and ministry staff. Become an Underwriter by giving an annual gift of $2,500 or more; or committing to give $250 or more monthly.

PSALM 133 - That wonderful psalm about God’s favor and unity, that is at the heart of what we are attempting to do – unify believers in humility and prayer for a manifestation of God’s Presence. Become a member of the Psalm 133 Circle with a gift of $1,000 or more; or a contribution of $100 or more monthly.

GOLD - The bread-and-butter of the ministry. They give an annual gift of $500 or more; or $50 monthly.

SILVER - The mainstay of the ministry, with an annual gift of $250 annually; or $25 monthly.

120 CLUB - PRAYER DONORS - These partners go before us in prayer, opening doors that would otherwise remain closed – from them comes the gifts of God’s provision, His direction, His protection – and that clear sense of God’s presence.

Broadcasting Prayer

Small-Town Pastors ConferenceFor decades, the mega church has been celebrated, but

80 percent of America’s congregations are small and many

of those are rural. The median Sunday Morning attendance

across the nation is 75. A church of 350 is a large church in

the 90th percentile. America is a nation of small churches

led by bi-vocational pastors – and they need help!

In October, PROJECT PRAY, the North Carolina

Southern Baptist office for Bi-vocational Ministries, and

Church of God Prayer Ministries sponsored a conference

in Asheboro, NC for small-town, rural church pastors and

their spouses, along with key congregational leaders.

Lester Evans, Bi-vocational Ministries Leader for

BSCNC in North Carolina, Steve Sells, a specialist in church

revitalization and church health, and Joe Wright, Executive

Director for the Bivocational and Small Church Leaders

Network, partnered in planning this multi-denominational

conference. Hosts included: Boyd Byerly, Pastor of Sunset

Avenue Church of God; Neal Jackson, Pastor of Beulah

Baptist Church; and Travis Scott Pastor of Sandy Creek

Baptist Church (site of Sandy Creek Log Church) where a

revival from 1755-1758 rocked central North Carolina and

birthed as many as a thousand churches.

The workshop themes included prayer, evangelism,

church health/conflict, leadership and discipleship. Special

workshops were offered for lay leaders and pastoral spouses.

The conference inspired and informed, equipped

and encouraged, but most of all, lit a fire for revival and

awakening in pastors, sharing vision and hope that God can

use them to spark a national spiritual awakening! o

Pentecostals PrayIn May, six denominations joined together for the

unique Pentecostals Pray Conference in Eastern North

Carolina. Pastors, prayer leaders, and intercessors attended

this conference hosted at the International Pentecostal

Holiness Church NC Conference Campus in Falcon, NC (just

north of Fayetteville). Coordinated by P. Douglas Small,

under the banner of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches

of North America, the Pentecostals Pray Conference

provided opportunities for vision and training as well as

resources to launch a missional prayer movement.

The conference began with a Prayer Experience on

Friday evening, led by Pastor Carter Conlon, pastor at Times

Square Church in Manhattan, an interdenominational

church with over 10,000 people in attendance, representing

over 100 different nationalities. Pastor Conlon has always

demonstrated a passion for prayer, which is evidenced by

his gathering of 50,000 believers from many denominations

to pray for one hour in the middle of Times Square.

Jeff Farmer, President of the PCCNA and Doug Small

led plenary sessions on Saturday which also included a full

day of workshops. Breakout sessions were offered in six

tracks focused on: pastors; prayer leaders; intercessors;

prayer evangelism-mission; personal/home prayer;

and men, women and children praying. The workshop

speakers and selections were astounding. Topics included:

priority of prayer in a pastor’s life; finding God’s will;

rooftop praying; spiritual mapping; establishing a prayer

dialogue in your city; teaching children to pray; praying for

unreached people groups; prayer life of an intercessor; and

establishing a family altar. o

In 2018, PROJECT PRAY coordinated two regional conferences.

As Prayer Coordinator for the Church of God, Doug Small orchestrated prayer efforts at the Church of God General Assembly in Orlando in July. This year

included a one-day prayer training session, an interactive prayer room, and live interviews from the exhibit hall.

Attendees for the prayer training were introduced to the Praying Church Movement – a group of congregations that have committed to bring prayer to the heart of all they do. Dr. J. David Stephens began the training experience. A collage of ideas and resources were presented laced with moments of prayer. A School of Prayer Associate Presenter training session was also conducted.

The interactive prayer room was full of innovative ideas for enriching prayer. Over 15 prayer stations were displayed including prayer banners; a carpet map of the world and the United States; children’s prayer area; praying for the persecuted church and unreached people groups.

Many sat. Others formed prayer circles. At times, during the day, voices were raised in prayer in passionate, tearful prayer. At other times, the room grew quiet. Never, during the entire assembly, was it empty. Hundreds of intercessors, during the course of the week streamed through the prayer room. They picked up a handful of the many prayer requests that were sent to the room and walked the floor praying.

In the exhibit hall throughout the day, Doug Small interviewed various guests including Ramon Barboa, Chris Cooper, Richard Dial, Ronnie Hepperly, Ken Hill, Loran Livingston, Angel Marcial-Estades, Robert Moore, and Fred Nichols. The interviews were livestreamed on Facebook. The focus was on prayer-evangelism-mission stories and insights showcasing what is happening around the world and throughout the United States as a result of fervent prayer. o

2018 Church of God General Assembly

Order of the Towel

Rev. Peter Thomas, field director for the Church of God in Africa, was inducted into the ‘Order of the Towel’ during the World Missions banquet held

July 30, 2018 at the General Assembly. The recognition was presented by Doug Small. The

honor is bestowed “in recognition of servant leadership and the creation of an ethos of character in leadership.”

In the decade in which Peter Thomas has served as the Church of God field director for much of Africa, 43 nations have felt the temperate passion of a man who has given himself to a continent. For more than two decades, he served as the education director, forging relationships, pressing the character of the church deeper, creating a continent-wide network committed to the complete evangelization of African peoples, and establishing a self-sustaining movement.

In Africa’s leadership conferences, Peter Thomas can often be seen sitting quietly on the sidelines. He leads by serving. He directs by sharing authority and influence. He guides with affirmation and, when necessary, clear, dispassionate, principled engagement.

“There are few people among us who rightly deserve the appellation of ‘apostolic,’” Small stated. Peter Thomas is such a man. “Too often our ideas are clouded by images of strong and dominant personalities. The apostle Paul, on the other hand, often spoke of being weak and gentle among the churches. He forged forward meeting rejection and acceptance.”

“Along his journey, Peter Thomas has been taken hostage and virtually left for dead,” Small concluded. “He has been turned out of countries, injured and wounded, falsely accused and arrested, and in peril that threatened his life. Nevertheless, he has quietly persisted in a mission to see an entire continent set ablaze in the glory of God. Youthful Africa, with an average age of 19, is the rising continent. It is the harvest that could change the world.”

Some of the previous recipients of the Order of the Towel Award have been Dr. Robert Fisher; Dr. Horace Ward; Missionary Margaret Gaines; Former Attorney General, John Ashcroft; and Times Square pastor, Carter Conlon. [Article credited to Faith News] o

Three important church prayer ministry resources

were released in 2018.

Across the nation, less than five percent of

congregations have an organized prayer team and effort.

Less than ten percent have a regular congregation-wide

prayer meeting aimed at personal and congregational

transformation and mission. We confuse the organization

of ‘intercessory’ prayer with the church as a ‘house of

prayer for the nations,’ a pervasive movement out of prayer.

Congregations perceive prayer time as being about ‘prayer

requests’, placing themselves, not God, at the center of

prayer; focusing on His hand, not His face; making prayer

problem centered, not ‘presence’ centered.

The challenge of how to make the transition from a

house of praise and preaching to a house of prayer, with-

out displacing either praise or preaching, is not simple. It

is not single-dimensional. It is not a mere matter of more

prayer activity. It is, in fact, quite complex – multi-faceted.

How can prayer or prayer ministry be anything but simple?

The problem is that we narrow prayer – to: ‘a little talk with

Jesus,’ ‘a chat with a friend,’ ‘spiritual warfare,’ ‘the verbal-

ization of our faith,’ ‘meditation’ – and more. If you focus on

prayer as activity at the church and fail to address personal

prayer and the recovery of the family altar, your efforts will

fail. You will never have a praying church without praying

people and praying homes.

Therefore, there must be resources focused directly on

the praying church. Alive Publications, the publishing arm

of PROJECT PRAY, developed three companion resourc-

es this year to direct congregations in their approach to

prayer. o

THE NEW APOSTOLIC EPOCH Apostolic epochs involve a breaking away,

a new definition and a reorientation. They

refocus kingdom purposes. The apostolic

epoch that we are now entering is the

fulfillment of the desire of Jesus, that his

church be a house of prayer for all nations.

This is the not the mere amplification of prayer as it is often

perceived. It is not the addition of a missing prayer component,

or prayer even as a bountiful additive, a power pack, to what we

are currently doing. It is not the mere deepening or heightening

of the value of prayer; it is a seismic apostolic shift. Through this

assertive sovereign governance of God, He will intervene into

history for missional purposes. It is my sincere belief that we are

on the edge of such a moment again.

MILLENNIALS – THE YOUNG ADULT HARVEST THAT WE DARE NOT MISS

Recapturing the generation that checked

out of church. A dialogue guide between

church leaders and their Millennials. A

dialogue guide for congregations without

any Millennials. Our kids are switching sides. They reason,

that the world has changed so much, so quickly, that if they

are going to survive and thrive, they cannot be encumbered

with religion as they know it. Only God can heal the divide and

reclaim the current generation!

TransformingYOUR PERSONAL PRAYER LIFE

P. DOUGLAS SMALL

Practical exercises to develop a new lens for a balanced prayer life.

TRANSFORMING YOUR PERSONAL PRAYER LIFEThis book is designed to help a serious Christian develop a broader and deeper prayer life. The principles here will seem simple, indeed, they are simple. But their application is far too rare, even among church-going Christians. Prayer demands

practice and an investment. Using the practical exercises included in this volume as a template for spiritual growth you can transform your personal prayer life.

LAMENT: WHEN PRAYER BECOMES TEARS Our churches are full of people in the midst of pain and loss, but they know with all the hip music and praise dancers that weeping will not be honored. Is the church no longer a place that admits those who weep and mourn? Isn’t there a blessing for the mourner promised by Jesus, himself, a word for those who need comfort? Indeed, it is the first blessing among the beatitudes! At some point in worship, a voice should rise that recognizes those in pain, gives language to their heartache, to which they can say, “Amen!”

FEAR OF GOD The call in Scripture for our ‘reverence’ or fear of God is more frequent than the call to ‘love God.’ Without the fear of God, we are blinded by our own shadow, seeing little difference between mortals and the immortal. The more we reverence God, the higher self-worth and self-esteem rise without becoming self-centered, or being blinded by pride and arrogance. Nobility emerges. We see ourselves as God’s children, reflecting His image.

This was the third year of the Virtual Prayer Meeting.

Christians joined other followers and thousands of

churches across the nation in prayer for revival in

the church and awakening in the culture.

In 2018, the call was hosted by 13 denominations or

movements. Thousands joined the prayer call each night

for 22 nights in January. New for 2018, the call was live

streamed on Facebook and the americapray.net website.

The response was overwhelming with social media

connections approaching 700,000.

Special guests included Alton Garrison, Assistant

Superintendent of the Assemblies of God; Tom Phillips,

Vice President of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association;

Kay Horner, the Awakening America Alliance; and Michael

Obi, African Strategic Prayer Leaders Network and many

more. In this sense, the call is historic. It was not one

church or organization, but many, together, praying as

one voice for the same cause – revival and awakening. It

is clear. We seem to be getting the message. Our only hope

is a ‘great awakening’ in the culture and a revival in the

church, and both come on the wings of prayer.

With so many different first-of-the-year prayer

avenues and with limited resources, we regret not to offer

the Virtual Prayer Meeting for 2019. We hope that folks

will engage in the various prayer campaigns promoted

across the nation. One such resource is the Awaken prayer

and fasting guide written by Doug Small and Claude King.

Daily devotions and prayer exercises from the guide will

also be posted on Doug Small’s blog and emailed each

day. Sign-up to receive the daily emails and learn more at:

Agree 18

In January 2018, the Church of God International Offices paused for Agree 18. Each evening, a live-streamed prayer meeting took place coordinated

by Doug Small. The prayer event was a lively collage of information, inspiration and intercession featuring a variety of church leaders, missionaries, local pastors, and students who led in a time of prayer for the nations and world.

Members of the International Executive Committee, the World Missions leadership team, and others, challenged viewers and those present in the studio. Simultaneous intercessors took phone calls, and collected prayer requests from social media.

Engagement among social media and livestream viewers topped over 100,000, a sign of the move of the Spirit that reached beyond the walls of the International Offices. Total engagement approached half-a-million!

In 2019, they will conduct this three-day revival and prayer convocation once again. o

Alive Ministries: PROJECT PRAY | MISSION STATEMENT AND CORE VALUES

Mission StatementAlive Ministries: PROJECT PRAY, the platform for the ministry of P. Douglas Small, is dedicated to serving as a catalyst for a ‘Great Awakening’ in America and the World, through the foundation of transformational prayer mobilization to fulfill our obligation to the Great Commitment, “Pray for all men everywhere …” [which is foundational for the other two ‘Greats’ – the Great Commandment and Commission]; through strategic partnerships in both the church ecclesia, and the church dispora [the marketplace], at the denominational, individual and family, congregation and city levels. Core Values

1. PASSIONOur passion belongs to the Lord – our hearts, minds and might are to glorify Him. God, in Christ, by the enabling Spirit, is to be the ‘love’ of our lives (Luke 10:27).

2. PRAYERThe primary mark of a true believer is that he ‘seeks God’ with all his heart. A believer is marked by a life of prayer – transformational prayer. This is the source of direction and empowerment, the place of grace and growth, both God’s face and hand are sought. We believe personal, at-home, daily, to-be-like-Jesus praying is critical; along with couple’s and family-altar prayer, pervasive prayer groups, and praying churches (Ephesians 6:10-20).

3. GOVERNING PRINCIPLES The Holy Scriptures, we believe, are fully inspired and ordained by God. They inform our values. Renew our mind. Clarify our decision process. Provide a lens for interpretation of our world. They reprove and correct, edify and strengthen. They provide the basis of our authority as a believer (2 Timothy 3:16).

4. GUIDING PHILOSOPHYWe believe the primary call of the church is worshipful communion with God, out of which flows mission – the call to be ‘a house of prayer (Godward in orientation) for the nations (missional in engagement)!’ Therefore, we believe that the ‘reformation’ is still on, that God is restoring his Church. That the church must be not only a place of worship and nurture, but also a place of mission; that it is not designed merely ‘for us’ to receive ministry, but it is to be a center from which ministry flows to the unreached (Ephesians 2:10).

5. CRITICAL PERSPECTIVEWe recognize that the American culture is not organized primarily by ethnic and tribal bonds, but by ‘professional tribes’ – each with their own markings, ranks and standards, territories inside our culture and cities; and to reach the nation, we must evangelize inside these tribes; which means awakening and training a new missionary force, made up of current Christians; and this means mobilizing the church ‘disapora’ – sown and scattered in the Marketplace. It means a new level of ownership in terms of ‘mission’ by the Nehemiah [marketplace] stream in partnership with the Ezra [pastors and clergy] stream.

6. PEOPLE We believe God loves all people – and wants all men to be saved. Each person bears the image of God, marred by sin, and salvation launches a process of personal redemption; and a part of that restorative journey is the consecration of all the person is to God – talents and native abilities, spiritual gifts and personality, learned skills and life experiences – nothing is wasted. The goal is not merely a saved people, but an engaged people. Our greatest joy is found only in our full abandonment in worship and service to God, offered sacrificially, but in complete liberty (Luke 10:27).

7. FAMILYWe believe the family – a man, woman and children – are the basic building block of community, whether faith, city-county, or nation. And as the family goes – so goes community. Further, we believe that family is the imprint of Trinity: Father, Son and Spirit (who births, nurtures, comforts); equal in value and vitality, yet different in function; and therefore, that not only does humanity, the individual, bear the image of God, but family does as well; that it is a sacred definitive design. Finally, that fathers are critical not only to the family, but to the nation as spiritual leaders; and that when nations err, it is the turning of the hearts of fathers that most quickly averts judgment. Godly fathers are irreplaceable in the divine design.

8. PRIORITYWe believe the Great Commission is not an option – but the Lord’s final command. The Church must fulfill its obligation ‘and then shall the end come.’ Around the throne are to be gathered, representatives of every tribe and tongue, every people group and nation. It is within our grasp. We are not to make converts – but disciples. The good news must be shared with ‘everyone everywhere’ in their language and cultural context. (Matthew 28:18-20).

9. CONCERNING PARTNERSHIPThe final harvest must be reached by the ‘people of God’ in some unified manner. The essence of our message is reconciliation – so a divided church is a contradiction. Unity is the missing partner to the message of God’s love. Proclamation is not enough; incarnation is essential. God desires for His church to be one. Only through a united church will Jesus be appropriately revealed to the watching world. This requires authenticity in relationships and genuine partnerships that honor God and synergize ministry (John 17).

10. GREAT AWAKENINGThere is a line of egregious sin that a nation crosses – from which there is no retreat but certain judgment. We believe America is now on the ‘warning track’ and increasing peril lies ahead if the nation does not turn back to God. That revival in the church and a corollary spiritual awakening in the whole of culture is essential – and that it is our only hope. Nations, as well as individuals, cities and states, must repent – and call a ‘Solemn Assembly.’ But we doubt the resolve of either the Executive, Representative/Legislative or Judicial branches of Government to do such a thing. Therefore, we rely on the promise of II Chronicles 7:14 – and pray for a nation-wide, grass-roots movement of deep humility that is expressed in repentance and turning to holiness by God’s people. o
