What does the number of dots around the atomic symbol represent??The number of valence electrons

The Rule of
8Atoms tend to gain, lose,
or share electrons until they have eight
valence electrons.

Lewis Dot Structure Structural Formula
Cl
Covalent bonds are formed between non-metals and non-metals
ClHH
Chlorine and Hydrogen will
share their electrons
Note: Hydrogen is content with 2 electrons, not 8.

Bonding Pair- pairs of shared electrons within the molecule
Lone Pair- a pair of electrons in the valence shell of an atom that does not participate in bonding Single bonds occur when a single pair of
electrons are shared between atoms

Practice Drawing Covalent Bonds Using the
transparent cards on the table, show how the electrons can be shared in the following covalent bonds:I2Cl2CO2H2OO2N2
Remember: the electrons MUST be between the symbols. You also can only have 2 on each side…So you may need to turn and twist the pictures until it looks the way it should!
![Page 18: Practice Drawing Lewis Dot Structures at the top margin of page 4](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062310/56816034550346895dcf56a6/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
NO Bell Work: Tuesday 3/27/2012 Interims today! All you need is a
pencil and a scantron. Good luck! When you are done, you may read a science magazine, read a book, or work on homework for other classes.
Don’t forget! Your tissue box is DUE THURSDAY!!
Period 2 – Once you finish, if you have not presented, come up to me so you can present

What is in a name? A chemical formula tells
what elements are in a compound, and the exact number of atoms of each element needed. Ex: NH3, H2O
Covalent bonds and Ionic bonds are named in different ways, but both show the elements and numbers of atoms in their own ways
![Page 21: Practice Drawing Lewis Dot Structures at the top margin of page 4](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062310/56816034550346895dcf56a6/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
