PRACTICUM PROGRAM PRIMER
RATIONALE
The Department of Legal Management envisions itself to be at the forefront ofcontributing to legal education in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific region by trainingBedan Legal Management Majors to be holistic professionalsfully human, whollyChristian, and truly Filipinowho are ready to respond to the challenges of a globalbusiness-legal environment.
Guided by the Bedan values of Fides(Faith), Scientia (Knowledge), and Virtus(Virtue), the Department aims to realize its vision by providing Bedan Legal ManagementMajors with a learning environment that espouses the Benedictine core values of ora etlabora (prayer and work), community and the pursuit of peace;and a curriculum thatbridges two professions: a career in business with a strong legal background.
The Program aims to produce competent graduates who are
well-versed in the basic principles and processes governing the Philippinelegal system and the intricacies of law as applied to business;
possessed with practical knowledge of basic management principles; adept in research, problem solving, and analysis; and prepared to face the demands of law school, and ultimately, the challenges
of the legal profession.
To help achieve these objectives, incoming senior students are required toundergo a summer internship/on-the-job training program in an organization of theirchoice, preferably in an accredited organization of the department. As the LegalManagement major is immersed in a simulated work environment, he or she is able toapply the theories of law and business learned in the classroom. The training experiencenot only gives a glimpse of available career optionsit also instills professionalism,commitment to excellence, and uncompromising work ethic.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
The Practicum Program aims to attain the following objectives:
Allow students to have a deeper appreciation of the significance of theirchosen field and to assess their career options;
Work hand-in-hand with companies in developing professional programs
beneficial to Bedan Legal Management majors; Evaluate the intellectual and professional preparedness of Legal Management
majors with the skills expected of them in the industry; Update the curriculum of the Legal Management program with reference to
the changing demands of industry; and Provide the industry with professionally competent Filipino Bedan Legal
Management graduates who are aware of their role in the society and wholly

committed to serve, lead, teach and be witnesses of Christ and the Catholicfaith.
PRACTICUM PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION
I. Persons InvolvedThe following are the persons actively involved in the implementation ofthe Legal Management Practicum Program:
Department Chair Practicum Coordinator Student Coordinator/s Students who will undergo the Practicum Program (Practicum
Students/Interns) Participating Firms/Companies
II. Responsibilities
A. The Department Chair
The Chair has the following responsibilities:
Attend the organization assemblies of the practicum program; Sign all documents pertinent to the practicum program; Recommend students to various firms/companies; Determine projects to be submitted in addition to the documentary
requirements; Coordinate with the practicum and student coordinators regarding the
schedule of the interns, their performance on the job, assessment andevaluation, and other concerns related to the Practicum Program;
Coordinate with the participating firms regarding the internsperformance on the job, assessment and evaluation, and othermatters related to the Practicum Program;
Evaluate and assesses the job performance of practicum students,noting both potential and areas that need improvement; and
Submit the final evaluation and numerical grade of the Interns.
B. The Practicum Coordinator
The practicum coordinator has the following responsibilities:
Act as liaison between the Department of Legal Management and therespective participating companies/institutions;
Prepare practicum work schedules; Specify the necessary requirements expected of practicum students in
terms of completion of research/term papers and attendance inseminars and workshops;

Monitor the implementation of the practicum program with the help ofthe student coordinators;
Ascertain the status/completion of the required work hours inparticipating firm or company;
Regularly consult and update the Chair on important issues andconcerns related to the practicum program;
Discuss important issues and concerns regarding the practicumprogram with practicum students; and
Evaluate and assess the job performance of practicum students,noting both potential and areas that need improvement.
C. The Student Coordinators/Assistant Student Coordinators
Student Coordinators assist the practicum coordinator and have thefollowing responsibilities:
Accept practicum assignments from the practicum coordinator;
Collect the documents indicated in the practicum program checklistand other documents which the participating firm or company mayrequire;
Coordinate with the different participating companies on jobplacements;
Ascertain the status/completion of the required work hours inparticipating firm or company;
Monitor issues and concerns related to the practicum program; and Assist the practicum coordinator in evaluating job performance of
practicum students.
D. Practicum Students/Interns
The practicum students are incoming senior Bedan Legal Managementstudents enrolled in the Legal Management Office Training Workshop(Practicum or LMG12). They have the following responsibilities:
Submit all the necessary documents for practicum placements whichinclude the letter of intent, resume, letter of recommendation signedby the Department Chair, recent colored picture, contract and waiverform, and other requirements of firms participating in the practicumprogram might require;
Secure received copies of all the documents submitted to the
participating company for filing purposes; Give Practicum Primer for Participating Companies to supervisor and
secure Acknowledgment Receipt; Accomplish and sign the Legal Management practicum contract; Conduct themselves professionally and competently while performing
their assigned tasks in the participating firm;

As official representatives of the school, abide by school policies andregulations while in the workplace of their choice and strictly observethe participating firms policies and regulations for student trainees;
Observe professionalism, humility and honesty (values expected of atrue Bedan) while in the workplace;
Satisfy the 200-hour practicum requirement and the completion ofaccumulated 15 hours of seminar attendance as endorsed by theDepartment;
Submit all the required documents and forms as indicated in thepracticum checklist, including a comprehensive profile of theparticipating company or institution (i.e., organizational structure,nature of the business, employee population, years in operation,etc.);
Communicate and report to the Practicum Coordinators and theDepartment Chair when required;
Submit a daily log summarizing the activities and tasks performedwhile in the simulated workplace;
Submit a 300-500 word evaluation outlining (1) the projects in whichthe student assisted or managed; (2) meaningful assignments ortasks; (3) positive and negative aspects of the internship; (4) overallsummary of the experience; and (5) other matters deemed significantto the practicum program; and
Submit required projects, term papers, or book reports as determinedby the Department Chair.
E. Participating Companies and Institutions
The participating firms, companies or institutions willing to provide BedanLegal Management students the opportunity to experience being in asimulated workplace for the first time. They have the followingresponsibilities:
Provide on-the-job training; Accomplish the Legal Management Practicum Contract, specifying the
tasks to be assigned to the intern; Submit a preliminary evaluation concerning job performance, attitude
and work ethic after the intern shall have completed 100 hours of on-the-job training;
Accomplish the Final Evaluation Sheet after the intern shall havecompleted the required 200 hours of on-the-job training;
Discuss important issues or concerns regarding the intern or theprogram with the practicum or student coordinators;
Participate in the continuous evaluation of the Legal ManagementProgram by accomplishing survey forms and questionnaires; and
Coordinate with the practicum coordinator or the Department Chair tohelp improve the Legal Management Practicum Program.

III. Criteria for Practicum Companies and Institutions
For any company to participate in the Practicum Program, the followingcriteria are given:
The participating practicum company or institution must be areputable firm that is able to provide Practicum Students with theneeded training.
It is able to fulfill its responsibilities as a participant to the practicumprogram of the Department of Legal Management.
IV. Mechanics of the Practicum Program
The student must give priority to the accredited institutions of thedepartment when applying. In default thereof, the student mustexecute a waiver, waiving any liability on the part of the school incases such as, but not limited to, sexual harassment, discrimination
and unethical work practices. As per curriculum requirement, each Practicum Student has to
complete 200 hours of on-the-job training. The Practicum Student must have satisfactorily completed the
prerequisite of the Practicum Program (Labor Law or LMG11). In exceptional cases, students who have not taken the pre-requisite
may be allowed to undergo the Practicum Program with the writtenapproval of the Department Chair. Thestudentsgrade in LMG12 shallnot be released until he or she has obtained a passing mark in thepre-requisite subject.
While Practicum assignments are usually undertaken during themonths of April and May, students may be allowed to start their on-the-job training earlier as long as all requirements have beensubmitted.
After completing the first 100 hours, the practicum studentssupervisor will submit a preliminary evaluation concerning jobperformance, attitude and work ethic.
Upon completion of the 200-hour requirement, the practicumstudents supervisor will accomplish the Final Evaluation Sheet.

VIII. Other Policies of the Practicum Program
Before arranging for an internship or practicum, students shouldfamiliarize themselves with the requirements and procedure for securinga position, and prepare all documents to be submitted to the company of
their choice but preferably in an accredited organization of thedepartment.
Ideally students should choose a job related to their course the legalprofession. Arrangements for other positions, may also be made,provided, the same is approved by the Chair.

While the Department Chair provides for the list of accredited institutions,finding and applying for a firm are the students responsibilities.
The intern and the immediate supervisor shall sign the practicum contractprovided by the Department of Legal Management beforethe practicumbegins. The contract describes the students responsibilities during thetraining and the work schedule.
All Practicum Companies must satisfy the necessary criteria to participatein the Practicum Program.
The Practicum Student should not have any relative, whether byconsanguinity or affinity, in his/her chosen company or institution. Astudent who willfully violates this provision shall automaticallybe given a grade of 5 and shall be required to re-enroll thesubject and repeat the entire procedure.
Failure to attend the activities required by the Department (e.g.Orientation Assembly and seminars) will be taken against thepracticumstudentsfinal evaluation.
Failure to submit all the necessary documents will also be takenagainst thepracticum studentsfinal evaluation.
The practicum coordinator and at least three student coordinators shallbe chosen from among practicum student applicants based on theiracademic standing and apparent leadership qualities. They shall only berequired to render 100 hours of on-the-job training; 100 credit hours shallbe given in consideration of their active supervision of the internsassigned to them.
