Dear Prairie Children Preschool Families, Happy New Year! I hope that you enjoyed a relaxing holiday break. Now that we are back to school, the PTA is busy planning the second half of our year. We have more fun activities coming up, including the Sweetheart Dance on February 8. It is so fun to see the kids dressed up and dancing with their parents and friends. Be sure to see inside the newsletter for more details! Additionally we will soon have information about voting on our updated bylaws and electing next year’s PTA Executive Committee. Have a wonderful January! Sincerely, Erin Brambilla PTA President
Cold and Flu Season Information
The flu season will reach its peak in January and February. With that in mind, here are some helpful
tips from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
How is the flu spread?
The flu virus is spread mainly through person to person contact via coughing, sneezing, or
touching an infected object and then touching your mouth, eyes or nose.
Infected persons are able to spread the virus one day BEFORE symptoms as well as 5-6 days
AFTER becoming sick. (Young children even have the capability to infect others for longer than
5-7 days.)
How do I tell the difference between a cold and the flu?
Both are respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. In general, the flu is
worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and
dry cough are more common and intense. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or
stuffy nose. Also, children with the flu may have vomiting and/or diarrhea.
Most people recover in a few days to less than 2 weeks. However, some may develop
complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and ear and sinus infections.
How can I prevent catching the flu?
Take the time to get a flu vaccine (recommended for everyone age 6 months or older).
Maintain the following healthy habits daily:
o Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
o Wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand gel frequently.
o Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
o Routinely clean frequently touched objects such as: door knobs, light switches,
computer keyboards and phones.
What should I do if my child becomes sick with the flu?
Allow them to rest and limit contact with others as much as possible by keeping the child home
from school until they are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing
medications).
Have them drink plenty of water and other clear liquids to prevent dehydration.
Treat their fever and cough with age/weight appropriate over-the-counter medications.
