DIRECTIONS: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

The woman has, in many cultures in Asia, Africa and Europe, brought money, goods and estate to her husband when she got married. The original idea was to ensure that she got a decent treatment from her husband the money was to help him look after her and setup their home. Another justification for the transfer of money was that if the husband were to die or go away, she would be able tosupport herself. In Europe, it was often a method of uniting great families and even kingdoms into powerful alliances which becamewealthier. South Asia continued this tradition even though it had more or less disappeared in the 19 th century. However, the systemwas corrupted when the men and their families began to use it as an excuse to harass the wife making excessive demands on herand her family to bring more wealth. It is now recognized as a social evil because of the enormous strain it places on the womansfamily.

DIRECTIONS: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

This has been suspected all along and often denied, but scientific confirmation is now available. Looks do matter. Good-looking peopleare better off than the others, get priority in workplaces and make more money. A study by researchers at London's GuildhallUniversity shows that men regarded as unattractive earn 15 per cent less than their better-looking colleagues while plain Janes make11 per cent less money than their pretty female work mates. It makes nonsense of the claims made by most people that they go bymerit alone, appearances do not matter and they treat everyone on par. The boss goes out of his way to demonstrate his impartialitybut there is a secret weakness in his heart for the beautiful woman with a soft and demure manner. The study also shows that tall men

earn 10 per cent more than their shorter counterparts. Tall men enjoy an advantage everywhere. Girls always prefer a tall date toa short one, and now it is confirmed that they are richer than short men as well. "Now tall Agrippa lived close by, / So tall he almosttouched the sky ..." Such lines, in addition to real-life experiences, give short men a complex, though some of them are hard nutswho give tall men a tough time in office. Little masters like Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar have given sleepless nights to the talland tough pace bowlers, though in cricket and elsewhere, height is always considered to be a plus factor. The study serves a purposeby exposing the duplicity practised by people while judging others. Parents, while choosing a bride for their son, pretend that it is thebackground and nature of the girl that alone matters, but always tend to prefer the better-looking girl to the one who is perhaps alittle dark or has a short nose. The weakness is, however, human. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee had said, " Sundar mukher joysarbatra " (The pretty face is a winner everywhere). Ideal lovers are always good-looking. Krishna and Radha, Romeo and Juliet,Laila and Majnu simply cannot afford to be otherwise. Could Romeo have waxed so eloquent had Juliet not been beautiful? Did theirphysical charms not reinforce the poignance of t he tragedies of president Kennedy and princess Diana? "Such a one do I remember, whom to look at was to love", wrote Tennyson. The person had to be a looker to have evoked such emotions. However, the factremains that the boss does have a soft corner for the pretty female subordinate, as the study reveals. The pity is he is never goingto admit it.

    21. According to the passage what has been suspected all along, whose confirmation is available now? (Q. code 120527021)
