Respect Life

New Jersey’s Assisted Suicide law went into effect August 1st.

Bishop James Checchio of Metuchen, NJ issued a renewed condemnation of assisted suicide. “Passage of the law points to the utter failure of government, and indeed all society, to care truly, authentically and humanely for the suffering and vulnerable in our midst, especially those living with an incurable disease as well as the frail elderly and those living with disabilities.” “With this law there will be further desensitization of the value of human life. Catholics are called to show a different approach to death and the dying; one which accompanies every person as they are dying and allows them to love and to be loved to the very end.” While this practice is legal in NJ, it remains gravely immoral.

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
