We are looking forward to meeting you in the Azores!
Welcome to the Azores Nine volcanic islands form the Azores Archipelago., located in the North Atlantic,
Ocean. Scattered over 600 km, they were officially registered in the map of Europe
in the 15th century. Since then, the islands have resisted and survived volcanic
eruptions, isolation, invasions of pirates, political wars and infesting diseases. The
inhabitants of the islands are well-known for their bravery, evident during the
whale hunting era in the 20th century, when the men would go to sea in small,
wooden boats.
The island of São Miguel is part of the Eastern Group, together with Santa Maria. It
is home to half of the population of the islands and considered the gateway to the
Azores experience. Some of the available activities in the islands include canoeing in
the craters of extinguished volcanoes, horse riding and cycling across unspoiled
nature, paragliding over beautiful lakes, exploring the Gruta do Carvão (Carvão
Cave), etc.
For further information on Brussels, please visit www.visitazores.com .
Azores quick facts:
• Population in the islands is around 250,000 people.
• The islands are 1,600 km from mainland Europe (Portugal) and 2,454 km from
the North American continent (Canada).
• Some associate the Azores to the Atlantis, the mythical island kingdom
quoted by Plato.
• Spa and bathing site with therapeutic water springs that have been used since
the fifteenth century.
