Celebrating Four Years!This month we celebrate our fourth

year of publishing the Praise Reporter.The number four represents Creation

and Creative works. I am reminded of Genesis when God

took nothing and made something. The earth was void and darkness was upon the face of the deep and God spoke a Word to bring light to His dark situation.

Well, four years ago, I lost my last job at a publishing company. With a wife and a new baby, things looked dark. But God spoke a Word to me and told me to start a news paper “The Praise Reporter.” In less than 30 days, the first edition was released and we have become one of the most well respected publications in our city. Our first advertiser was New Cov-enant Believers’ Church under the pas-torship of Bishop Howard Tillman. They have supported us continuously.

Since then, we have expanded to reach over 50,000 readers, distribute papers in Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton and Springfield; have developed relation-ships with countless businesses, social ser-vice agencies, entertainers, ministries and readers across the country.

This journey has not been a easy ride. In fact it has been the most difficult of my life. I have had to learn (and am still learn-ing) how to follow the voice of God.

In this next year I just wanted to encourage someone to follow their dream. My wife spoke at our church recently a message entitled “I Am Approaching My Window of Opportunity.” God is bring a flood of opportunity to the earth. This flood will wash away all of the things in your past that seemingly would prevent you from reaching your dreams. Besides

“living right” and obeying the voice of the Lord, Noah had to build an Ark. His ark was the vehicle that carried him to his next place of des-tiny. Though Noah had favor with God, he still had to create what God told him to in order to get to where God wanted to take him. I encour-age you to begin to build what God said and expect him to change your whole life and put you in the place you have always dreamed of.

We are still building and mov-ing forward. So many readers, pastors, churches, businesses and organizations have expressed their appreciation for the publication and the information it shares. And we thank you all for assisting us in carrying out this tremendous vision.

Finally, this month, my family cel-ebrates our second year as members of United Ministries Church in Columbus, Ohio. I love my Church! Apostle Roderick A. Williams and Prophetess Taketa Wil-liams have in addition to supporting our publication, have embraced us, poured into us and have given us God’s living word that is the fuel to keep us moving forward.

Today’s headlines cover a range of issues, challenges and problems in a cul-ture that promotes me-first, microwave-quick solutions and moral decay.

Where is the church? Not the pious, foot stomping, hand clapping, praise-your-way through church, but the body of Christ found in Matthew 15:13-16 that is clear of its position, sure of its purpose and preparing her people to disciple.

From Tuesday, July 14 – Sunday, July 19, New Covenant Believers’ Church is standing up to be the ‘light on the hill’ and placing itself in the middle of the culture war with its annual Heal-ing a Generation Conference. Speakers

will eradicate ignorance through educa-tion, engage with relatable issues and empower attendees with valuable prin-ciples. Topics like family violence and abuse are pulled from today’s head-lines and speakers like Les Brown and Evangelist Sandra Riley will encourage conference attendees to be proactive in their families, their communities and a dying world.

In fact, inviting someone to Healing a Generation is one way to combat the prevailing culture of ‘it’s okay if I say it’s okay.’

“We want to use this conference as an evangelistic opportunity for our

members to get nonbelievers or individ-uals who are not saved to attend,” said conference organizer, Kendrea Moorer.

Believers will also benefit from the information sharing available this year. In recent months, Bishop Tillman repeat-edly has stressed the power of influence available to each person. Attending the conference and absorbing the infor-mation presented is an opportunity to expand their influence.

The cliché that knowledge is power is true and Biblical. (See Hosea 4:6)

“Take Tuesday Night’s theme [fam-ily violence & abuse] for instance,” said Moorer. “No, you may not have been physically abused by a spouse, but what will you say to another person that you run into (or become friends with) that may be dealing with this? How will you minister to them? What will you say as a Believer? We have to be equipped with knowledge to help others get to their harvest.”

Healing a Generation is about more than introducing someone to Christ. This year its also about serving some-one with the love of Christ and that love compelling them to come to Him. The theme, “Preparing for the Harvest” brings to mind the work a gardener puts into their plot, in order to experience the unabashed joy of flowers or vegetables flourishing.

The third annual “Faith In Action Sunday” -- which challenges churches to literally close their doors on a Sunday morning and go out and serve their communities -- will take place on Oct. 11 this year.

“Faith in Action” was developed by World Vision, Zondervan and Outreach, Inc. in 2007 to encourage churches, min-istries and small groups to serve and meet practical needs in their local com-munities.

The “Faith in Action” movement is

quickly becoming a viral online com-munity of service-minded churches, col-lecting photos, videos and testimonies via RSS feeds from other popular sites, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. A new web site -- www.putyourfaithi-naction.org -- has been developed to support this growing movement.

“Faith in Action” also utilizes an online social network to connect churches with one another’s stories and successes. Participants can find more resources to equip their congregations for service at www.putyourfaithinac-tion.org/interact.

John Ortberg, best-selling author and pastor, is the national spokesman for “Faith in Action.” He called the ini-tiative “a dynamic program that galva-nizes your congregation to be the hands and feet of Jesus in meeting real needs in your local community.”

Richard Stearns, president for World Vision, agreed. “’Faith in Action’ is a powerful way to demonstrate the love of Jesus to our neighbors,” he said.

“Churches all over the U.S. -- even churches that are financially stressed themselves -- have made a genuine dif-ference to their struggling and hurting neighbors with the ‘Faith in Action’ pro-gram,” said Eric Abel, vice president of marketing for Outreach, Inc.

Churches have organized food drives and helped the elderly and needy with home repairs. Some groups cleaned and landscaped public areas or private homes. Some maintained women’s or homeless shelters. And one

Free, self-sufficient, independent!! Our country recently celebrated Inde-pendence Day, commonly known as July 4. This day commemorates The United States Declaration of Independence from Great Britain when the thirteen American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, declared themselves independent; no lon-ger a part of the British Empire. Writ-ten primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence was voted on by the congress on July 2, 1776 and was formally adopted on July 4, 1776. An important part of this historic document explains it is self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Self evident infers that one under-stands the statement as true without proof, that we were endowed by the creator of the world with certain rights, including, “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This majestic phrase is based on the writings of English writer John Locke, who expressed that “no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions.”

My love and loyalty for my native country cannot be questioned. I can think of no other place on earth that I would rather live and I am eternally grateful for

the freedom afforded me by the noble words of the U.S. Constitution. But I claim dependence on and allegiance to God, who is my joy and the source of my strength. This grandiose, imposing document; this Declaration of Indepen-dence, not only guarantees me the right to pursue happiness, it guarantees my right to choose God as the source of my happi-ness. I celebrate my dependence on Him. God told the prophet Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” This means I too belong to God and I get to choose whether or not I want to be dependent on Him.

An essential part of our dependence on God is our prayer life and a willing-ness to trust him even when He does not seem evident. Possibly every Christian has experienced periods of doubt when it seems as if God is either far away or not interested in what is happening to us. We have to remember that there may also be times when we are not seeking God, when we’re putting our trust in people. He promised that we will find Him when we seek Him with all of our hearts.

Gail Rodgers, wife, mother, busi-nesswoman and a pastor to women says when we live our lives with prayer on the fringe we are really telling God that we

don’t trust Him. Often with our lips we declare trust but with our lives we show that we really don’t believe He will see us through. Rodgers recommends ask-ing ourselves the hard questions: Do we really trust God to have our best interest at heart?

Do we really believe He will strengthen each day to walk where we need to walk - even in the dark and the silence?

She advises us to choose to increase our trust in God and focus on prayer rather than leaving prayer on the fringes of our lives. Choose to trust God. Trust Him to do what he says he will do. While our country could conceivably let us down we know that we can always depend on our Heavenly Father.

Whether we realize it or not, we are all imperfect vessels in need of the Mas-ter Potter to piece together our broken parts. When we admit we can’t do it all ourselves He will gladly walk us through the difficult places and give us the times of refreshing that we desperately need. St. Augustine of Hippo sums up our pur-pose quite simply: “Thou hast created us for Thyself, and our heart is not quiet [is restless] until it rests in Thee.” Comments may be sent to [email protected].

You may not think much about organ donation, but in every church community, there are people who have been touched by it. Bernetta Calloway,

a member at Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church, has been profoundly impacted by donation – it changed her life for-ever.

On Christmas Day in 1998 Bernet-ta’s son, Joey Johnson, gave the ultimate gift. He saved five lives after he died suddenly at the age of 19.

“Christmas Day is usually a time of joy and celebration for our family,” said Calloway, “but that day brought more sorrow than we ever experienced.”

A recent graduate from Marion Franklin High School, Joey had a prom-ising future. He was outgoing and active in martial arts. “He was incredibly lov-ing,” said Calloway, “he brought energy and happiness to our lives.”

The night Joey died; doctors did everything they could to save his life. “By the time we arrived, it was too late,”

said Calloway. Joey was a registered organ and tissue donor, a decision his mother said was in line with the way he lived his life.

“Losing Joey was devastating, but knowing that he helped others through death has been a comfort to us all,” said Calloway. She credits her faith with helping her through the tragedy, “With-out faith, I wouldn’t have made it.”

Calloway and her family have become advocates for organ donation since Joey’s death. She volunteers with Lifeline of Ohio to share the importance of organ and tissue donation and pro-motes the cause in the African American community. “Many people in our com-munity think ‘Whatever I came with, I’m taking with me.’ We need to get away from that notion because we can make

(NAPSI)- A dose of informa-tion could be one of the keys to help-ing women diagnose and treat lupus sooner.

Lupus is a serious national health problem, affecting an estimated 322,000 Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Ninety percent of those diagnosed are women, and it is three times more com-mon among minority women.

According to an Ad Council survey, about 80 percent of women in the U.S. say they have little or no knowledge of lupus. That lack of knowledge could mean women may not catch the disease at its earliest and most treatable stage.

Price of WMOJ 103 Cincinnati, Celebrity Judges were Gospel Artist Byron Cage, CCLI Rep. and former CEO of Gospel-centric Records Vicki Mack Lataillade, Crystal Aiken 2008 BET Sunday Best Winner, Gospel Dream Winner Melinda Watts, and with a panel of judges of this caliber, you know the Artist partici-pating in the Showcase were nervous, Tyshawn Colquitt, age 14, of Cincin-nati, Ohio who is also a student at the Performing Arts School gave a rous-ing version of Wade in the Water said “ sometimes I am nervous but when I get up on the stage I just want to share the gift God has given me.” Each ministry (no I do not call them Acts or Performers) because when they got up on stage each ministry delivered and shared their gifts with us, this showcase had a little of everything from Spoken word, Mimes, to foot stomping sing-ing or should I say sanging ??? Special Shout out to Speak Life Cincinnati Ohio, anointed Sons of God who took us back to Church, 2008 New Artist Winners COGIC, Eric Thomas who tore the room up with his version of the Lord’s Prayer but the 2009 1st Place Winner came from Indianapolis Indiana, congratulations to James Andrew and New Season , and that was just the 1st day

Marvin Sapp, Tye Tribett, Sunday Best Crystal Aiken and Gospel Dream win-ner Melinda Watts held at Kings Island which was part of the whole three-day I Hear Music in The Air experience, was a day of Family, and when you put the words Amusement Park, Gospel Music, and Worshippers together you Have no choice but to have a great time, every-place you looked you saw people hav-ing fun enjoying not only the Artist but enjoying the atmosphere that was set.

The conference ended with an elegant Gala held at the Sharonville Sheraton Hotel honoring the 2009 I Hear Music In the Air Honorees Paul and Cynthia Booth who own six McDonald Franchises and use their blessings to bless others and Steve and the Late Bar-bara Reece who own Reece and Reece Corporation along with Integrity Hall and has been a part of the Cincinnati Political and Community Services for

over 40 years. The keynote speaker for the evening was none other then Stellar Award Winning Dorinda Clark Cole of the famed Clark Sisters , people came dressed to the nines and the Ballroom was set up so elegantly, classical music was provided by Myron Brown Crystal Aiken and the 2009 Showcase runner –up Eric Thomas ushered in the Holy Spirit before Dorinda Clark Cole got up and just set the room on fire not only can Dorinda sing but she can Preach that woman is truly anointed. The Gala was a perfect way to end an amazing week-end, Hostess Tracey Artis encouraged

everyone to attend the GospelFest July 30th at the Duke Energy Convention Center at 7pm featuring such artist like Shirley Caeser, Yolanda Adams, Byron Cage, Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr Sing-ers, J. Moss, Bishop Paul Morton and Many more.

Overall as Host Bobby Artis said “You need to attend the whole 3 days of events so that you can get all the impor-tant information and exposure that the conference does offer.” And I agree, if you are in Leadership, Church Music Director, Aspiring Gospel Artist, or just love to Worship this is a conference you want to participate in you get a chance to see the Gospel Artist , but more importantly they share the ins and outs of the Gospel Music Industry .

Scotto Sunday Sauce With Meatballs Prep: 25 minutesCook: 30 minutesChill: 15 minutesStand: 5 minutesMakes: 6 servings 1/2 cup olive oil 3 large onions, diced (about 3 cups) 2 tablespoons minced garlic 6 cups Prego Flavored with Meat Italian Sauce 4 fresh basil leaves, chopped 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper 6 slices thawed Pepperidge Farm Texas Toast Garlic, diced

1/2 cup whole milk 1 1/2 pounds ground beef 2 eggs 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Heat 1/4 cup oil in a 6-quart saucepot over medium heat. Add 2 cups onions and garlic and cook until onion is tender. Stir sauce, basil and red pepper in saucepot. Remove saucepot from heat.

Place toast into large bowl. Pour milk over toast. Stir and press toast into milk to coat. Let stand for 5 minutes.

Add beef, remaining onions, eggs and cheese to toast mixture. Mix beef mixture thoroughly and shape firmly into 12 (3-inch) meatballs.

Place meatballs onto a baking sheet. Cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes.

Heat remaining oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add meatballs in batches and cook until well browned.

Add meatballs to sauce mixture. Cook over medium heat for 15 minutes or until meatballs are cooked through.

Penne Alla Fresco With Texas Toast Prep: 5 minutesCook: 25 minutesMakes: 6 servings 16 ounces uncooked penne pasta 1 package (11.25 ounces) Pepperidge Farm Texas Toast Garlic 3 cups Prego Three Cheese Italian Sauce 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheesePreheat oven to 425°F for toast.

Cook pasta according to package directions in 4-quart saucepan. Drain pasta well in colander and return to saucepan.

Heat sauce in 2-quart saucepan over medium-high heat to a boil. Stir in cream and red pepper. Reduce heat to low. Cook until sauce mixture is hot and bubbling.

Meanwhile, prepare toast according to package directions. Pour sauce mixture over pasta and toss to coat. Sprinkle with cheese. Serve with toast.

Chicken Italiano With Garlic Bread Prep: 15 minutesCook: 40 minutesMakes: 6 servings 3 pounds bone-in chicken parts 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1cupall-purposeflour 3/4 cup olive oil 1 small onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 cups Prego Italian Sausage and Garlic Italian sauce 1 package (10 ounces) Pepperidge Farm Garlic Bread Preheat oven to 40 http://praise-ecards.com/index.php?step=sendcard&ec_id=17 0°F for bread.

Season chicken with black pepper. Coat chicken with flour.

Heat oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Cook chicken in batches until well browned on all sides. Remove chicken from skillet.

Pour off all but 2 tablespoons oil from skillet. Reduce heat to low. Add onion and garlic and cook until onion is tender.

Stir sauce in skillet. Return chicken to skillet. Cover and cook 15 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.

Meanwhile, bake bread according to package directions.

Cut bread into 2-inch diagonal slices and serve with chicken.

Columbus, Ohio has a three-point plan that includes aggressive job cre-ation, a 10-year government reform plan that will save between $100 million and $150 million; and raising new revenue. If all three parts of the plan are enacted, we can maintain our core city services and preserve our quality of life.

Residents will be asked Aug. 4 to vote on a proposed half-penny pro-posed revenue increase that is fair to all Columbus taxpayers.

Fifty-three percent would be paid for by non-residents who work in Columbus and benefit from city services during the workweek.

Those with low incomes will pay the least and those without income will pay nothing at all. Also, income of res-idents younger than 18, savings and investment income, pensions, military pay, and veterans’ benefits are exempted from city income taxes. For a middle-class Columbus household making

$40,000 a year, it would cost less than $17 a month.

The city has not had an income tax increase since 1982—and Columbus cannot deliver 21st Century services on a 27-year-old revenue model. While other Ohio cities have cut public safety forces and seen considerable decreases in population, Columbus has grown while keeping its level of police and fire protection in line with its population.

If this revenue increase is success-ful, Columbus can continue to deliver the services our residents expect and deserve, while continuing to attract and retain jobs. We will be able to keep our neighborhoods safe with a strong police presence, fire protection, basic health and emergency services. And with new revenue we can keep our neighborhoods strong with code enforcement and regu-lar refuse collection.

Columbus has been a national example of conservative budgeting, as

evidenced by the fact it has the high-est bond rating of any major city in America. Also, Mayor Coleman and City Council have cut $160 million from the cost of doing business as usual since 2001. And Columbus’ civilian workforce is down 32 percent from when Mayor Coleman took office in 2000.

The City of Columbus’ income tax rate is currently equal to the lowest of the 10 big cities in Ohio and is compa-rable to surrounding central Ohio com-munities. Compared to other American cities, Columbus has an average over-all tax rate, and would remain in the median average even if the half-penny increase is enacted.

Due to budget realities, the City is asking residents to approve a tax increase August 4. The mayor is required by City Charter to submit his proposed budget in November. By put-ting this measure on the August ballot, the mayor, and council will have time

to make responsible budget decisions based on the results of the vote.

Columbus maintains a separate capital fund to pay for critical neighbor-hood infrastructure projects while main-taining a general fund to pay for city operations. As a chronic autoimmune disease, lupus causes the immune system to mis-takenly attack the body’s own healthy cells and tissue as though they were foreign invaders. Without intervention, the condition can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, disability and in many cases, death.

In an effort to raise awareness among women (ages 18-44) who are at greatest risk, the Ad Council and U.S. Department of Health & Human Ser-vices (HHS) Office on Women’s Health launched a national PSA campaign in English and Spanish to address lupus and communicate the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. The cam-paign includes ads that feature actual women who have been diagnosed with lupus portraying women who are expe-riencing symptoms of the disease but have not yet asked their doctors or local community health centers, “Could I have lupus?”

“Despite its prevalence in the U.S.,

lupus is rarely discussed and often misunderstood among women in our country,” explains Dr. Wanda K. Jones, deputy assistant secretary for women’s health at HHS.

The disease can have a wide range of symptoms including fatigue, hair loss, painful or swollen joints, fever, skin rashes and kidney problems. However, in the majority of people who are living with lupus, early and effective treatment can minimize symptoms, reduce inflam-mation and pain, help maintain normal functions and prevent the development of serious complications.

The PSAs conclude with the tagline, “For answers. For support. For hope.” Women are directed to a new interactive Web site, www.couldIhavelupus.gov, or to a toll-free number (1-800-994-9662), to learn about symptoms and treatment options and to access local resources. The site encourages visitors to upload their personal stories and post com-ments in an effort to initiate a dialogue

about the disease.“The campaign can significantly

increase awareness and help women achieve early diagnosis, which will give them the greatest chance for improved health and long-term survival,” says Dr. Jones.

“First Lady Michele Obama recently went on national television asking Americans to volunteer in their local communities. ‘Faith in Action’ is a great way to show the world that service is not just a one-time initiative, but for fol-lowers of Jesus Christ, is a way of life,” he said.

“I recommend ‘Faith in Action’ to any church that wants to mobilize for greater community outreach,” said John O’Neal, pastor of Grace Lutheran

Church in Des Moines, Wash., one of the churches that participated in “Faith in Action Sunday” in 2008.
