Finance Practice Market Overview

The past year has seen the continuation of a sense of renewed confidence within the accountancy practice jobs marketplace. As the economy begins to strengthen once more, so firms are looking more proactively at rebuilding and adding experienced personnel to teams that have weathered recent recessionary times. This can be viewed as a time of opportunity for talented candidates with the right skill-set to secure attractive positions and, with it, lucrative packages.

Confidence Returns and Activity Is Up Increased confidence levels within the hiring market are having a knock-on effect across the finance practice sector. Higher volume of overall vacancies, more active candidates and increasing examples of candidate counter offers, mean both employers and employees are being affected by developing activity levels. However the overall number of candidates actively seeking new positions has not increased dramatically over the past twelve months, and there continues to be candidate shortages from the Practice talent pool across all service lines.

New Challenges for EmployersThe increasing dynamics in the sector present tangible staff-related challenges for employers, especially as the jobs market moves back to being more candidate driven. Retaining existing talent as opportunities arise elsewhere, as well as attracting new personnel, are set to become critical issues for many practices going forward. To counter this movement, firms will need to address job flexibility and remuneration strategies in order to hold on to experienced staff and become a company of choice for in-demand talent seeking new positions. With the general growth in demand for key-level candidates, standing out from the crowd will become increasingly important for practices driving a strategy for growth.

Finance Practice Market Overview

A Strong Enough Talent Pool?A candidate shortage is compounding issues as an increased focus on internal audit and compliance staff begins to take hold. Likewise, candidates for tax and accounts positions are being sought, as well as for external audit roles, and a shortage of candidates in these areas is causing pressures. The lack of appropriately skilled and experienced candidates is also reinforced as available talent is attracted to opportunities within industry and commerce, meaning suitably talented personnel is lost from the practice sector. Allied to reduced investment over recent years in graduate and training packages to supply the next generation, there is now a lack of candidates at senior and assistant levels across most practice departments. It is expected that this shortage will continue to have an upward impact in years to come with a predicted shortage of associate directors apparent within the next five years.

Solid FoundationsThe renewed vigour across the sector is translating into many exciting career opportunities within the practice environment. It offers a good, defined career path and can lay solid foundations to facilitate a move sideways into larger companies, for example transferring to a business consultancy role.

Help YourselfAs competition to secure quality candidates, or to acquire an enticing new role hots up, candidates and employers must be mindful of how best to position themselves. Prospective candidates need to ensure they highlight achievement and impact within previous roles and clearly demonstrate to a firm how they can add value. In particular, drawing attention to relevant audit experience within a CV would be a positive move as this remains a key and much sought-after skill.

For employers, attractive and competitive packages and benefits are a pre-requisite. But attention must also focus upon areas such as career progression planning as candidates will be weighing up this factor when they compare organisations. Companies should look to keep in touch with recruiters to remain at the top of the pile when it comes to talent they may come across. Quick decision-making is also a key requirement if attractive candidates are not to be snapped up by offers elsewhere. Finally, as the available talent pool becomes stretched, employers should look closely at development and training support in order to retain staff, as well as being able to mould new staff members who may not have all the desired skills on joining. With the right support they could prove to be a valuable asset in years to come.
