INTRODUCTION Electricity is now essential
commodity in developing and even in under developed countries.
Role of Design of substation is not only to take care the technology being used, standards adopted and safety but also it is supposed to take care the fund ( CAPEX and incurring for maint ) without compromising need of customers.

SUB-STATION DESIGN
Design of sub-station is an art of science.Selection of
bus switching scheme, technology of equipments etc
plays important role in expenditure incurred during
installation and maintenace, easiness in construction,
and maintenance,expertise required, training required
etc.
All such aspects should be kept into consideration while
design the SS for under developed countries /SS in rural
areas.

5
General aspects of SS design where land
requriement is low.
When high reliability is required 2 or more bus
system is used
Where lower reliability can be afforded , on the
contrary cost saving is more imp in that case,
single bus is preferred.
When the station is required to accommodate in
smaller area, two options can be thought

6
Solution for less land requirement
Gas Insulated switchgear (GIS)
Mixed technology switchgear (MTS)

7
Other solution
Other option possible is compact
AIS substation
One such case study is
presented here to share

CRITERIEON FOR SELECTING
COMPACT AIS
Requirment of land is less.
Cost is less compared to GIS
Ease of installation and maintenance
Lesser handling of SF6 gas ( possibility of
harming environmental is less)
Lesser training required for personnel.

CASE STUDY –WEST AFRICAN
UTILITY COMPACT AIS Here the case study is shared for SS of
Liberia ( West Africa) having following
requirements
4 nos of 66kV line bays
2 nos of 66/11kV transformer bays
1 66kV bus with sectionalizer
2 nos of 66kV spare bays
Entire need is fulfilled in a switchyard with area
60x35 m each 66kV bay has width of 8.0 m

Conclusion
Selection of technology with respect to the
available financial and human resources should
be made.
Compact AIS is more economical than GIS or
MTS.
Easy for construction
Easy for Maintenance
Lesser training to engineers /operators required
Study of VFTO is eliminated ( which is required
in case of GIS )
