Working so closely with schools and associated services has given Jane a clear understanding of the priorities of schools as the employer and also of the professional development needs and aspirations of School Support Staff as employees. She is committed to encouraging, developing and enabling professionalism across the whole school work force and also passionately committed to the development of a culture of life-long learning in all adults supporting the education of our children.

Jane has enjoyed working as an associate with KAA (Karen Ardley Associates) immensely over the last three years both in the UK and abroad and is looking forward to continuing that relationship.

Jane Walton: Aspiring to meet Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) standards.

Thursday 09:45 – 11:00 AND CONTINUES 11:30 – 12:45  andFriday 12:45 – 14:00 AND CONTINUES 14:30 – 15:45

This two and a half hour practical session looking at Higher Level Teaching Assistant self-assessment which will provide an opportunity for Teaching Assistants to discuss, explore and begin to self-assess

against the HLTA standards. Initially, the workshop will focus on your own skills, knowledge and experience to help you to explore the rigorous requirements of the standards. Subsequently the workshop will support you to identify training and development needs that present themselves in relation to the standards and enable you to consider the practicalities of what needs to be undertaken to bridge any identified gaps in order to fully meet each standard. This workshop will also provide a personalised opportunity for Teaching Assistants to rehearse a PDR using specific standards to help them explore what they and others are doing that can be of mutual benefit and encouragement.

Jane Walton: Supporting TAs to promote and encourage behaviours for learning.

Thursday 13:45 – 15:00 AND CONTINUES 15:30 – 16:45andFriday 08:45 – 10:00 AND CONTINUES 10:30 – 11:45

This two and half hour practical session will be looking at the key topic of developing skills and strategies to promote successful behaviour and communication. Behaviour management is linked to how we communicate what we want and expect from pupils. In the modern classroom where the presence of additional adults is commonplace and classroom management is linked to how successfully the adult partnerships and relationship dynamics between teacher and TA are established and developed so that there is a cohesion in the methods used to manage the classroom successfully and keep pupils on task and address off-task behaviours. There will be some video input for participants to draw on and activities will be practical requiring full delegate participation to support you to develop skills that enable successful outcomes. We will be looking at using strategies and scripts that encourage pupils to choose more positive behaviours thereby avoiding flashpoints, conflicts embarrassing situations where staff make empty threats that they cannot really follow up on.

Alan Cross: Assessment for Excellent Primary Science

Thursday 13:45 – 15:00 AND CONTINUES 15:30 – 16:45andFriday 08:45 – 10:00 AND CONTINUES 10:30 – 11:45

Science can be challenging and great fun for primary pupils.

This seminar will provide a clear rationale and a very practical approach to assessment of science in primary classrooms. It will demonstrate creative approaches to the assessment of primary science.

As the very best measure of a good science lesson is the extent to which learners have learned the science, this seminar will examine a number of approaches which can be taken to ensure that if difficulties are encountered by learners, appropriate challenges can be identified.

Assessment will be seen as a shared task involving the teacher and the learners.

Learners benefit from enthusiastic teachers. This seminar will encourage you to look again at teaching methods you use in science classes. It will be practical and will explore options for recording sound and images, children as researchers, playground science, dance/drama, children’s literature, stories, IT and approaches to science enquiry (working scientifically).

Many claims have been made about the power of technology to transform learning: the Interactive whiteboard and the tablet (iPad) being two of the latest.

From data logging to digital microscopes and with challenging activities such as modelling with spreadsheets, to making and solving a tarsia, lots of applications will be discussed and demonstrated. See Joseph Priestley and Antoine Lavoisier debate their theories of burning and read about the disgraceful behaviour of the Royal Society on the 7th February 1863.

In this session, there should be something new for everyone and lots of ideas to try with your students.

James Nicholson: Supporting excellent teaching - making mathematics more real in the secondary classroom

Thursday 09:45 – 11:00 AND CONTINUES 11:30 – 12:45 and Friday 12:45 – 14:00 AND CONTINUES 14:30 – 15:45

This seminar will look at ways of integrating contexts fully into teaching mathematics - this is one of the aspects the curriculum and assessment bodies are looking at improving in the next round of changes.

The seminar will consider the example of quadratics (which spans most of secondary level maths) and look at it in some detail - with resources for teaching and also contextual examples for use with classes: since a straight line is the first model for describing many physical situations, the quadratic should be the second model in many cases.

Delegates will get the opportunity to work with this approach in some other areas like trigonometry, differential equations, and probability as to how similar principles can be applied across the curriculum to make the teaching and learning of mathematics much more real in the secondary classroom.

The use of a laptop (or tablet) during the seminar will be an advantage, as it will allow delegates to work with the electronic resources provided by the tutor. If your school or college uses Autograph, it would be good to have it installed on the computer/tablet you will be working with.

Andy Frapwell: Improving learning and progress in Primary PE - Assessment as a catalyst for change

Friday 12:45 – 14:00 AND CONTINUES 14:30 – 15:45

Research over the last 15 years widely accepts that the most important role of teaching is to raise pupils’ achievement. This shift views good teaching, as being centred on the facilitation of pupil learning and progress. The focus of attention is firmly upon the pupil, and teacher activity is of value or of interest only in respect of what it enables pupils to achieve.

Page 21: Prague COBIS Conference 2014€¦ · Prague COBIS Conference 2014 for Teachers, Leaders and Support Staff ‘Supporting Excellent Teaching – Enabling Great Learning’ 20th and

Prague COBIS Conference 2014 – Page 40 Prague COBIS Conference 2014 – Page 41

This has resulted in a de-emphasis on the grading function of assessment and a re-emphasis on the learning function. As well as updating delegates on the National Curriculum 2014 changes, this workshop will therefore consider: How we use assessment to help pupils learn more and progress quicker in Physical Education?; the positive impact learning and progress in PE can have on learning and progress in other subjects; and assessment as a key driver for evolving our curriculum and teaching.

Andy Frapwell: The future of assessment in Secondary PE - shaping teaching, learning and curriculum

Thursday 13:45 – 15:00 AND CONTINUES 15:30 – 16:45

On the 11 September 2013 the slimmed-down English National Curriculum for 2014 was released. A key feature of the Key Stage 1-4 Programme of Study for Physical Education is the integrated attainment target, and the removal of the current system of level descriptors.

This workshop will explore the rationale for this change in the context of assessment practice and reform globally; assessment that is fit for purpose; update delegates on the National Curriculum for 2014; and seek to explore two fundamental assessment questions: “How are we doing?” and “How can we do it better?” in relation to our curriculum and teaching & learning practice.

Developing strong leadership skills takes time, support and plenty of self-reflection. Operational demands make this difficult and leaders find themselves learning many of their skills by trial and error, under pressure.

This workshop gives leaders at all levels the opportunity to consider their strengths and how to build on them. The focus is on developing a robust toolkit of approaches that can be used to manage both the team and themselves. Themes of the seminar include:

• Understanding my leadership approach• Being comfortable with new challenges• Implementing new initiatives

• Sophisticated ways to motivate and influence• Giving supportive feedback and challenging respectfully

Often leaders can be reassured that they are on the right track in their activities, and just need some affirmation so that they can continue to develop. This seminar is the ideal platform for the next stage of your leadership development.

Bogdan Copil: Using game elements in order to motivate students in Key Stages 1-3.

Thursday 09:45 – 11:00

Gamification is the use of game thinking and game mechanics to engage users in solving problems. Gamification techniques strive to leverage people‘s natural desires for competition, achievement, status, self-expression, altruism, and closure. In today’s world, when students are more and more connected to their devices and spend more and more time on games, we can use this for our advantage as teachers – gamify the learning process and see how students will get more and more attracted by your topic!

This session will be an introductory session and a trove of resources that can be used to gamify your classroom.

THIS WAY UP!

Thursday 13:45 – 15:00

For teenagers, moving internationally can be quite traumatic. Even more so when they have to struggle with English to access the learning they need for a successful future. Prague British School prides itself

on being the school ‘where people want to be’ and the EAL department is currently working alongside the rest of the staff to make sure that the school is a positive experience for new arrivals with limited English competency.

This seminar is for anyone involved or interested in the provision of education for these kinds of students and looks at how we can maintain and support progress. We address both classroom issues and how we can set up systems for provision that are flexible and adaptable. We will be using examples of good practice from our work at PBS and sharing good practice and new ideas on how to make sure it is ‘This way UP!’
