Citizens of the Year - Mt. Ashland Board and Staff Award description: ‘Some individuals shy away from challenge and others lean in… embracing it as it unfolds. These individuals see opportunity and nurture community partnerships. They are transparent in their decision making and have gained the trust of the community. Their Leadership and vision are resilient. They give back to countless organizations. They contribute to the economy, making a positive impact on the community, providing over 100 jobs each year. They are skilled individuals who have invested a good part of their life to seeing that this community asset is here for future generations. This asset is valuable not only to Ashland but to the entire southern Oregon region. With an Interesting history, they have persevered and oversee one of the few non-profits like theirs in the country. They are true stewards of the land that enable Ashland’s quality of life to thrive. They keep alive an asset that creates a love for a lifetime sport. An asset that positively influences our youth and produces professional athletes who compete and win on state and national levels. They are committed to providing a place where generations of families and friends connect. They have cultivated their own community, full of hearty individuals who love the outdoors and first tracks. They oversee a business that welcomes over 50,000 visitors for year round outdoor and recreational adventures. They share a passion for providing Gemutlickeit – a warm and friendly atmosphere. It is quite fitting tonight, with the theme of embracing a healthy lifestyle, that we honor these individuals who provide a place where the community can take part in activity and healthy habits especially in the winter. A venue where recreation, education and culture meet. Where friendships and marriages begin. When you plant a tree in winter, it’s roots grow strong and it has to survive on its own accord from within. And that is exactly what they have done. Working hard to make the very best of what they are given from mother nature….. all with a smile. It is our pleasure to honor as Citizens of the Year, the Mt. Ashland Board and Staff.’

Festival of Light Celebration- What a Wonderful time of Year! The 2015 Festival of Light Celebration was a wonderful success. From the Parade and Santa’s Grand Illumination to caroling on Saturdays, Small Business Saturday and the new Holiday Open House, the Ashland community enjoyed the holiday spirit in Ashland. 5,000 coupon books to local businesses were handed out to shoppers and residents and visitors alike supported Ashland businesses this year, buying local gift certificates as well.

During the holiday season, the Ashland Chamber emphasizes supporting local businesses when doing your holiday shopping. As we enter 2016, let’s keep that message alive all throughout the year. Small businesses are the life blood of the state of Oregon and our local community. When you have any sort of shopping need this upcoming year, think local businesses first! Visit the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Facebook Page and tell us how you plan to shop local in 2016.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. with the Ashland CommunityAshland’s 27th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday, January 18 at the Historic Ashland Armory in downtown Ashland. The event is free and open to the public, though everyone is encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Ashland Food Bank.

The 2016 theme is “let us be dissatisfied…and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows” from the 1967 “Where Do We Go From Here” speech at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

The 2016 Keynote is UNIVERSES; a national Ensemble Theater Company, of multi-disciplined writers and performers of color, who fuse theater, poetry, dance, jazz, hip hop, politics, down home blues and Spanish boleros to create moving, challenging and entertaining works for the stage. The group breaks the traditional theatrical bounds to create its own brand of theater. Founded in The Bronx, New York in 1995, the members of UNIVERSES came together in the urban poetry and music scene of the late 1990s; quickly moving through the “down town” performance scene to build a home for themselves in American Theatre.

Local dance, theatre and music groups will perform as well, featuring such groups as the Rogue Emsemble and Ashland DanceWorks, just to name a few.

Following the event, the SOU Black Student Union will lead a march to the Plaza where Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech will be played in its entirety.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. This is a family event and all ages are welcome. Seating is limited and available on a first come basis. For overflow attendees, there is a live-streaming simulcast held at the Varsity Theater, 166 E. Main St.

Fredrica Lawrence Fine ClothingContact: Fredrica Lawrence37 E. Main St. Ashland, OR 97520(541) 482-3954www.aclothingboutique.comFredrica Lawrence, better known to her friends, as Fredi, is a native New Yorker and a talented artist. Her interests in the arts and design led her to study architecture at Pratt Institute and fashion at Fashion Institute of Technology. She received her BA in art from Hunter College. In 1972, she moved to the West, to work in costuming at the Oregon Shakespeare Theater in Ashland, Oregon. She fell in love with the incredible beauty of this small but cosmopolitan Southern Oregon town situated in the hills of the of the Rogue Valley. She decided to stay and bring a part of New York with her. Fredi created her own environment by combining the best of the big city and the country and creating Fredrica Lawrence Fine Clothing. The boutique was established in 1973 and its uniqueness has been a favorite of many. The store was initially devoted only to her designs but as it evolved more lines from New York and Los Angeles were included. The playfully sophisticate and comfortably chic clothing definitely shows her love of color, fabrics, textures and quality.

Angel Care Pet GroomingContact: Heather Lawrence(949) 613-2688www.angelcarepetgrooming.comTrusted Mobile Pet Grooming

Pamper your pets and keep them clean and healthy with the help of Angel Care Pet Grooming, a reliable mobile grooming salon. We provide high-quality pet grooming solutions, such as haircuts, blow-drying, and nail clipping, in Ashland, OR and surrounding areas.

We are insured and have received professional groomer training and certification. Trust us to provide a stress-free environment for your four-legged friends as our expert groomers skillfully spruce up their looks.

We are also on Facebook under Angel Care Pet Grooming.

Convenient and Dependable

Seniors and people with disabilities sometimes have challenges getting their furry family member to a brick-and-mortar grooming salon. Hiring a mobile groomer is easier.

Some pets have anxiety and will behave better if they are able to see their house out the window of a mobile grooming salon. Owners can also feel at ease knowing their dearest furry friend is just nearby.

Some pets are aggressive and don’t do well around other dogs. Some cats are afraid to be around dogs in a grooming salon.

Some pet owners are so busy that they just appreciate someone coming to them—one less thing they have to do!

These are just some of the reasons why calling a mobile grooming salon will benefit both you and your pet. Call us today to schedule an appointment. We can attend to your pet’s needs any day of the week.

Ashland Carter Fortmiller HouseContact: Katy Repp514 Siskiyou Blvd. Ashland, OR 97520(541) 708-5412www.ashlandcarterhouse.comStep out onto Siskiyou Blvd to the theatres, shopping, eating and dessert (and some pretty fun bars, too). We’re so well located that ours is the preferred home away from home for visiting directors and actors with the Shakespeare Festival.

The home is on one of Ashland’s fabulous alleys – located behind the main home, you’ll enjoy a peaceful night’s rest and you’ll wake up in the center of it all. We have reserved, lighted, parking spaces for our guests, so no worry about on-street parking. The walk is well-lit in the evening and provides ample opportunity for browsing the whimsical displays in the shop windows along the main street.

The two-story bungalow located at 514 Siskiyou Boulevard in Ashland was built in 1909 from plans drawn by leading Rogue River Valley Architect, Frank Chamberlain Clark. The pedigreed home’s design, setting, materials, workmanship and association with prominent local banker and state legislator E. V. Carter make this home one of Ashland’s finest historic properties.

The large double lot was carefully landscaped. According to local tradition, E. V. Carter invited San Francisco landscape Architect John McLaren to plan his new yard when the latter was in Ashland to design Lithia Park. John McLaren’s other designs include Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and Central Park in New York City.
